MT. BACHELOR, Ore. (Feb. 7) - With the energy of the Chevrolet U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix still charging at Mt. Bachelor, the Chevrolet Revolution Tour rolls into the Northern Cascades Feb. 9-11 as halfpipe, slopestyle and snowboardcross are contested on the same features the pros competed on last weekend during the Grand Prix.
The quickest way to make the jump to the pro-level series of the Grand Prix, the Revolution Tour provides young riders an opportunity to compete on the best venues in the country as they look to progress their riding to the next level. The tour's first stop at Copper Mountain, CO, saw a full field of riders already pushing well past the level of the 2006 season. "We're looking at full fields once again with over 300 male and female riders registered, "said U.S. Snowboarding Manager Abbi Nyberg, who directs the tour. "Coming off the Grand Prix, the pipe and slope are in great condition. Pat Malendoski (Grand Prix pipe shaper and 2002 Olympic pipe master) is cutting the pipe for this event, so it should be in great shape. Bachelor has always been a great supporter of the sport and we are thrilled to be back there again."
In addition, the 2007 Chevrolet Revolution Tour has partnered with Ticket To Ride World Snowboard Tour (TTR), the largest culmination of independent Freestyle events across the globe. As a two star event, winners of the Revolution Tour stops will receive 400 points towards winning the overall TTR world title.
Also at stake is a chance to impress U.S. Snowboarding coaches with the top riders from the Revolution Tour receiving an invitation U.S. Snowboarding Project Gold, a ticket to ride with U.S. Snowboarding at their annual summer camp. Plus, top riders will have a shot at earning start spots at the 2008 Chevrolet U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix, the Junior World Championships team, US Open and the State Farm U.S. Snowboarding Cup, a World Cup competition set for March 10-11 in Lake Placid, NY. The Mt. Bachelor stop kicks off Friday, Feb. 9 with SBX, followed by halfpipe on Saturday and wraps up Sunday with slopestyle. When the tour wraps up June 21-22 at Mt. Hood, $10,000 in cash will have been awarded.

FIS NEWS

Åre 2007 gets underway ... more Full schedule at FIS World Cups ... more FIS Speed Skiing World Championships 2007 at Verbier (SUI) ... more Some more calendar changes ... more Savage forest fires threatened ski resorts in Australia ... more Strong Team Norway in early Telemark World Cups ... more Swedes rule FIS Marathon Cup ..
The 39th FIS Alpine World Ski Championships finally got underway in Åre (SWE) on Tuesday, 6th February, after three days of wind and heavy snowfall causing postponement of the opening weekend´s races. In a beautiful, bright sunshine and under blue skies, both the men’s and ladies’ super-G races were held in excellent conditions. In the men’s event, 26-year-old Patrick Staudacher stunned the field by becoming the first Italian World Champion in the speed events in 55 years. He is also the first Italian to win since Alberto Tomba in 1996. Staudacher was joined on the podium by veteran big-time performers Fritz Strobl of Austria and Bruno Kernen of Switzerland. Both of them only made their respective super-G national teams following internal qualifications. Aged 34 and 6 months, and 34 and 4 months, Kernen and Strobl, respectively, also became the oldest medallists at FIS Alpine World Ski Championships throughout history. Between the bronze and tenth place, there were seven men within only 7 hundreds of a second!
The 2007 FIS Speed Skiing World Championships have been confirmed and will be staged in Verbier (SUI) under the auspices of Swiss-Ski. The teams will arrive on April 15th and, following official training, begin the racing runs on 17th April. The Finals are scheduled for Thursday, 19th April, 2007, followed by a “Speed Exhibition,” demonstrating such sports as speed flying, speed biking and ski-bob. The Organizing Committee together with TéléVerbier is looking forward to hosting one of the best and most exciting Speed Skiing World Championships ever seen.

Mt.Hotham and Thredbo - have been under threat from extremely strong forest fires that have been raging during the Southern summer so far. Mt. Buller in Victoria faced the strongest threat of all, with the fires burning ski runs and coming within meters of the village itself. Luckily the firefighters were able to defend all property, including the Freestyle FIS World Cup aerials site and the judges’ stand, on the mountain. Each resort has been using water from their snow making machines to save the resorts, especially the infrastructure. Altogether over 5000 people have been fighting the fires. The threat has gone away for the moment though it could resurface should the drought continue and there not be enough rain.

