Sugarloaf
CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine - Sugarloaf/USA will become a coveted destination for new schoolers in the 2006-07 winter season with the introduction of a new marquee terrain park that promises bigger, better and more features than have ever been offered at the Maine resort. The new terrain park is just one of many major projects totaling nearly $1 million completed this summer to improve the overall Sugarloaf experience.

The yet unnamed park was cut from terrain between the SuperQuad and the Lower Narrow Gauge trail and will take freeskiing and riding to unequaled heights. The new trail is up to 400 feet wide and nearly a half a mile long to accommodate a series of jumps, features and rails. “This new park will let us build bigger, better, safer, and more fun features from start to finish,” said Tim Norton, Sugarloaf’s park manager. The new park will be staffed by park rangers seven days a week to ensure the features are in pristine and safe condition.

The park begins at Peavy Cross Cut near the bottom of the Competition Hill trail and runs parallel to the SuperQuad. Skiers will exit on to Schipper’s Streak, the lower hook off Lower Narrow Gauge.

The autumn foliage is a flaming torch lighting the way to winter.” If you haven’t been here lately, let me tell you that the torch is as bright as I’ve ever seen it with miles of fiery gold, red, orange, and yellow across the mountains of western Maine. If there’s truth in the poet’s words, we’re in for one heck of a winter because the fall is spectacular.

Since we’re on the subject of winter, if you haven’t already locked in your All For One Pass, time and quantities are running out. The deadline to get one is Oct. 10 but sales to date are pointing to a sell-out before then and, once they’re gone, that’s it

Treble Cone

School holidays are in full swing at Treble Cone this week. We’ve got heaps of families coming up to enjoy our spring snow conditions so we’re all having fun on the slopes and making the most of the final weeks of the season.
We had some pretty chaotic weather over the past week, with lots of strong winds and even a rather spectacular electrical storm on Saturday night! However, every cloud has a silver lining – or in this case, it was snow-filled – and we’ve had a fresh 10cm at the top of the Saddle Basin in the past 48 hours alone and a further 35cm late last week on the upper mountain.

Photos: Treble Cone Marketing
Next Sunday, October 8th, will be the final day of the 2006 season. But we won’t be going out with a whimper… more like a very soggy bang!
Skiers & boarders will attempt to conquer the dreaded Opal Nera slush pit at the bottom of the Platter slopes. Can you make it across to the other side without landing in the slush? Participate if you’re game, just turn up on the day to enter. And don’t forget to dress to impress as it’s a fancy dress day too!

NINE OLYMPIANS HEADLINE 2007 U.S. FREESTYLE TEAM

PARK CITY, Utah (Sept. 28) - Reigning moguls world champions Nate Roberts (Park City, UT) and Hannah Kearney (Norwich, VT) plus former Olympic medalist Shannon Bahrke (Tahoe City, UT) are among a 30-member U.S. Freestyle Ski Team for the 2007 season.
Program Director Polly-Jo Clark said the squad includes 14 men and 16 women; nine athletes are Olympians. "I'm excited for this season. We've got a great crew of athletes who've been working hard all summer and are looking forward to the competition season," Clark said. "It's a great mix of veterans and young guns who will keep everyone on their toes." The 2007 U.S. Freestyle Ski Team (with age, hometown, event and * if an Olympian):

A Team - Men: David Babic (27; Washington, VT; moguls), Jeret Peterson (24; Boise, ID; aerials*), Nate Roberts (23; Park City, UT; moguls) and Ryan St. Onge (23; Steamboat Springs, CO; aerials*). Women: Shannon Bahrke (25; Tahoe City, CA; moguls*), Emily Cook (27; Belmont, MA; aerials*), Hannah Kearney (20; Norwich, VT; moguls*), Michelle Roark (31; Denver; moguls*), Laurel Shanley (23; Squaw Valley, CA; moguls) and Jillian Vogtli (33; Ellicotville, NY; moguls*)

B Team - Men: Jeremy Bloom (24; Loveland, CO; moguls*), David DiGravio (19; Farmington, ME; moguls). Women - Kelly Hilliman (28; Amherst, NY; aerials), Jana Lindsey (22; Black Hawk, SD; aerials*), Kate Reed (22; Montrose, CO; aerials) and Shelly Robertson (27; Reno, NV; moguls)

