got snow ?              News from The Steep, Deep & Extreme International Big Mountain Slopes

7.30.2005

Whakapapa, New Zealand's largest ski area since joining with Turoa Ski Resort, is part of Tongariro National Park, New Zealand's oldest national park and a world heritage area. Whakapapa is operated under a licence issued by the Department of Conservation and is owned and run by Ruapehu Alpine Lifts Ltd. There are 43 trails with terrain for all ability levels; including off-piste expert terrain. The ski area can be broken into three areas: Happy Valley (a self contained beginners area), the east side (where the majority of lifts and services are located), and the west side (highlighted by the lift accessed backcountry terrain).

ITALY Val Senales (0/20cms) is the only resort currently open for glacier skiing. Typical summer skiing conditions prevail, with the slush setting in early due to the warm temperatures and sunny skies.
NORTH AMERICA Conditions are still good in Timberline (0/26cms) and the beautiful, sunny weather is a bonus.
Whistler is open BUT public not allowed to upload until late morning. The race campers do not share the slopes with the public.

AUSTRALIA The outlook across Australian resorts is not good at present. Continuous rain and drizzle has deteriorated the slopes, especially at lower levels where runs are wet and heavy. Upper slopes are fairing slightly better with a light dusting of new snow above 1700m. Thredbo (95/115cms) is probably offering the best skiing and riding; however, resorts such as Mount Baw Baw (0/10cms) and Ben Lomond (0/1cms) are suffering hugely due to lack of snow and persistent rain. Australian resorts are now in need for colder temperatures and fresh snow in order for the season to really get going

Saas-Fe open, see post earlier this week.Zermatt, always a good time. Hello to Walter at the Victoria Restaurant( great Fondue ), and Grampi's is the popular watering hole. Typical for summer, solid glacier conditions in the am (edging required )break at testa Griga for a beverage to fortify the legs for those POMA pulls.

-I have sent a letter requesting affiliation and /or reposting permission to Snow forcast 7.30.2005.Ideally, this type of format would be ideal for Broad international summaries, yet seperate from "insiders feedback" and the reports and updates individually collected from direct sources....Comments?
