ELENA HIGHT WINS ABOMINABLE SNOW JAM HALFPIPE MT. HOOD, Oregon (July 9) - Fresh off her first Olympics and a month of surfing, Elena Hight (South Lake Tahoe, CA) stomped a summer-time halfpipe victory Sunday at the 3rd Annual Abominable Snow Jam. The $5,000 payday was Hight's first major pipe win in the U.S. thanks to a big method, back-to-back fives and smooth frontside sevens on the 22-foot pipe.

Two More Six Seater Chairs For La Plagne La Plagne in France which alrewady operates ten six-seater chairlifts, the most in the world for one resort, is building another two of the queue-gobbling lifts this summer. Cvosting 5.2m Euros each, the new lift from La Roche to Aime 2000 will carry 2,200 skiers per hour and the other from Les Coches to Lac Noir will carry 2,400 skiers per hour. In addition to the new lifts the resort’s massive snow cannon coverage will be extended extended from Emile Allais to the start of La Roche and on the Levasset run up to the top of Quillis, making a total of 108 hectares covered by snow cannons in 2006/07. Estimated cost of the expansion is 450,000€ La Plagne’s ski area is spread across a huge playground of slopes and bowls. Many projects are in place to improve skier safety and enjoyment of the slopes: avalanche barriers; protection of slopes and tree planting; piste widening and access to many black runs made easier. The resort is lift linked to Les Arcs to create the Paradiski area, one of the world’s six-largest. La Plagne has 10 self-contained villages - each with its own character from traditional Alpine to purpose built villages. This year no fewer than 12 new two, three and four star hotels and Residences du Tourism are under construction throughout the entire La Plagne region with completion over the next two seasons. Between them more than 500 new rooms, suites and apartments will be available.

The high to the south of the South Island is becoming weaker. Meanwhile, a cold front approaches the South Island from the west. A chilly and interrupted south to southwest flow should irritate the country over the next few days.
NORTH ISLAND Friday starts off with light snow and moderate westerly winds. As the day progresses, the clouds should clear. Saturday should bring light snow showers all day with moderate westerly winds. Much the same on Sunday, with the wind decreasing as the day goes on.
SOUTH ISLAND
Nelson; Kaikoura; Friday should bring light snow showers and cloud cover during the day with light-moderate west to southwesterly winds, strengthening as the day progresses. Saturday should be similar with moderate-strong westerly winds. Sunday should start off cloudy with cloud cover clearing through the day and westerly winds becoming light.
