On the Road to Best in the World!
Alpine
World Cup overall champion Bode Miller leads the show this weekend as the alpine World Cup season opens with giant slaloms in Soelden, Austria. Ten U.S. women, including 2005 Worlds GS bronze medalist Julia Mancuso, will compete Saturday while Miller, Daron Rahlves (also a 2005 Worlds GS bronze medalist in GS) lead seven U.S. men Sunday on the Rettenbach Glacier.
Training season wrap – Miller and Rahlves headed into their final preseason tuneups in Europe with fast training runs at the annual speed camp in Chillan and Portillo, Chile. Soft snow at the start of this month in Zermatt created problematic conditions for the women’s speed group for its final preseason overseas camp. Next up: Colorado in early November. Mancuso and Lindsey Kildow pulled double duty, training in Zermatt before joining the tech squad in Pitztal, Austria, for the lead-up to Soelden.
Freestyle
Aerials – World Cup champion (and current leader) “Speedy” Peterson nailed three quint-twisting triples (five twists, three flips) as the aerialists worked through their final water ramp camp at Utah Olympic Park up to Columbus Day. Coach Matt Christensen said seven women clicked on triple-twisting jumps, a “huge” upgrade from previous seasons.
Moguls – Defending World Cup champ Jeremy Bloom spent most of the summer with a personal trainer in LA, looking to boost his ski conditioning and also return himself to football shape since the speedy ex-receiver and kick returner hopes to be drafted by the NFL next spring.
Snowboard
U.S. Snowboarding riders are already racking up World Cup victories and podiums starting with back-to-back halfpipe wins (in the same day!) for Hannah Teter in Valle Nevado, Chile, Sept. 15. In the season-opening snowboardcross Sept. 17, World Championships gold medalists Lindsey Jacobellis and Seth Wescott finished first and second, respectively. In alpine, Adam Smith grabbed third at the indoor parallel slalom in Landgraaf, Netherlands, Oct. 7, and Michelle Gorgone posted a top-10 in the Soelden parallel giant slalom Oct. 15.
Jumping–Nordic Combined
Ski Jumping – The Continental Cup “season” now includes points from summer meets (not to be confused with the Summer Grand Prix) and Clint Jones produced back-to-back podiums in Continental Cup action at Utah Olympic Park, moving into second place overall in the standings.
Nordic Combined – The team split in two for separate training camps in early October with Todd Lodwick and Johnny Spillane heading a four-man group training in Oberstdorf, Germany, and Innsbruck while Bill Demong led three teammates into a mini-camp at Lake Placid.
Disabled
Alpine and Cross Country – High marks for the joint alpine and cross country camp at the Olympic Training Center outside San Diego. A ropes course and a final surf day stressing stamina and team dynamics were highlights, according to cross country skier Mike Crenshaw (LW-4), aiming for his fourth Paralympics.
