The United States Olympic Committee and the U.S. Ski Team will host a teleconference Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 2 p.m. ET (12 p.m. MT) with Olympic giant slalom gold medalist Julia Mancuso (Olympic Valley, CA), multiple World Cup downhill winner Lindsey Kildow (Vail, CO) and Resi Stiegler (Jackson Hole, WY) to discuss the upcoming Alpine World Championships in Are, Sweden (Feb. 3-18).
The women’s team will be in Sestriere, Italy at the time preparing for World Cup speed races prior to traveling up to Sweden for World Championships that are held every other year.
Kildow, a two-time Olympian who won the 2006 Olympic Spirit award last February, has seven top-3 results including two downhill wins this season and is currently third in the World Cup downhill standings.
Mancuso, who skied in her first Olympic Winter Games at 17 in 2002, has finished in the top 3 in five consecutive World Cup races (a first for U.S. women), including three victories; a super G Friday, Jan. 19 (Cortina, ITA), a super combined Sunday, Jan. 14 (Altenmarkt,-Zauchensee, AUT) and a downhill (Dec. 19 in Val d’Isere, FRA). She also won two bronze medals at the 2005 World Championships.
Stiegler, a 2006 Olympian and the daughter of Olympic champion Pepi Stiegler (1964 slalom gold medalist in the race where Billy Kidd was silver medalist and Jimmie Heuga was bronze medalist), is in her fifth season on the World Cup tour and was fourth last Sunday (Jan. 14) in the "super combi," narrowly missing an American sweep of the podium as Mancuso won and Kildow was runner-up.

Italy (Jan. 21) - Olympic giant slalom champion Julia Mancuso (Olympic Valley, CA) made it an historic five consecutive World Cup podiums - and three in 50 hours, finishing second Sunday in a foggy World Cup GS while teenager Megan McJames (Park City, UT) landed her first points in 28th place.
WCSN.com will broadcast same-day video streaming at 2 p.m. ET Karen Putzer of Italy won her eighth World Cup, but her first in four seasons, with a two-run time of 2:46.93. Mancuso finished in 2:47.34. It's the hottest streak by an American woman since March 1983 when Tamara McKinney, who holds the U.S. women's mark of 18 World Cup wins, had four podiums - including three wins - in five days. No other U.S. woman has been on the podium in five consecutive races.
McJames, the 2006 NorAm giant slalom champion who is racing this winter in her first World Cups, qualified out of the 41st start spot after losing a ski pole at the bottom of her first run; she finished with a total time of 2:52.76.

The first run saw nine women from beyond No. 40 start break into the top 30 and 11 women, a high number for GS, fail to finish. Jessica Kelley (Starksboro, VT) wound up 31st, one-hundredth of a second away from reaching second run when the "attack from the back" unrolled.
Coach: Mancuso "unbelievable"
"What Julia's doing right now is unbelievable," said Head Coach Patrick Riml. "The last two weekends she's had five podiums, won two races...in four different events [third in DH and first in super combined in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Austria, then first in super G, second in downhill and GS in Cortina]. It's impressive; she's having fun right now and skiing unbelievably well, no matter what event. And she was the only one out of the top 10 today who skied in all three races in Cortina...plus the training run. That's a lot of skiing, and Julia's not only doing it, she's doing it at such a high level."
"My skiing's just feeling really comfortable," Mancuso explained. "It was tough in the first run because I hadn't trained GS so much, and of course, it was really foggy.
"But the snow was just awesome and the fog probably helped keep the snow cold. You always see only two gates. It wasn't that cold [0 C. for the first run, +4 C. for the second], at least it didn't feel that much colder...but conditions were perfect, a good race for girls at the back to get in there."
The GS was held on the same section of Cortina's Olympia delle Tofane course as the super G Friday (which Mancuso won) and the downhill Saturday (where she was second). "It was the same hill, but conditions were way better, the best conditions all week," she said. "In the fog, people got confused; there are some rolls and some spots, and people didn't handle it very well. ...Definitely, the visibility was a problem, but I think if you're skiing well, it didn't matter. The snow was so smooth...
"It was definitely a day to take advantage of skiing well - any [start] position was good because you could ski in there" to qualify for the final run.
The women race next weekend in San Sicario, the 2006 Olympic speed run, with two super Gs (one picked up from Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Austria, last weekend] and a downhill.

