Nakiska - Canada
Calgary’s Closest Mountain, is set to start its public ski season on Saturday, December 8th. The mountain has been busy for the past month with international ski teams making Nakiska their home for pre-season training.

On Saturday, the following areas will be open:
Gold Chair: Including Red Crow, Whoop Up, Upper Little Hunter, NEW Mapmaker, Last Pitch Mapmaker, Mid-Mountain Area, Oly Easy Way, Gold Road, Lower Eagle Tail, Gold Rush, Whiskey Gap.
Silver Chair: Grand Trunk, Lower Homesteader, Homesteader Easy Way, Base Area, Lower Eyeopener.

Lifts in Operation: Gold, Silver, Olympic, Bronze, Small Magic Carpet.

Full day lift pricing for opening weekend will be as follows: $44 – Adult; $36 – Senior; $32 – Youth; $18 – Child. Nakiska’s rental shop, snow school, mid-mountain lodge, base-area lodge, Slopeside Coffee, daycare and retail shop will all be in operation.

$29 Discover Skiing Program: Nakiska is calling all beginner skiers and snowboarders to come and sample the sport with the $29 Learn to Ski Days, taking place on December 8th, 9th, 15th, 16th, 22nd and 23rd. First timers can enjoy a beginner group lesson, rentals and beginner area lift ticket for just $29. For ages 13 and up. Space is limited, so please register in advance by calling Nakiska at 232-8477.
There have been a number of significant improvements to Nakiska for this season: Run Widening: Extensive ground work has widened Red Crow and Whoop Up, and a new speed training track has been installed on Map Maker, which has been widened to 60 metres, and is now fully covered by state-of-the-art snowmaking. The new snow coverage will provide great intermediate skiing off the Gold Chair throughout the entire season. New Magic Carpet and Learning Area: Nakiska has re-developed and expanded its beginner area, including the installation of a new 350-foot magic carpet.

Silver Star Mountain Resort
The 2007 Nordic Festival hosted by Silver Star Mountain Resort and the Sovereign Lake Nordic Club was an outstanding success! The Festival began on November 24 with equipment demos from Atomic, Salomon, Rossignol, Fischer, Madshus, Alpina, Peltonen, Toko, Exel, START and SWIX.

The demo days were well attended at both venues. At the annual Saturday night fundraising banquet for the National Team and the Silver Star Nordic Club, over $12,000 was raised in Norm Crerar's famous auction. On Wednesday, the Swix Wax clinic in the NATC was standing room only with 40 plus people in the wax room. Next day, the Swix Ladies Day was full to capacity for a day of technique tips courtesy of three-time Olympian Milaine Theriault and other ladies from the X-C.com racing team. On Friday, the big event was the Ski Expo in the NATC auditorium; with a full house in attendance to meet members of Cross Country Canada's National Team. The weekend wound up with the season's first Nor-Am event at Sovereign Lake, where over 280 racers were in attendance.
Silver Star Nordic manager Glenn Bond reports that "Many people complimented us on this year's line up of events and evening activities." Early season snow - a Silver Star specialty - allowed for over 80 kilometres of trails to be opened and groomed at both Silver Star and Sovereign Lakes Nordic Club.

Travel Zoo
American, United and other airlines have cut prices on winter travel. Flights to and from cities around the country have been deeply discounted.

The catch is that you have to travel on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday for the lowest fares -- If you can, now is the time to snatch up a great deal. These sales allow travel all the way through mid-March.

We recommend using SuperSearch, so you can easily compare both the big online travel agents as well as the airline sites directly. No single site always has the best fares:
