Snow Alert - Toranto Canada, Hemsedal, Norway,

***
Mammoth Mountain
Most weather models are showing the upcoming storms looking bigger and badder than before. Conditions are currently calm at Mammoth Mountain, but things will be changing soon.

At 6am it is 30 degrees at Main Lodge and winds are moderate. Winds will get stronger today with snowfall possible around 4pm. Highs are in the low 30's with cloudy skies. The winds are already at 60mph up top with temperatures in the teens.

There is a Blizzard Warning in effect from 4am Friday to 10am Saturday. Traveling during this timeframe could potentially be dangerous with heavy snowfall, strong winds and low visibility. Please be safe out there and avoid driving if possible.

All lifts are expected to run today, except for Chair 26. However, be prepared for lifts to be placed on weather hold as the winds pick up. The crew has rolled out over 800 acres of groomed snow on 84 trails. Come get some runs in before you bundle up for the storm tomorrow.

Please remember that natural and man-made obstacles do exist so always ride with caution.

Jackson Hole
It's sunny yet COLD at the base, but just a little ride up the gondola and it's downright balmy. A simple solution to this dilemma? Spend your time above 8,000. That's what I did yesterday and it was fantastic! Despite knowing that I'd be peeling off layers up top, I couldn't help but bundle up to wait for the gondola to get rolling. Ten minutes later, I'm stripping down to minimal layers and basking in the sunshine and temperatures in the upper 20s. The snow stayed at that perfect not-too-hard, not-too soft consistency and I had a great time flying down groomers like Amphitheater, Grand and Rendezvous Trail

EXTREME caution should be taken by anyone planning to go into the back country over the next week. Travel in the backcountry is ill advised as all slopes are being rapidly loaded with large amounts of snow, that is over riding the December 29th rain crust that can be found below tree line. Expect large scale loose and slab avalanches occurring in the upper surface layers. There will be definite instabilities in the new snow and possible slabs from the rain crust / new snow interface. High winds from the North West in the Alpine have produced enormous cornices on lee slopes as well as rapidly loaded South and East facing gullies. Be especially cautious if moving from scoured ridges into gullies and around stressed convex terrain. In addition to being VERY DANGEROUS in the backcountry at present, slogging up through 2 metres plus(+) of deep powder makes for a bit of a mission as well. Not a week for hiking in the backcountry

4 backcountry travelers dead after being hit in their tent by a large snow Avalanche in the Hakuba area.

Killington
December was a great snow month here at Killington with 92.5 inches, just shy of the 96-inch December record set in 2003. The New Year is off to a great start with 10 inches of new snow already. As of today, we have received 117 inches for the season and we’re skiing on some fantastic conditions and deep base depths. Our World Class fleet of 21 snowcats (including three winch cats for grooming some of the steepest terrain in New England!) has plenty of snow to work with and groom into more than 40 miles of soft corduroy on a nightly basis.

Snowmaking continues to complement Mother Nature’s offering and if you have been holding off making turns, well, January is here and now is the time for you to head to the mountains of Central Vermont and experience a winter getaway at Killington.

BOMBARDIER
Bombardier Extends Support for Canadian Ski Racers Through 2011 Title sponsorship of Lake Louise World Cup races part of a new three-year agreement with Alpine Canada Alpin

The three-year Summit Level partnership renewal includes title sponsorship of the Lake Louise Winterstart World Cup Men’s and Ladies alpine ski races through 2011. Traditionally held in late November and early December, the races held at the Lake Louise Mountain Resort in the Canadian Rockies are the season-starting speed events on the Men’s and Ladies FIS World Cup tour and one of alpine racing’s marquee stops every year.

“We are very happy to confirm our support to Alpine Canada Alpin and to the Canadian Alpine Ski Teams for another three years, including our participation as title sponsor to the Bombardier Winterstart Lake Louise World Cup competition. The performances and the dedication of all members of the Ski Teams are a true example of the Canadian Spirit that defines Bombardier, and we will proudly continue to support their quest to win against the best in the world,” said John Paul Macdonald, Bombardier Senior Vice President, Public Affairs.

Lake Louise is the first North American resort ever to be named to the prestigious Club 5+, the organization that brings together the most famous and historic World Cup alpine racing courses in the world.

“The support of Bombardier is critical to our goal of making Canada a world leading alpine racing country by 2010,” said Ken Read, Chief Executive Officer, Alpine Canada Alpin. “From staging races which allow our athletes to compete at home in Canada to helping provide the human, financial and technical resources we need to be the best in the world, Bombardier with this new partnership moves us closer to success.”

Bombardier signed its first two-year agreement with ACA in 2006. With national team racers coming off a record season, Jan Hudec (Calgary, Atla.) made history two weekends ago by becoming the first Canadian to win a downhill race at Lake Louise, where World Cup events have been staged since 1980. Britt Janyk (Whistler, B.C.) followed that up by finishing in third place in the Ladies Downhill last weekend.

As part of the agreement four athletes are also representing Bombardier on their helmets: Jeffrey Frisch (Mont-Tremblant, Que.), Shona Rubens (Canmore, Atla.), Sherry Lawrence (Calgary, Atla.) and, for the first time in Canadian history a para-alpine athlete is receiving headgear sponsorship, Lauren Woolstencroft (Vancouver, B.C.).

Timberline Lodge - Mt Hood - Oregon
The new Jeff Flood Express lift is giving our guests a great new experience in Still Creek Basin - with 9 new trails on over 220 acres of newly opened terrain
open

Timberline is proud to host the Christine Cato Memorial Ski Race this month on Saturday, January 5th. This invitational race is likely the largest highschool ski race in the nation. It is in honor of Christine Cato who was a member of the Beaverton High School Ski Team when she died in an accident here on the mountain in the summer of 1989, just before her senior year. She loved the slopes and she was a great friend who encouraged her peers to enjoy themselves, follow their dreams, and excel in their pursuits. This race means a lot to us and to the many young athletes who participate each year as they get another competitive race season underway.

Your REI, AAA or Life Balance membership will net you a $5 discount on Timberline lift tickets this winter. Just show your membership card at the Ticket Office or Guest Services Desk in the Wy'East Day Lodge. Also, Timberline has a super 2-for-1 deal with Shell Service Stations. With the purchase of a full tank of gas at participating locations, customers will receive a Shell voucher for a free lift ticket with the purchase of another fully priced adult ticket. This 2-for-1 deal is good on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays this winter at Timberline!
