Gastein Germany
The skiing area surrounding the Kreuzkogel (2,686m) is ideal because of the excellent snow conditions, explained Johann Schuster, Director of the Goldberg Lift in Sportgastein. The ski tour routes are marked, and are avalanche safe, but they are not prepared or controlled. The almost 3.7 km long off piste route runs across the steep slope underneath the Goldberg Lift towards the Knappenbäuelsee, and from here the route then leads in a southerly direction to the piste towards the mid station.

The new ski route 2 is about 2.2 km long and it starts south of the prepared piste, and ends at the bottom of the valley.

Mammoth Mountain
Punxsutawney Phil quickly crawled back into his burrow after seeing his shadow early this morning. That means six more weeks of winter in the U.S. and, more importantly, six more weeks of epic snowfall for us!
Currently, we're seeing mostly cloudy skies and light precipitation at Main Lodge with gusty winds and morning temperatures in the low 30s. We are expecting skies to clear and winds to die down soon with afternoon temperatures eventually reaching the upper 40s.
All lifts are expected to operate today with the exception of Chairs 7, 20 and 26.
Today is the big day for our much anticipated scavenger hunt. You could walk away with a 2006/2007 Mammoth Season Pass by being the first to follow the clues around the mountain.

Sugarloaf
As January came to a close Mother Nature brought us 8+ inches of new snow to provide us excellent conditions all over the mountain so if you've been thinking about skiing or riding, now is the time.
The Winter Olympics get underway in just over a week and four Sugarloafers will be there to represent the United States. You can learn more about the Sugarloaf contingent here and you can also catch snowboarder Seth Wescott on the David Letterman show tomorrow

2014: all seven applicant cities return responses
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today announced that all seven cities applying to become candidates to host the XXII Olympic Winter Games in 2014 have returned their responses to the IOC Candidature Acceptance Procedure...

Olympic venues of the past
CALGARY 1988 XV Olympic Winter Games For the first time, the Winter Olympics were extended to 16 days, including three weekends. The Alpine events were expanded from three to five with the inclusion of the super giant slalom and the Alpine combined. Team events were added in Nordic combined and ski jumping. Jumper Matti Nykänen took advantage of this new programme to win three gold medals. The speed skating races were held indoors. Yvonne van Gennip surprised the favourites with three victories. Christa Rothenburger won the 1,000m. Seven months later she earned a silver medal in cycling to become the only athlete ever to win medals in the Winter and Summer Olympics in the same year. Figure skater Katarina Witt defended her Olympic title, while on the men's side Brian Boitano edged Brian Orser in an extremely close decision. Charismatic skier Alberto Tomba made his first Olympic appearance, winning both the giant slalom and the slalom. 46 events, 57 NOCs (Nations) 1,423 athletes (301 women, 1,122 men) Nakiska today Events
