Silverado surprised us Monday with its winter opening. We can look forward to many more fresh and fun days enjoying her steep terrain, bowls and cliffs that make this area so special.
Squaw Valley has been receiving some small storms over the past couple days leaving us with 6 inches of new snow this morning and more forecast through Saturday. This weekend we have fun activities for the entire family including snow tubing, ice skating, rock climbing walls, the Sky Jump and all the dining and world-class shopping you can handle.

Cortina D'Ampezzo Welcomes The Olympic Torch Relay
On day 48 of the Torino 2006 Olympic Torch Relay, the Olympic flame has reached the town of Cortina d’Ampezzo. Tomorrow, the Olympic flame will continue its journey by travelling to the town of Merano.
From the 18th to the 29th of Jan.06 the Olympia slope will be closed due to the Alpine World Ski Cup. Not to be missed the celebration of the 1956's Olympics from 19th to 26th January.

Torino 2006 set to break Olympic Winter Games broadcast records
The Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games are expected to be the most watched Winter Games in history, according to a pre-Games broadcast report commissioned by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and prepared by Sports Marketing Surveys. Increased free-to-air coverage in Africa and Asia will see the number of countries and territories broadcasting the Games rise from 160 for the 2002 Salt Lake Games to 200 for Torino 2006. Moreover, new media initiatives, including the first-time use of mobile telephony, will offer sports fans greater choice of viewing experience.
The report indicates that 84 per cent of broadcasters (responding to the pre-Games survey) will increase coverage of the Games; two-thirds will increase their live coverage; one third will increase their prime time coverage; and almost one third will be using new innovative broadcast techniques. Hours of coverage:

NBC’s 416 hours of broadcasting in the United States will include the most live coverage across the most platforms of any Olympic Winter Games, including the Salt Lake Games, and include the most high-definition availability of any Olympic Games.

The storm expected to roll in today looks like it's going to hold out until tomorrow. We should see clear skies for most of the day with gusty winds and temperatures in the 20s and 30s. Wind and weather permitting, we are expecting all lifts to operate with the exception of 7, 20 and 26.

With a 12-14 foot base and 144 inches of new snow this month, January has been epic! There are great deals every midweek with rockin' events to go along. We'll be hosting a scavenger hunt on the mountain next Thursday, February 2nd with first prize being a 2006/2007 Mammoth Season Pass. Now that would be EPIC!

Olympiv venues revisited
Sarajevo
In 1984, the Winter Games took place in a Socialist country for the first and only time. The people of Sarajevo gained high marks for their hospitality, and there was no indication of the tragic war that would engulf the city only a few years later. Skier Jure Franko brought joy to the host nation by earning Yugoslavia’s first Winter Olympics medal : a silver in the giant slalom. Marja-Liisa Hämäläinen won all three individual cross-country races for women. In speed skating, Gaétan Boucher and Karin Enke each won two gold medals. Biathlete Eirik Kvalfoss earned a complete set of medals. Twin brothers Phil and Steve Mahre took first and second place in the slalom. The highlight of the figure skating competitions was the free dance performance of Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean. Their interpretation of Ravel’s Bolero earned across-the-board perfect scores for artistic impression.

Val d’Isère
The Laisinant Express : a brand new way to get to the slopes. 33 years after the opening of the Iseran sector, the resort now boasts another brand new access to the slopes from an area which had never been equipped with a lift. A new detachable 6 seater chair lift will be inaugurated in December 2005. Its cost : 4.3 million €. This chairlift will take on some of the central Solaise Express traffic. Skiers staying in the Laisinant area can use this lift to get to the Fornet and Solaise sectors. After having skied the fabulous L or Mattis runs, no need to take the free shuttle to get back to the slopes. Environment is also taken into account. The commune of Val d’Isère has signed an agreement with the National Alpine Botanic Conservator in order to make an inventory of all protected species and to ensure their replanting if necessary. The agreement signed between the STVI and the Vanoise National Park makes provision for the counting of the royal eagles and black grouse nesting within proximity of the lift over the next 7 years.

XI Olympic Winter Games

The 1972 Sapporo Games in Japan were the first to be held outside Europe or the United States. The subject of amateurism stirred controversy when skier Karl Schranz was banned for receiving payment from ski product manufacturers, but full-time ice hockey players from Communist nations were allowed to compete. Galina Kulakova of the USSR won all three cross-country skiing events for women. Ard Schenk of the Netherlands took three golds in speed skating. In Alpine skiing, little-known Marie-Thérès Nadig of Switzerland won both the downhill and the giant slalom. Norway’s Magnar Solberg won the 20km race to become the first repeat winner in an individual biathlon event. Before the Sapporo Games, Japan had never won a gold medal in the Winter Olympics, but in the normal hill ski jumping event, three Japanese jumpers, led by Yukio Kasaya, swept the medals.

Zakopane is a charming town at the foot of Tatra Mountains. Zakopane is situated in southern Poland. It's a city with almost 30 000 inhabitants situated at 800 meters above sea level. The best place for skiing, snowboarding and mountains clibing (what's more cheap). You can buy there some souvenirs from highlanders, including famous cheese "Oscypek". It's a very nice town with its own history and culture . Zakopane