FIS Marathon Cup has been dominated by Swedes who, with double victories by Elin Ek and Daniel Tynell at last weekend's Koenig-Ludwig-Lauf in Oberammergau (GER), lead both the men's and ladies’ overall classifications. With Elin Ek as the new leader and Jenny Hansson in 2nd, the Swedes occupy the ladies’ top two spots at the half-way point. And after three stages, there have been only Swedish victors on the men's side as Jerry Ahrlin, the winner of the first two stages, wears the red leader's jersey. Unfortunately, due to weather conditions, the next stage of the FIS Marathon Cup, the 76km La Transjurassienne in France, has had to be cancelled. This gives the competitors an additional week of recuperation before the next stage in Estonia: Over 3,000 competitors from 23 nations will take part in 63km-long Tartu Marathon on 18th February.

Innsbruck & the Stubai Glacier

Innsbruck - The Winter Sports Capital, twice host to the Winter Olympics offers Old World history combined with some of the best ski mountains in the world capital. The city works hard to maintain and improve its twin character as a top-class ski area and sophisticated urban center. Innsbruck, with its striking location at the foot of the Alps, offers winter guests a tempting choice of great skiing and snowboarding in six different areas.

As the ultimate winter Olympic venue, Innsbruck has hosted the world famous event twice based on an excellent variety of terrain and an impeccable infrastructure for skiers and non-skiers. The nearby village of Igls boasts the legendary men's Olympic downhill run, and stunning views of a picturesque Innsbruck below.
Free shuttle bus service links the various ski areas, and the "Super Ski Pass" is the skier's key to 310 miles (500 kilometers) of ski-able terrain and 200 lifts. The pass also covers the Stubai glacier, and even gives holders the option of excursions to St. Anton and Arlberg and Kitzbuhel.
Innsbruck is a living treasure house of history. Once an imperial capital, it embraces 800-year-old traditions adding to the authentic charm and elegance of the place. The city also has world class shopping, fine restaurants, and many sights from the historic "Golden Roof" to the fascinating Alpine Zoo.
For all people longing for the genuine winter sports fun, the Stubai Glacier is the optimum oppurtunity! On more than 50 kilometres of ski runs they may take their chance not only on intensive downhill skiing, carving and boarding, but cross-country skiing can be practised wonderfully on the alpine trail of a length of 4,5 km. 21 installations, among 4 cabin lifts, 6 chair lifts, 9 ski tows and training lifts and 2 magic carpets offer ski fans a trendous winter sports resort, and active athletes from all over the world a maximum skiing pleasure at 1.750 to 3.200 m above the sea level.

The new six person chairlift Fernau links the Fernau to the Gaißkarferner mountain. Snowboard freaks can find ideal conditions at the newly created "Boarder´s paradise" including Quarterpipes, Spins, Table Tops, Pro Jumps and a - 100 metres long - halfpipe . For carving fans there is a special run at Daunferner, regulated by a stoplight, where the feeling for bends can be experienced intensively. Two giant slalom runs and a high-speed run at Eisjochferner complete the offer for winter sports fans.

The adventurous and daring can be close to the "eternal ice" on the climber´s steps of the ice tower at Gamsgarten station, since this is an ideal training area for fans of climbing on ice. Every wednesday an introductory course climbing course takes place.
The Stubai Glacier funiculars pay a big deal of attention to the variety offered to the vacationer: starting at a professional gastronomic service, for example in the restaurant "zur Goldenen Gams" (the golden chamois), including dressing rooms and showers to sport shops with rental and storage options.

Seven Applicant Cities have entered the race to win the right to host the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games: Sochi, Russia; Salzburg, Austria; Jaca, Spain; Almaty, Kazahstan; PyeongChang, South Korea; Sofia, Bulgaria and Borjomi, Georgia.
After Fedor Radmann stepped down from his position as CEO of Salzburg 2014 due to health reasons on Monday, 22 January 2007, Franz Klammer, the 1976 Olympic Downhill Champion and skiing legend, who was already serving as the leading Athlete Ambassador of Salzburg 2014, accepted the new role of Chairman International. After today’s executive meeting which was held in agreement with Heinz Schaden, the mayor of the City of Salzburg and Chairman of the Advisory Board of Salzburg 2014 and the Austrian Olympic Committee (ÖOC), the new role for Klammer will see him representing Salzburg 2014 at the international level.