In a race shifted from Chamonix because of a lack of snow, Macartney's time was 1:57.54 with Sullivan one-hundredth of a second behind his teammate on the 3.15K Oreiller Killy speed run. Pierre-Emmanuel Dalcin of France won with a time of 1:56.37. Canadians Erik Guay and Manuel Osborne-Paradis completed the podium.
"Nice day for France and Canada, but tough day, some bad luck for our guys," said Head Coach Phil McNichol. "I'm surprised they pulled it off with such good conditions. Nice, sunny day and right around zero [Celsius, 32 F.] after soggy, rainy day yesterday and no second training run...but they did a good job.
"Bode and Steven made tactical errors, but 'Mac' and 'Sully' were only a half-second out of the top 10, which was pretty impressive. We had only one training run and that was in minimal conditions...and then we had a training run at the top this morning - from the start to where we ran Thursday, so we could race from the top. So," he said, "it was a little bit of a two-step, kind of like what we did in Kitzbuehel [Austria] for the Hahnenkamm a couple of years ago.
"I thought JJ [Johnson - Park City, who was 38th] was going to break in there; he'd had a good training run, but it wasn't to be. And the young guys [Erik Fisher - Middleton, ID, who was 43rd, and Chris Beckmann - Guilderland, NY, who was 41st] did a good job for their minimal time on the course. They hung in there, which is good for them..."
The men race a super combined - a downhill and one run of slalom - Sunday and then head to Kitzbuehel for the 67th Hahnenkamm Race Weekend.

AROSA, Switzerland (Jan. 20) - Steve Fisher (Breckenridge, CO) was seventh in shortened halfpipe contest Saturday to lead U.S. Snowboarding in the final day of the 2007 FIS Snowboard World Championships. Also making the 12-man final was Scotty Lago (Seabrook, NH), who finished 12th.
As rains continue to melt a deteriorating halfpipe, organizers reverted to the old FIS format where only the top six men and top three women automatically move into finals after their first qualifying run - riders in 7-25 after their first qualifying run for men and 4-15 for women then received a second run. "It was a huge challenge and a big let down," said Head Coach Mike Jankowski, "but they had to do it in order to get the contest off - we just did what we could. Sometimes it takes two runs to dial it in, but the harsh reality is that most of the team didn't even get a second chance."
Tricia Byrnes (Stratton Mountain, VT) was 13th and 2006 Olympic silver medalist Gretchen Bleiler (Aspen, CO) finished 20th as only six women moved into the finals. Mathieu Crepel of France, who became the big air World Champion on Friday, also won the men's halfpipe with a score of 46.7, while Swiss rider Manuela Laura Pesko took the women's title with 43.1 points
Warm weather had been a factor all week, forcing riders to train early in the morning each day with difficult light conditions. Qualifying for the finals also started early at 8:00 a.m., and according to Jankowski, it was difficult to avoid holes in the pipe walls.
"We literally had three hours of training on this pipe and we've been here a week, but it was amazing that they could get this contest off at all and we're glad they did," said Jankowski. "It's hard, Tommy (Czeschin, Mammoth Lakes, CA) barely missed the final by a couple of tenths, Gretchen was riding great all week in training, but she landed in a hole on her qualifying run and didn't get a second shot. Fisher and Scotty rode well and got in there, but unfortunately a podium didn't happen. We've just got to shake this off, put it behind us and head into X Games with a clear head."
The X Games open on Jan. 25 and run for three days in Aspen, CO. U.S. Snowboarding will stack riders in halfpipe, snowboardcross and slopestyle.
