CHEVROLET U.S. SNOWBOARD GRAND PRIX REGISTRATION OPENS OCT. 17
PARK CITY, Utah (Oct. 9) - Rider registration for the 2007 Chevrolet U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix tour opens for business on Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006. Mark your calendar, then log on to www.ussnowboarding.com to secure your spot in America's biggest competition series. "The Grand Prix Tour has pushed my riding to a whole new level, because at every event, you're riding with the best halfpipe riders in the world," said veteran Louie Vito, "I started out competing like everyone else - watching and learning. But then I would push myself by watching how the best guys would ride in contests and by feeding off the strong energy of the Grand Prix."
The series kicks off at Breckenridge, CO, Dec. 15-16, before heading East to Mountain Creek, N.J., Feb. 2-4, and concluding at the series' newest venue of Tamarack, ID, Feb. 24-25. NBC and Versus (formerly OLN) will broadcast coverage of the entire series. With the largest overall purse for an American snowboarding series - the 2007 Chevrolet U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix tour boasts prizes totaling $300,000 - along with the best broadcast package for the sport on NBC, America's Olympic network. Rebroadcasts and special presentations of events will be broadcast by OLN (Versus). Plus, in keeping with the tour's tradition, overall winners of the Grand Prix series will be awarded a new Chevrolet truck.
Field sizes will be made up of about 90 men and 40 women in each of the halfpipe contests at all three venues. Only Tamarack will host a SBX event, expected to field about 100 men and 30 women. So register early. "Over the last 10 years the Grand Prix has made every effort to evolve with the sport of snowboarding and to help define the progression and rider pipeline so that the U.S. has a clear path for any person that has the dream to compete at the Olympic level," said Grand Prix Director Eric Webster. "As the sport continues to grow, more riders have the skills to compete at the elite level, therefore the Olympic qualification system will need to accommodate larger competitor numbers. Over the next four years the process of qualifying riders for the Grand Prix and eventually the Olympics will change and evolve, but the philosophy will not - make sure any snowboarder in the U.S. has the opportunity to get to the Olympics regardless of background."
The 2006 series was the hottest on record with Shaun White (Carlsbad, CA) completing the first Grand Prix sweep in the tour's 10-year history en route to an Olympic gold medal run in Italy. Multi-year Grand Prix veterans and former series champions Hannah Teter (Belmont, VT) and Gretchen Bleiler (Aspen, CO) also boosted directly from the Grand Prix to the Olympic podium. "The Grand Prix hosts some of the sweetest contests ever," said Olympic gold medalist Hannah Teter. "You get to compete against the best riders in the world and yet, everyone is just friends. Even though we're gunning for the win, we all cheer for each other. That's what the Grand Prix is all about, having fun and progressing the sport." 2007 Chevrolet U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix schedule:
Dec. 15-16, 2006, Breckenridge Ski Resort: Friday, Dec. 15 - Superpipe Qualifiers Saturday, Dec. 16 - Superpipe Finals and Night Downtown Exhibition
Feb. 2-4, 2007, Mountain Creek Resort: Saturday, Feb. 3 - Superpipe Qualifiers and Night Finals Sunday, Feb. 4 - Slopestyle
Feb. 24-25, 2007, Tamarack: Saturday, Feb. 24 - 22 - Foot Superpipe Qualifiers and Finals Sunday, Feb. 25 - Snowboardcross Time Trials and Heats Constantly pushing the level of riding, the 2007 Grand Prix will host a world-class slopestyle competition at the Mountain Creek stop and the Breckenridge will again build a massive quarterpipe for the floodlit snowmobile tow in exhibition.
