Olympic Venues revisited

VIII Olympic Winter Games

The 1960 Squaw Valley Games were preceded by a controversy when the organizing committee refused to build a bobsleigh run because only nine nations had indicated an intention to take part. This was the only time that bobsledding was not included in the Olympic program. As the Games were held in California, it seemed fitting that the chairman of the Pageantry Committee in charge of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies was none other than Walt Disney. A new sport, biathlon (a combination of cross-country skiing and shooting) was added to the Olympic program. The first race was won by Klas Lestander of Sweden. Women competed in speed skating for the first time. Male speed skater Yevgeny Grishin gained victories in the 500m and the 1,500m, just as he had in 1956.
-The United States ice hockey team won an unexpected championship, upsetting both Canada and the USSR. -The first Miracle on Ice.
-The first winter Olympics televised
-When Alexander Cushing put forward Squaw Valley's bid to the International Olympic Committee in 1955, the resort did not even exist ! He was the only inhabitant and homeowner in the whole place (300km from San Francisco and 1,900m above sea level).
-The winner of the downhill, Frenchman Jean Vuarnet, wore metal skis instead of the traditional wooden ones. It was the first Olympic medal to be won on metal skis.

Awesome Winter Conditions!
The New Year has started off strong bringing us 38-48" of new snow this past week. Currently we are enjoying a great base and beautiful blue skies. The upper and lower mountain has great winter conditions for all abilities and the Mountain is looking the best it has all season. This is why we ski and ride, why we enjoy the mountains and why we keep coming back. We look forward to seeing you here!
KIDS SKI & RIDE FOR ONLY $5 EVERY DAY! Squaw Valley is a kids paradise and Squaw has got one of the world's best kid's prices - Ages 12 & Under ski for only $5 EVERY DAY! That's a family value you can bank on and family time on the snow is good for all! The SquawKids Children's Center offers fun and on-snow programs for ages 3-12. SquawKids Details.

Mammoth Mountain
What a way to kick off the New Year! Thanks to one of the most incredible storms we've ever seen, Mammoth now has a 10-12 foot base. That's the deepest base in the US. We're stoked, as this means we'll have excellent conditions in January and hopefully another long season.

There's tons of soft snow everywhere on the mountain but my favorites so far are the Face of Chair 5 and Dry Creek. The Top and Chairs 13 and 14 opened up yesterday and will be open again today - so pack up your powder gear and head to Mammoth!

At Main Lodge this morning we have mostly clear skies with few clouds, calm winds and a temperature of 31 degrees. We are expecting to operate all lifts today except for Chair 20 and Chair 26.