C Team - Men: Zac Amidan (24; Ogden, UT; aerials), Jay Bowman-Kirigin (19; Salt Lake City; moguls), Austin Cummings (22; Heber City, UT; aerials), Landon Gardner (21; Park City, UT; moguls), Sho Kashima (19; Zephyr Cove, NV; moguls), Tim Massucco (23; Park City, UT; aerials), Michael Morse (25; Duxbury, MA; moguls) and Tim Preston (22; Campton, NH; moguls). Women - McKenzy Golding (19; Reno, NV; moguls), Heather McPhie (22; Bozeman, MT; moguls), Eliza Outtrim (21; Hamden, CT; moguls), Lacy Schnoor (21; Draper, UT; aerials), Kayla Snyderman (18; Winchester, MA; moguls) and Emiko Torito (24; Denver; moguls)

"These athletes are fantastic people with a lot of character to go with their talent. It's fun to be a part of it and we're expecting some intense competition for the World Cup spots and for the World Championships Team in January," Clark said. "Some will need to gain experience on the World Cup and everything that comes with it. And the veterans know exactly what it takes - it's time to do it." Although named to the Ski Team for the '07 season, Bloom, Peterson - the 2005 World Cup aerials champion, Reed and Hilliman are not expected to compete this winter, Clark said. Hilliman is recuperating from injury, Peterson and Reed are taking the year off, and are expected to return for the 2008 season. Bloom, a two-time Olympian, two-time World Cup moguls champion and 2003 dual moguls world champion, is attempting to play in the NFL but has been sidelined by a hamstring problem. Several headline athletes retired: Olympic bronze medalist and current dual moguls world champ Toby Dawson, 2002 Olympic aerials silver medalist and two-time World Championships bronze medalist Joe Pack, 2002 Olympic moguls silver medalist Travis Mayer, 2003 moguls World Cup champion Travis Cabral and aerialist Eric Bergoust, the 1998 Olympic champion, '99 Worlds gold medalist and a two-time World Cup aerials king. The World Cup aerials season lost its season opener Sept. 2-3 because of poor snow conditions at Australia's Mount Buller. The aerials season resumes Dec. 9-10 at Jilin Beida Lake, China, and the first moguls contest is Dec. 14 in Tignes, France. U.S. World Cups are Jan. 11-13 at the Chevrolet Freestyle International at Deer Valley, Utah, and the Nature Valley Freestyle Cup Jan. 18-20 at Lake Placid, N.Y.
The World Championships will be Jan. 23-28 in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy.

SNOWBOARD NEWS
OLYMPIC MEDALIST, TWO-TIME WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS MEDALIST FLETCHER RETIRES
PARK CITY, Utah (Sept. 28) - Following a storied career spanning 10 years and three Olympic Games, Rosey Fletcher (Girdwood, AK), the 2006 Olympic parallel giant slalom bronze medalist and two-time World Championships medalist, is retiring from World Cup competition, U.S. Snowboarding announced Thursday.
"It's all gone by so fast," said Fletcher, who collected eight World Cup wins and a dozen other World Cup podium finishes since 1996, plus PGS silver medals at the 1999 and 2001 World Championships. "Throughout those years, I was so busy chasing after goals and dreams, that now when I look back on all the places I was able to visit, all the great friendships I've formed and all the wonderful life experiences I've had, all because of snowboarding, it's just - Wow!"
A proud Alaskan, Fletcher's first official season with U.S. Snowboarding was in 1999 following the Nagano Olympic Games, where she was the first U.S. rider named to the first U.S. Olympic Snowboard Team. "I joined the program because of Jan Wengelin; he was the best coach I'd ever had and he was heading the first U.S. alpine snowboarding program. I was always looking for a medal, but after my results in Salt Lake City [26th] I thought I was done," said Fletcher, who knocked herself out of competition in both 1998 and 2002 by falling.
"It was devastating to put every cell, every hair into something and not accomplish it. Not once, but twice, I had stood in the start gate, wearing a tight suit mind you, and failed. Nobody tells you how that feels. So going into 2006, I approached the Olympics like I was a fan. I suppose the old saying holds pretty true; 'there's nothing more dangerous than having nothing to lose.'"

