Race to the Cup Goes Primetime in Steamboat Howelsen Hill to host night parallel slalom
Steamboat Springs, Colo. (Jan. 4) - The second stop of the U.S. Snowboarding Race to the Cup goes primetime this weekend as the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club hosts a parallel slalom under the lights of Howelson Hill on Friday night.
"This is going to be an awesome weekend," said Head Coach Steve Persons, "Steamboat has been doing a great job preparing for this event and there's a lot of excitement in town, especially for Friday night. This town is super supportive of their winter sports and their athletes and that's always encouraging to our Team."
Friday night's event will feature a festival atmosphere at the base of Howelsen Hill with bands, food vendors and athlete autograph sessions all leading up to the finals slated for 6 p.m. local time.
Look for Steamboat locals Erica Mueller and Justin Reiter to challenge for the podium in both PSL and parallel giant slalom, which will be run on Saturday. But it's never safe to count out Olympians Tyler Jewell (Sudbury, MA), who won the opening PGS event at Copper Mountain, or 2002 Olympic bronze medalist Chris Klug (Aspen, CO), who was third in the same race.
"We've come off a tough trip to Europe with some major weather problems and it was really hard to find places to train, so it's great to be able to relax and know that our riders have excellent conditions to train and race on, especially as we prepare for the World Championships later this month," added Persons.
As a critical component to the U.S. Snowboarding pipeline and entry into the World Cup level, the Steamboat stop, part of the $9000 series, will also serve as the final opportunity for riders to qualify for the World Championships, set for Jan. 14-20 in Arosa, Switzerland. The U.S. Team will be named following the event in Steamboat.
"This race is going to bring everyone together," said Persons, "there's a number of riders who haven't qualified for the World Championships yet, so guys like Adam Smith (Bend, OR) and Vic Wild (White Salmon, WA) will be gunning. So will Lindsey Lloyd (Centerville, UT), she's been riding World Cup with us early on this year, but she still has to nail her spot. It's going to be fun."
Remaining U.S. Snowboarding Race to the Cup Events:
Jan. 5-6 - Steamboat Springs, CO
March 10-11 - Bromley, VT
