US SNOWBOARD TEAM NEWS
FURANO, Japan (Feb. 16) - Justin Reiter (Steamboat Springs, CO) and 2006 Olympian Tyler Jewell (Sudbury, MA) led the U.S. Snowboarding charge Friday, finishing 14th and 15th in parallel giant slalom as three days of World Cup snowboarding opened in Japan. Canadian Matthew Morison claimed his first World Cup victory in the men's race, while Isabella Dal Balcon of Italy took the women's contest.
Action continues Saturday with the first snowboardcross World Cup of the season, following the cancellation of events scheduled for Bad Gastein, Austria in December and Leysin, Switzerland in January. Each resort was to host two races, yet limited snowfall early in the season forced organizers to scrap each stop.
In an effort to rebuild the SBX season, an additional event has been added to the State Farm U.S. Snowboard Cup running March 9-11 in Lake Placid, NY, site of the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Games. The program now calls for two SBX races, book ending a halfpipe contest at Whiteface.