Fletcher converted that relaxed approach into an Olympic team birth just one month before Opening Ceremonies with a second place World Cup finish in Kreischberg, Austria. She then went on to shock the alpine snowboarding world with a bronze medal in Bardoneccia that was inches away from gold, narrowly losing to Daniela Mueli of Switzerland, who would go on to become the Olympic champion. "Rosey works very hard at what she does, and in snowboarding she took her craft very seriously," said U.S. Snowboarding Head Coach Peter Foley. "It was such a joy for me to see her succeed in Torino; that kind of payoff happens to very few people in their lives."
Yet instead of kicking back and easing into retirement, Fletcher found herself with a job offer from Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich and is working as a community development specialist for the Alaskan urban hub. "I was speaking at a fundraiser just a month after the Games and said something in the speech about 'not being sure what my next career move was.' The Mayor came up to me after and asked me to call him, saying he had 'the perfect opportunity for me.' "So I went from wearing snowboarding boots everyday to heels, but that's not the hardest part. It's much more difficult going from doing something I'm really good at, to doing something where I have to ask questions about everything. But it's fun and I know that I am making a difference, which is important to me." Fletcher plans to continue "being a part of the snowboarding family" and will reside in Alaska.

Don’t even think about storing away those skis and boards! With less than 3 weeks to go for the 2006 season, there’s still plenty of snow cover and awesome spring skiing and riding to be enjoyed across the mountain. We welcomed a top-up of fresh snow over the past couple of days, with 10-15cm falling since Saturday on the upper mountain.. Snow cover is presently 40cm at top of Volkswagen Express & 117cm at top of Saddle Quad chairlift. Click here to view our webcams.
The cool mornings are giving way to balmy September days. The snow is softening up nicely and providing superior spring conditions in the Southern Lakes region. Our slopes team are doing a fantastic job grooming trails in the Home and Saddle Basin – with Bullet, Main Street & Big Skite skiing and riding particularly well. The forecast is for some unsettled weather this week, which is due to bring even more fresh snow, but this will give way to finer days – perfect timing for the school holidays.
Some 40 firefighters are this week hoping to extinguish rumours that firefighters are all about water... Firefighters from across New Zealand are taking to the snow to compete in their National Ski Championships. Giant Slalom and Slalom events are scheduled for tomorrow (THURSDAY). Teams from different fire stations will race against each other in these events, with one station being found champ at the end of the day.

Snowbird, Utah –
Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort received the first snowfall of the season Friday evening when a strong system moved through Little Cottonwood Canyon depositing approximately one foot of snow atop 11,000-foot Hidden Peak and blanketing the entire resort.
“There is still work to be done on the new Peruvian Tunnel and Peruvian Express chairlift before winter arrives, but this first snowfall is exciting for everyone who loves to ski,” said Snowbird President Bob Bonar .
Snowbird’s Snow Safety Department does not officially begin seasonal snowfall records until Nov. 1 so this week’s snowfall will not count toward the annual accumulation that averages 500 inches of light, dry powder.
Offering the longest season in Utah , Snowbird is scheduled to open for the 2006-07 season Saturday, Nov. 18. Last winter Snowbird received 586 inches of snow enabling skiing and riding from the Tram until Memorial Day.
North America’s first ski area tunnel, the Peruvian Tunnel, will greet skiers and riders for the 2006-07 winter season. Additional upgrades around the resort include a new high-speed quad chairlift, storm monitoring with the Snowbird SnowCam and Cliff Lodge room renovations. Live shots of the current storm’s snow accumulation can be seen using Snowbird’s new SnowCam at www.snowbird.com/snowcam.
Not to be deterred by the snow, the 34th Annual Snowbird Oktoberfest will continue with dancing, live music, authentic food and fun for the kids. Four more weekends of the festival continue through Sunday, Oct. 8. Oktoberfest hours are noon to 6 p.m. and admission is free.
Located just 29 miles from Salt Lake City International Airport , Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort is North America ’s most accessible year-round resort. For the latest information and updated photos from the mountain,

