WORLD'S BEST SKIERS & SNOWBOARDERS COMPETE IN WHISTLER APRIL 14-23 --New Athlete-designed formats at the TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival--
Whistler, BC - April 8, 2006 - The best professional skiers and snowboarders in the world will converge in Whistler April 14-23 to compete in four major competitions at this year's TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival. For the first time in the Festival's history, skiers and snowboarders will compete together in all events, adding an entirely new dimension to the competitions. The athletes are competing for $100,000 in cash and prizes.

Kicking off the first weekend from April 14-16 is the all new 100% athlete-designed Stompede, taking place in a specially-built arena course comprised of massive snow features and a 20 foot Quarter-Pipe at the top of Whistler Mountain. Skiers and riders will compete in a fast-moving session, feeding off each other's energy to take their tricks to the next level. The skiers and riders will be judged and awarded separately. With the course easily accessible from the Whistler Express Gondola and the Roundhouse Lodge, specially discounted foot-passenger tickets can be purchased online at whistler2006.com/stompede.

Moving from daylight to darkness, the nighttime McDonald's Rail Session in Whistler Village on Saturday April 15 is a spectacle not to be missed. Fuelled by the DJs of Team Canada, spotlights, dancers and a capacity crowd, ten top riders will meet ten top skiers for a fast-moving, rail-sliding showdown. Two new rails for 2006 are set to take the competition to the next level.

Sending the Festival into overdrive, the infamous Salomon Superpipe runs from April 17-22, with both the skier and snowboarder SuperFinals taking place on Saturday April 22. With skier Superpipe the hottest new-school discipline, and snowboard pipe an Olympic discipline, the crowd can be assured of incredible athletic action. Perhaps the highlight is the contest after the contest: the SuperHit. Both skiers and snowboarders will take to the pipe to lay down their single best trick. Judged by the riders themselves, this is the event that brings out all the cameras. The grand finale of the TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival is the legendary Big Air, presented by PlayStation. More than 15,000 spectators are expected to watch 10 skiers and 10 snowboarders take to the flight deck only metres away from the concert stage, to the sounds of hip hop heavyweights Blackalicious. As Transworld Media claims, this is "the best big air in the world."

Some of the biggest names will be participating including Canadian Olympians Mercedes Nicoll, Maelle Ricker, Justin Lamoureux, Brad Martin and Crispin Lipscomb. Other athletes invited to compete include Tanner Hall, Jon Olsson, Sarah Burke, TJ Schiller, Peter Olenick, Candide Thovex, Torah Bright, Jan Michaelis and many more. From Traci Max Sachs- Speed Ski Champion
I returned from Sweden successfully leading the overall World Cup. I placed first in Orsa, winning all of the training and qualification runs straight through to the final. I placed 4th in Hundfjallet, after choosing to start at a lower and safer point on the track, due to bad weather conditions and my prior history of crashing there. Before the races in Sweden, I participated in the French Championships/ Marco Salvagio Memorial race. I was very happy with my 2nd place finish behind Italian racer, Elena Banfo. My speed at that race was 202 km/ h. It was nice to meet Marco’s parents and show our support for the loss his family suffered last season. This weekend the fast races in Les Arcs began. I’m so happy with my performance here. I came in first place, beating the young Swedish lady/ Jr. World record holder Sanna Tidstrand, as well as Elena Banfo. This was the Red Rock Cup, which is one of the longest running events in speed ski history. They started having this competition 20 years ago in 1986.

I was focused on doing well in this event as preparation for the upcoming Pro World Championships, which will start on April 15th. I’m really looking forward to the pro race, because I think it may be possible to break my personal speed record this season. I’m also looking forward to the FIS World Cup finals which will be held in Verbier Switzerland starting on April 20th. If all goes well, I hope to retain my overall World Cup Champion title. Be Fast and Be Great!
