International Olympic ComitteeC
Busy start of the year at the IOC Setting the tone for 2006, January will be a busy month at the IOC. On 24 January, IOC President Jacques Rogge will meet with Secretary General of the United Nations Kofi Annan who will visit the IOC Headquarters for the first time. On the agenda, the Olympic Truce, which has enjoyed Mr Annan’s unwavering support over the last four Olympic Games, and the review of shared activities carried out with the various United Nations agencies. President Rogge and Mr Annan will meet again in Davos (Switzerland) the next day. They are expected to take part, together with FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter, in an Opening Media Lunch on the theme of ‘The impact of sport in the world’. At the initiative of the World Economic Forum, sport will have a privileged place within the discussions in Davos this year. President Rogge is expected to attend various sessions on 25 and 26 January. With the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games only weeks away, the indications are that, thanks to more comprehensive broadcast coverage than ever before by the IOC’s rights-holding broadcast partners, the Games will be enjoyed by a record number of viewers worldwide. Moreover, with 80 or more National Olympic Committees expected to send athletes to compete in the 84 events (compared to 76 NOCs in Salt Lake City), the widening geographical appeal of the Olympic Winter Games is clear. The latest IOC visits and test events have confirmed Torino 2006’s state of readiness, and the preparations have also been praised by the European Union for the efforts made to respect the natural environment.