Fernie, BC – NEW this season,...
The views will take your breath away at the new Lost Boys Café, Fernie Alpine Resort’s newest on-mountain addition for the 2006-2007 ski season.
Located at the top of the Timber Express Quad Chair, the Lost Boys Café will provide skiers and riders a beautiful setting to satisfy their appetites. Enjoy a piping hot baked potato with traditional and exotic toppings, fresh baked goods, Starbucks espresso coffees, and specialty items only available at The Lost Boys Café. This licensed facility will feature Kokanee draft beer and a fine selection of E&J Gallo wines. Outside, the wraparound deck will showcase spectacular views of the White Pass, Elk Valley and the town of Fernie.
The 1080 square foot building is an alpine-themed timber and stone structure. Many of the timber logs used in construction have come from the run grooming and glading projects that occurred this summer to further enhance the resort’s 107 runs and glades
The Lost Boys Café is named after the pass of the same name that sits outside of the current ski area boundary above Siberia Bowl. It was originally named after a couple of young local boys who went backcountry touring through the Pass and were lost and subsequently rescued in the area before the resort was expanded to that side. Many backcountry skiers have followed in their footsteps, sure they could find their way back to the boundaries of the Resort before nightfall, but each year the ski patrol responds to missing backcountry skiers and riders that have been drawn into the trap of Lost Boys Pass and spent a night in the cold.
The café is expected to open in time for the season opening on December 9th.

Weather Pattern: A high pressure system just southwest of Victoria extends a ridge across the State to another high over the Tasman Sea. The western high centre will be slow moving today and Saturday before moving eastwards to join the Tasman centre later on Sunday and Monday. A weakening cold front will brush southern Victoria on Monday as it slides southeastwards
You won?t believe how good it is here at Falls Creek over on the runs in Sun Valley. You think there?s no snow, that?s not true. We?ve been skiing and boarding a wide range of runs and truly it?s looking fabulous each morning. The groomers have been working their magic and the corduroy is sweet first thing in the morning.
First thing head out and do a run on Drover?s to warm up, then hit the beginner terrain park for a few jibs. Shoot over to Nastar for a run through the trees then Main St is the next one to try. Head over to Scotts race course later in the morning where the snow is still firm as the sun hasn?t reached too high in the sky. Once you?ve conquered the race course, hit the advanced terrain park at Ruined Castle followed by a nice run down Ruined Castle itself. Grab a bite at Cloud 9, Dicky Knees or Maggies and then do it all in reverse. There?s heaps of terrain here and Falls is offering the most skiing and boarding in Victoria. The temps have been sub zero providing the snowmakers an opportunity to pump out heaps of snow this week, adding to the base. We?ve actually increased our average snow depth to 62 cms average.

First Snow
Crystal Mountain , WA- Snow fell during the early morning hours at Crystal Mountain covering the peaks creating a winter-like setting. This is very early for the first snowfall of the year, usually we see the first snowflakes fall towards the end of September and it stirs up the excitement. This early snowfall has employees very excited for another possible early start to the ski season. Last year Crystal Mountain opened November 4th, which was the earliest opening in 28 years. “I couldn’t believe my eyes when I woke up this morning,” said Kerry McCarthy of Gig Harbor “big flakes were falling and the ground was white, I thought I was dreaming.” Typically Crystal Mountain opens mid-November. There is no opening date set for the 2006-2007 ski season; it’s still too early to make that call.

Ski Portillo
Portillo is the oldest ski area in South America, and its history holds an important place in the legend of skiing. It is a history of adventurers and the Andes, and of dreams and accomplishments in the wonderful world of skiing. IT BEGAN WITH THE RAILROADS In 1887, the Chilean government contracted English engineers to study the feasibility of a railway through the Andes at Uspallata Pass, which could transport goods and passengers from Chile's Central Valley to the Argentine city of Mendoza, and eventually to Buenos Aires. The English engineers then contracted two Norwegian engineers, Elmar Rosenquist and Michel Hermundsen, to conduct winter studies of the proposed line. The Norwegians spent two winters in 1887 and 1888 traversing the region on skis. They were surely the first skiers to cross the slopes of the Portillo ski area. Two years later, in 1889, the Chilean government hired 14 Norwegian skiers to transport mail between Chile and Argentina. We are told that the plan was not successful and was not repeated. During the construction of the railroad, skiing was common among the engineers in charge, most of whom were Englishmen who used skis in their work - and no doubt for enjoyment. Following the inauguration of the international railroad in 1910, these pioneers were followed by recreational skiers who used the train to get to the top of the mountain at Caracoles so they could ski down to the Juncal crossing - an area that is now within the Portillo ski resort. Thus, the Transandean Railway became the first ski lift in Chile.

