Scotland's First Snowdome Opens
The first indoor snow centre in Scotland opened on Thursday, April 6th at Braehead near Glasgow. The £70million ($130m) leisure complex is the third Xscape centre to open in the UK. The first, in Milton Keynes, opened five years ago, the second in Castleford in 2004. The company behind Xscape, X Leisure, is headed by former EuroDisney boss and Olympic ice hockey player, P Y Gerbeau and has plans for more British domes as well as international ventures.
The new dome's opening party attracted some 10,000 fans. Attractions included a performance by pop star Dannii Minogue, other pop stars and a big firework display. A carnival procession led members of the public into the new building where the fun continued with face painting, stilt walkers, magicians, acrobats and much more.
There are now more than 50 snowdomes operational in 19 countries worldwide according to the World Snowdome Guide. TheBraehead dome is the world's most northerly to date, excluding 'ski tunnels' in Scandinavia for cross country skiers. The first indoor snow centres opened in the late 1980s. With four domes currently operational, the UK equals China as having the third most domes in the world, behind Japan and the Netherlands.

The snowpark (750 m by 250 m) is the place for freestylers to hang out, with bumps and jumps for everyone, a cool zone. It's a top playground for real snowsports fans, and the soft summer snow is also ideal for beginners. The glacier is accessible to pedestrians, who can visit the Ice Grotto and see the glacier and surrounding peaks (Grande Casse, Grande Sassière, Mont Pourri, the Mont Blanc range, etc.). Take a trip into the heart of the high mountains! A few tips: respect the environment, keep to the marked pistes... and don't forget your sun cream!
