New Zeland Snow
The white stuff has been falling creating some wicked conditions throughout if you can dodge the weather.
For all you heading up the mountains please take care. With large amounts of new snow around, avalanches are not uncommon. There has already been one such incident this week, so think ahead, be prepared and be cautious. To find out more about avalanches and risks click here.
The Burton Open was a great success. The competition stepped it up and showed us what they were made of. Although the weather didn't cooperate, the week produced some magnificent action. Many of the kiwi riders showing that they can definately 'bring it' on the world stage.
Speedflying is a new winter flying sport creating a link between skiing and gliding through the air! It’s an exhilarating sport, which fascinates both participants and spectators. The sport appeals to experienced skiers who enjoy off-piste skiing, exploring runs formerly un-suitable for skiing, as well as paragliding pilots and parachutists.

Alyeska Resort
GIRDWOOD, AK – August announcement, 2007 partnering with the Municipality of Anchorage Public Transportation Office “Glacier Valley Stagecoach” in Girdwood was awarded $223,838 this week by the Federal Transit Administration to pay for the initial start-up and operating expenses of a new local transportation service which will include two 15 passenger vehicles.
“This project would not have happened without the tremendous support we received from Mayor Mark Begich, Mary Jane Michael, and the staff of the Mayor’s office”, said Alyeska Resort owner John Byrne. Alyeska Resort and the Girdwood business community are also contributing $60,000 towards first year operating expenses. “We appreciate the leadership displayed by community members Bob Persons of the Double Musky and Spike Farley of Chair 5 in organizing the local support and funding for Glacier Valley Stagecoach,” Byrne says.
“This pioneering public private partnership bringing together Alyeska Resort, along with other privately owned business interests and the MOA to build a transportation solution for the Girdwood community is truly a landmark collaboration. This model of promoting and creating public private sector partnerships could potentially be expanded to help in the handling of other local issues such as providing additional funding and support for The Little Bears Playhouse and the potential for developing a sustainable long term recycling plan in Girdwood.”
Alyeska Resort’s, Girdwood Transportation L.L.C. will manage the day-to-day operations of Glacier Valley Stagecoach for at least the first year, led by Di Hiibner, Mountain Services Manager, and Shelley Elliott, Planning and Permitting Coordinator. “I have the world of confidence in Di and Shelley and their ability to provide a high level of service to locals and visitors alike”, said Mr. Byrne
Glacier Valley Stagecoach is planning to commence year round operations this fall. The proposed one hour loop will service 19 Girdwood area locations including multiple in Town locations and The Alyeska Resort. During peak times both vehicles will follow the same route, approximately 30 minutes apart, in order to increase reliability and minimize wait times.