The Asian stop of the FIS Grand Prix Ski Jumping 2006 became a celebration of the blue and white flags. Finland’s Janne Happonen returned to the series by winning both of the competitions held in Hakuba (JPN) last weekend. Antonin Hajek (CZE) managed the first GP podium finishes of his career by placing third on both days.
In the Grand Prix standings, Wolfgang Loitzl (AUT) – who was second in last year’s tournament – now leads with 404 points, 47 points ahead of Simon Ammann (SUI) and 59 points ahead of Adam Malysz (POL). There are two competitions remaining in this year’s tournament: in Klingenthal (GER) on 30th September and in Oberhof (GER) on 3rd October
Successful Grass Skiing season finishes
Ingrid Hirschofer (AUT) An exciting 2006 Grass Skiing season has now finished. The international calendar kicked off at the end of May with a series of FIS races held in Altenseebach (GER), Traisen and Bad Tatzmannsdorf (AUT), Frais (ITA) and Wilhelmsburg (AUT). The first highlight event was the FIS Junior World Championships in Horní Lhota (CZE) which featured competitors from nine countries. Despite the short preparation time, all participants and friends of Grass Skiing were delighted by the high standard of the event. The JWSC also showed that the sport can look forward to exciting competitions with highly talented athletes far into the future!
The JWSC were followed by the innovations in this year‘s schedule: the Swiss Tour and Bohemia Cup, both of which exceeded all expectations. On the Swiss Tour, five FIS races took place in four days in Bömmeli and Marbach (SUI) while the Bohemia Cup hosted the Grass Skiing family in the Czech Republic for ten days. Following a FIS race in Branna, the pre-WSC took place in Olesnice v Orlickych horach and the Cup culminated in the first Grass Skiing World Cup race in Ceske Petrovice.

Two days of technical inspections together with the host broadcaster as well as preparatory discussions preceded the seven-hour general meeting. Following the opening by FIS Vice President, President of the Japanese Ski Association (SAJ) and Vice President of the Sapporo Organizing Committee, Yoshiro Ito, General Secretary Hishashi Sasaki led the 161-page presentation. The respective OC department directors presented their status reports with detailed diagrams, charts and explanatory comments as the FIS Technical Delegates, Race Directors and Marketing and Communications Director as well as the EBU and APF representatives added their feedback. Constructive dialogue and collaboration between all parties summarizes the spirit of cooperation among the parties. A special highlight of the championships will be the events that will take place in the magnificent Sapporo Dome, including the Opening Ceremony on Thursday 22nd February. The Dome is a flexible multi-purpose facility which can be set up with different surfaces and is home to the city’s successful baseball team the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters and the football team Sapporo Konsadore as well as numerous other events. It is quite appropriate for a nation renowned for being at the forefront of innovation to host the first indoor ski championships competitions, including the Cross-Country individual and team sprint and the Nordic Combined sprint events, at the 2007 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships.
It was all hands on deck last Tuesday and Wednesday, as key VANOC officials, including Eric Fremont, VANOC Manager for Freestyle and Snowboard, Joseph Fitzgerald, FIS Coordinator for Freestyle and Marcel Looze, FIS Snowboard Race Director, together with representatives from the Canadian Snowsports Association (CSSA) and Canadian Snowboard Federation (CSF) including Dave Pym and Tom McIllfaterick, reviewed the developments at Cypress Mountain. They were accompanied by The Hon. Michael Chong, Canadian Minister for Sport and Intergovernmental Affairs, whose visit followed the announcement last week by Canadian provincial and federal governments of an extra 110 million CDN dollars in funding for VANOC. Cypress Mountain, the to-be-site of Snowboard and Freestyle Skiing competitions in 2010, is located in North Vancouver and will be the only snow sport venue in the greater Vancouver area.

Lake Louise
Calgary, AB – September 14, 2006 – With just 58 days to go until the start of the ski season at Lake Louise Mountain Resort, winter storms are expected to reach the Canadian Rockies this week. Says Jim Roemer of www.bestskiweather.com, “A surprise snow storm could blast mid-upper levels from Fernie to Lake Louise by later Thursday.”
Just how much snow is expected?
Roemer states that ‘Some heavy amounts of wet snow is possible around 3,500 – 4,500 feet before Friday, and lowering freezing levels Friday or Saturday.” The historical Farmer’s Almanac is showing a positive outlook for skiers this winter. The almanac, which claims its forecasts are accurate 80-85% of the time, is predicting that this winter may be especially snowy, with above-normal snowfall in British Columbia and the Rockies. The most widespread snowfalls are predicted to occur in mid- to late November, early to mid-January and mid- to late February. Get your turns in on both sides of the Rockies this season with a four resort RCR Super Pass, providing a season of skiing at Lake Louise Mountain Resort, Fernie Alpine Resort, Kimberley Alpine Resort, and Nakiska. Midweek RCR Adult Super Passes are currently fall sale priced at $749 until September 30th. Call 1-800-258-SNOW (7669) or buy your pass online at www.skircr.com/membership.

