Freestyle Events in Lake Placid Canceled
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (Jan. 12) - Freestyle World Cup events scheduled for Jan. 19-20 in Lake Placid have been canceled because of unseasonable temperatures which prevented adequate snowmaking, the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association and International Ski Federation announced Friday.
Deer Valley Resort in Park City already had taken over an aerials event, which was held Thursday night; the two remaining events in Lake Placid were a moguls and an aerials contest. They will not be rescheduled in the United States, according to Annette Royle, USSA vice president of events.
"The Olympic Regional Development Authority has done everything humanly possible to try to prepare for the World Cups, but it's no secret the cold weather and snow were slow to arrive in the Adirondacks - and throughout the East, so regretfully we have to cancel these events," Royle said. "But there are indications of a weather patterns change and we have every confidence winter will be arriving in the near future, and ORDA will be able to stage the State Farm Snowboard Cup events March 10-11, as scheduled."
"Given the fragile nature of this season's weather, we mutually agreed to cancel the World Cup events," ORDA Director of Events Jim Goff said. "We were up against a short timeline to get the competition hills ready at the jumping complex [aerials] and Whiteface [moguls]. The irony in this situation is it's been snowing here this week, we've been making snow around the clock and our conditions are improving daily. But the window for preparation is just too narrow." NBC will televise coverage Saturday Jan. 20 at 3 p.m. ET and Sunday Jan. 28 at noon ET from the Deer Valley Resort events. Versus (formerly OLN) will provide two hours of coverage Sunday Jan. 21 at 5 p.m. ET and two hours on Sunday Jan. 28, also starting at 5 p.m. ET.
