KIRKWOOD OPENS UP NEW TERRITORY

This winter season, advanced skiers and riders can participate in guided hikes to the Thunder Bowl area, adjacent to Kirkwood's permit boundary off the backside of the ridgeline behind Chair 6. The untapped terrain offers experienced skiers and riders a taste of the backcountry. Advanced skiers and riders can also take a Level I, II, or III Avalanche Certification Course to learn various aspects of snow science and snow safety, including skills such as slope evaluation, how to determine snow density and advanced rescue techniques. The popular Backcountry Awareness Courses, an introductory lesson into safety in unpatrolled terrain, will be offered twice monthly. Seasoned Kirkwood ski patrollers and certified guides lead all programs, which include necessary backcountry specific equipment, including avalanche beacon, probe and shovel.

Skiers and riders who crave it steep and fast will be ecstatic with Kirkwood's expanded High Angle Grooming program. Already the leader of groomed black and double black diamond runs on Tahoe's South Shore, Kirkwood will increase its regularly groomed high angle terrain to include runs that were previously only groomed sporadically during the season.

Tours are available on weekends and holidays, 9AM or Noon, weather permitting. Pro patrollers will accompany group on four runs of fresh turns; strong intermediate to expert skill level needed. Limited to five people per tour, the cost is $100/person for four runs. Groups of five can reserve any day, seven days a week. Tours fill up quickly, so guests are encouraged to book far in advance.
