The Queenstown Winter Festival has been a huge success this year and is in it's final stages. Some classic events are on today, including the Speights Dog Derby and the Speights Dog Barking competition. Fine weather is upon us for the start of the school holidays! There are plenty of school holiday programmes about. Coronet Peak, Cardrona, Treble Cone and Mt. Ruapehu to name a few. Great early snow for both Islands this season in June. We are expecting an extended period of settled weather but the cold conditions are keeping the snow on the ground in good condition. Over half of the ski areas are open now. Tukino, Broken River, Mount Cheeseman, Round Hill, Ohau and the beginners area at Rainbow should all be opening this Saturday the 1st of July. All remaining areas should be opening next weekend!! AWESOME. Mt Hutt Backcountry heliskiing/boarding products are OPEN. Arrowsmiths (full day) opens this Sunday July 2. For bookings – phone 0800 4 HELISKI (0800 443 547)
A cold front is moving up the South Island today, reaching the Cook Strait around midnight. The front will be followed by a burst of cold southerlies. A faint ridge of high pressure is over the North Island maintaining a southeasterly flow. Over the weekend, a shallow trough of low pressure should lie to the east of the North Island maintaining the cool south to southeast flow. A ridge of high pressure will creep over the South Island, crossing the North Island on the Monday.
NORTH ISLAND Friday starts off with light cloud cover, clearing up during the day. Light southeasterlies throughout. Light snowfall should begin on Friday night and carry through to Saturday evening. During the day, there should be light to moderate cloud cover and light southeasterlies. Sunday should bring clear skies all day with the wind turning to the west in the afternoon.
SOUTH ISLAND Nelson; Kaikoura; Friday should bring fine weather and light southeast-easterly winds. Light snow showers start on Saturday with light cloud cover and light easterly winds. Light snow showers continue on Sunday morning with the wind turning to the west in the afternoon.
