World Freestyle Team Named
Worlds Begin in Madonna di Campiglio Next Week

PARK CITY, Utah (March 2) - The U.S. Ski Team will send 16 athletes, including defending moguls world champion Nate Roberts (Park City, UT) and nine other athletes with Olympics or World Championships experience, to the FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships March 6-10 in Madonna di Campiglio, Program Director Polly-Jo Clark announced.

The group includes nine men and seven women. The team also would have included defending women's moguls world champion Hannah Kearney (Norwich, VT) but she is recovering from knee surgery, Clark said.

The 2007 U.S. squad for Worlds (date of birth, hometown, Olympics/Worlds experience):

Men
Aerials

Ryan St. Onge, 2/7/83, Steamboat Springs, CO (2006 Olympics; 2003, '05 Worlds)

Moguls
Dave Babic, 6/13/79, Washington, VT (2003, '05 Worlds)
Jay Bowman-Kirigin, 6/30/87, Salt Lake City
David Digravio, 11/26/86, Farmington, ME

Nate Roberts, 3/24/82, Park City, UT (2005 Worlds)*

Dual Moguls

* - As defending champion, receives automatic start spot
"This is an exciting group of athletes and it shows some of the transition the Ski Team is making in this post-Olympics season," Clark said. "Each of these skiers has shown he or she can compete at the highest level. Nate's the reigning moguls gold medalist, Shannon Bahrke has won Olympics and Worlds medals, Bahrke, 'Speedy' Peterson and Michelle Roark are former World Cup champions, and seven of them have won at least one World Cup contest.

"On the other hand, although several of them are in their first season of fulltime World Cup competition, they haven't been intimidated and they've had podiums or top-5 results. It's a very strong group and we're looking for continued success in Madonna," she said.

The freestyle championships originally were scheduled for January but the snow drought, which afflicted so much of central Europe forced organizers to postpone the championships into early March.

The scheduled skier halfpipe was canceled due to lack of snow. And no U.S. athletes qualified for ski cross. "It's been a really challenging snow year for freestyle internationally, Clark said. "Most of our top U.S. ski cross athletes chose to compete in a domestic series rather than international qualifying events. And we were disappointed that conditions were such that the halfpipe could not be held at worlds as we do have athletes qualified to compete."

WCSN.com will broadcast live or same-day video streaming from freestyle Worlds and live interval scoring will be available at http://livetiming.usskiteam.com.

Alyeska

GIRDWOOD, AK – February 23, 2007 it has been a busy 75 days since John Byrne III purchased Alyeska Resort. Saturday night, Mr. Byrne unveiled his plans for the future expansion of Alyeska Resort at the annual Girdwood 2020 dinner.
Mr. Byrne and his management team have spent every waking moment working with the product from snowmaking and snow safety crews getting the resort open to working through each and every restaurant menu item. Mr. Byrne realized early on from a planning point of view there are two main objectives, to make over the existing Alyeska Resort master plan, and to develop a conceptual master plan for expansion into Winner Creek. “Each objective with the goal of transforming Girdwood into the four season resort we all believe it is capable of,” comments Mr. Byrne.
In an effort to move these tasks along expeditiously Mr. Byrne has put together a separate team to tackle each task. In respect to the existing resort Mr. Byrne has engaged Stantec Corporation and their lead resort planner Bruce Erickson. Mr. Erickson plans to integrate a village setting with beginner and intermediate slopes, upgrade chair lifts, create a setting for downhill racing, nordic tracks, kids, and disabled programs. All of this while maintaining the environmental values, sustainability and community responsibilities in Girdwood.
The second task is the fantastic opportunity Winner Creek presents. Mr. Byrne explains, “Our plan is to have a conceptual master plan on the Mayors desk no later than early September as well as a draft development agreement which if executed I will be prepared to fund.” Mr. Byrne along with his team intend to diligently pursue the execution of the development plan prior to the end of 2007 addressing some of community needs such as a High School, affordable housing, summer mountain biking, a summer music venue and more attractions and amenities for the hotel. Mr. Byrne’s team includes, Don McLean, V.P. of Alyeska Resort and Director of Real Estate, Rich Eidem V.P. of Alyeska Resort and Owner Representative, and Mark Weakland Managing Director at Alyeska resort who brings over 20 years of resort lodging management experience. “This will help transition Girdwood into the four season resort we all envision it to be,” concludes Mr. Byrne.
Alyeska Resort, located 40 miles south of Anchorage, is Alaska's premier year-round resort. Tucked amid the Chugach Mountains, Alyeska Ski Resort offers world-class skiing and snowboarding with stunning views of the Turnagain Arm. The 1,400 acres of terrain with 2,500 feet of vertical rise, is serviced by nine lifts including a 60-passenger aerial tramway, and a high-speed bubble lift. Ski-in/ski-out access available from The Hotel Alyeska which features the luxurious Spa at Alyeska, fine dining at the Seven Glaciers and Sakura Teppanyaki Restaurants, and a mountain-view indoor heated pool and whirlpool spa.
