Kirkwood
Tons of Spring Snow... Over 75 inches on new snow in the past week has pushed Kirkwood’s snowfall total for the season over 750 inches! Conditions are more reminiscent of February than they are April, with several feet of deep soft snow covering all elevations of the mountain. Due to the unusually deep snowpack, 200 to 325 inches, the terrain offers lines and opportunities never seen before. Check out the snow storage pile across from Chairs 5 and 6; it hasn’t been summitted yet, but we estimate it at about 70 feet!
April Events... This weekend is The Best of Kirkwood on the evening of the 8th, benefiting the Kirkwood Ski Education Foundation. It's an evening filled with fabulous cuisine, libations from local wineries and breweries, and a huge silent auction with items such as a trip to the San Juan mountains, a private weekend getaway in wine country complete with an exclusive vintner’s luncheon, and a week’s stay in a private residence in England.
The Sort of Famous Banked Slalom on April 9th is one of the favorite spring events in Tahoe! It's a modified slalom course set in Snowsnake Gully, a natural ravine that offers a unique course that can only be run in Kirkwood.
Don't Miss Kirkwood Jammin' 13... Coming up is the 13th Annual Spring Snow Party Bonanza, Jammin’13, from April 14, 15 and 16. Pond skimming, rail jams, big air comps and loads of fun events for the family make this the premiere spring snow party.

Colorado Ski Country - Tourism
This weekend Crested Butte, Monarch Mountain, and Steamboat close for the season and it's a great chance to pay them one last visit. Both Steamboat and Crested Butte are reporting 100% of their terrain open, and with the exception of Mirkwood Basin, Monarch is also nearly 100% open. To top it off, all three are expecting fresh snow today--just in time for the weekend.
This weekend won't just be about closings, though. Colorado still has 12 other resorts open beyond this weekend and both Sunlight and Wolf Creek will be re-opening for the weekend with discounted lift tickets. Sunlight has discounted their tickets to $25 and Wolf Creek will be charging $23! That means you could ski at any of 17 resorts between now and Sunday and get some great bargains in the process. On Friday, March 31 Silverton Mountain, an expert-only ski area, opened for unguided skiing for the first time after six years of extensive government permitting. Silverton Mountain, a three-year old ski area that services extreme-only terrain, will open after receiving the final thumbs up from the Bureau of Land Management.
Silverton can now allow up to 475 skiers a day to ski the ultra steep, cliff-studded mountain that has never before been skied without professional guide service. Silverton Mountain is unique as it is the only all-expert ski area in the nation with no beginner or intermediate routes down the mountain. Skiers are now allowed to brave this intense mountain on their own as long as they carry appropriate avalanche safety gear including avalanche transceivers and sign liability releases. Because the mountain is extremely challenging, skiers should expect to encounter cliffs larger than 20 feet high (with some cliffs as large as 150 feet high) or slopes steeper than 50 degrees on portions of every ski run on the mountain. Professional ski guides will still be available for those who want guided skiing.
Silverton Mountain is the highest ski area in North America with a peak elevation of 13,487 feet. With over 1,600 acres of ski-able terrain, a base elevation of 10,400 feet and over 400 inches of average annual snowfall, Silverton Mountain has become the ultimate destination for the extreme sports enthusiast.

EARTH DAY PRESENTATIONS As part of a larger and day-long Earth Day celebration in The Village at Squaw Valley, two unusual presentations have been organized by Squaw Valley Institute. "Environmental Challenges in the Tahoe Basin: Past, Present & Future" will be presented from 11:00 am to noon by Mark McLaughlin, well-known Weather Historian/Writer/Publisher. Later, from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm, the film "Running Dry" by filmmaker James Thebaut will be screened. This provocative film tells how water, like religion and ideology, has the power to move millions of people. These presentations take place on April 29 at the Palisades Room "B" in The Village at Squaw Valley, 1750 Village East Road in Squaw Valley. It's free and no tickets are required. While you are in the Village, you can also visit a great variety of displays and vendors and enjoy a lot of other Earth Day related activities. There will be music and entertainment throughout the day, and the one-of-a-kind Push, Pull or Pedal Eco Parade. For more information from Squaw Valley Institute, visit www.squawvalleyinstitute.org or call (530)
