"Eight inches mid, ten at the summit," was my mantra as I left
the house before dawn and waded out into the shin deep snow.
Having your car in the shop is no excuse for missing a powder
morning. Fortunately, the first car stopped for my outstretched
thumb, and I made it to the Gondola with time to spare.
Celebrity guest rider, Ryan Zeller and I drooled as we looked
out the Gondola window at the freshness of Lower Valley View.
We then watched the groomer roll the last strip of Heavenly
Daze before the Doors opened to let us out. Game on!
Some early morning trees off the edge of Huffman's were our
first taste of the day's bounty. The wind had blown it a bit,
but there were still stashes everywhere. On Sundown Express
we could see the imprint from where last night's wind had
blown the snow and the piles where it landed. On High Noon,
I felt like a teenager learning to drive a stick shift: rev,
stall, rev, stall, woops, fall. It felt a lot like my rookie
year. When we entered One O'Clock, we found the right side to
be the most consistent. Thigh-deep-grin-inducing-nothing-else-
I'd-rather-be-doing-fun. We finished up our Sundown runs with
a freshly-groomed Rolex which offered the same inconsistent
depth. Once again, the right edge of the run was smoothest.
Finally, we decided to get a taste of lower Mountain with upper
and Lower Valley View. It felt more consistent down there, and
the grin is still frozen on my face.

Project Description: The Longfeng Mountain Scenic Zone is located at the west of the Zhangguangcai Mountain of the Changbai Mountains to the southeast of Wuchang City. The total planning area is 1840 km2. The area for tourism development is 240 km2 including 45 km2 of water area. The Zone is of easy access, 50 km from Wuchang city proper and 165 km from Harbin. The Zone will be divided into 6 sections. The construction of these 6 sections is as follows:
(1) Service Section: total area: 4 km2, build a hotel of 18000 m2, a parking lot of 10000 m2.
(2) Lake Scenic Area: total area: 8 km2, build an amusement park, 2 docks, etc.
(3) Fenghuang (Phoenix) Mountain Scenic Area: total area: 12 km2, build Phoenix Mountain Villa, cableway, etc.
(4) Chaofeng Resort and Fenghuang Tour Tourism Area: total area 31 km2, build ski runs, villas, and road around lake.

While the rest of Kirkwood’s guests were busy picking their lines from the chair lift, nine lucky individuals were climbing aboard Kirkwood’s brand new 12 passenger snowcat, about to ski 18 inches of fresh cold powder on the inaugural cat skiing expedition to Martin Point and Two Sentinels.

The history of the “American Shangri-La,” as Sun Valley is sometimes referred, is not too different from the magical village of legend. It all began in 1935, when Count Felix Schaffgtosch, under the hire of Union Pacific Railroad chairman Averell Harriman, set
out in search of the perfect spot for a grand American resort.
The count spent months searching the mountains of the west and surveying many areas that would latter become famous resorts, but none of them met his strict criteria.
Feeling defeated and ready to abandon the search, the Count was preparing to wire Harriman the bad news when he heard locals talking about Ketchum, an old mining town in central Idaho. The Count postponed his return home and set out for the Ketchum area.
Upon reaching the Ketchum valley, Count Felix Schaffgtosch was overwhelmed by the area and wired his employer, saying: “This combines more delightful features than any place I have ever seen in Switzerland, Austria or the U.S. for a winter resort."
The Count’s enthusiasm spread to Harriman, who rushed to join the Count, and within days purchased 4,300 acres of what was soon to become Sun Valley.

PARK CITY, Utah (Jan. 27) - Tyler Jewell (Sudbury, MA) will remain on the 2006 U.S. Olympic Snowboard Team. An arbitrator in Denver Friday denied a challenge brought by 2002 Olympic medalist Chris Klug (Aspen, CO) over selection criteria for the parallel giant slalom team and instead upheld USSA's interpretation and application of the criteria.
"Arbitration is a very important part of the Olympic athletic selection process," said U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) President and CEO Bill Marolt.
Jewell had been nominated to the team based upon the higher average of his two best World Cup points results earned during the selection period. Klug questioned the interpretation, arguing that his 15th and 16th place World Cup finishes were better results than Jewell's 9th and 24th place finishes. The arbitrator determined that USSA's use of World Cup points was valid and well understood by the athletes.
Given the overall stronger results in all other snowboard disciplines, the selection criteria allowed only one spot to USSA in men's parallel giant slalom within the IOC-mandated overall team size of 16.
"Both Chris and Tyler are outstanding, world-class athletes and either would be a great Olympian," said USSA's Vice President of Athletics Alan Ashley. "We greatly respect Chris for his accomplishments in the sport."