All About Alex
A FEW DAYS A GO IPOSTED a notice of the death of Alex Cushing Founder, chairman, "Lord of the Boards" Granite Chief's "Chief" ,.....

Photo: SV Ski Corp
The paragraphs below are from a video and Book"Squaw The first FIFTY Years"
Borrowed from Squaw Valley Ski Corp

On a cold spring day in 1955, in Paris, France, Alexander Cushing managed to secure Squaw Valley USA as the site for the VIII Olympic Winter Games. To this day, many wonder how he convinced the International Olympic Committee to select a town with no mayor, and a ski resort with just one chairlift, two rope tows, and a fifty-room lodge. Some say that Cushing's interest in the Olympics was a lark. In fact, he was hopeful from the start and his success evidenced steadfast determination. It all began on December 26th, 1954 when he spotted an article in the San Francisco Chronicle stating that Reno, NV and Anchorage, AK had submitted bids to hold the 1960 Winter Olympics. Wouldn't it be marvelous publicity for Cushing's young resort to announce that Squaw Valley was also prepared to host the international event? Though his first call to a newspaper was met with laughter, Cushing pressed on and found an ally in Curly Grieves, the Sports Editor for the San Francisco Examiner. An eight column banner headline soon announced Squaw Valley's bid for the Games.
Word spread quickly and on January 7th, 1955 Cushing addressed the U.S. Olympic Committee in New York. Though prepared with a speech and film, he didn't get an opportunity to use either. The committee was so engaged with the "idea of a California valley with an annual snowfall of 450 inches, and a downhill event with areas that had never even been schussed successfully," recalls Cushing, that he found himself buried under an avalanche of questions and controversy. In the end, Squaw Valley emerged as the USOC's choice for the 1960 Winter Games.
Upon hearing the news, International Olympic Committee President Avery Brundage told Cushing, "the USOC obviously has taken leave of their senses." IOC member John J. Garland advised, "I think you are on a wild goose chase. Innsbruck has the 1960 bid locked up." With an eclectic but knowledgeable group including Pulitzer Prize-winning Chicago Daily News columnist George Weller, friend Marshall Haseltine, and French war hero Joe Marillac, Cushing organized a powerful campaign. He lobbied for support from all over the world, including the South American delegates, who ordinarily took little interest in the Winter Games. Cushing commissioned a 3,000 pound model of Squaw Valley, so large that it didn't fit in the IOC Exhibit Hall. He convinced the U.S. Ambassador to have it placed in a room at the Embassy. Viewing the model required a fifteen-minute walk from the IOC Headquarters, which Cushing repeated with each group of delegates. Whether it was the campaign, the model, or Cushing's presentation, something swayed the committee members. Garmisch Partenkirschen and St. Moritz were eliminated in the first vote. Innsbruck and Squaw Valley were left to vie for the Games until a second vote.
Committee members continued to assure Cushing that his case was hopeless. Innsbruck even began assigning living quarters to various delegations. Marillac however, proceeded to convince the European-dominated Federacion Internacionale du Ski (FIS), who were committed to the Alps' glory, that Squaw Valley was technically sufficient. Cushing's campaign succeeded through the power of an idea - a return to the Olympic ideals of simplicity with a focus on athleticism and diversity. His bid, written in French, English, and Spanish, declared that "the Olympics belong to the world. Not just one continent."
On June 17, 1955, Cushing and his team had visited forty-two IOC delegates, yet remained uncertain of victory. Then, with a final vote of 32 to 30, the IOC chose Squaw Valley to host the Games. Word spread quickly across the globe, followed by shock and disbelief. While Cushing's team celebrated, athletes wondered about winter in California. Cushing immediately began work to attract top people to the Organizing Committee and California started planning the necessary infrastructure.
During the next four and a half years, the Squaw Valley team, the California Organizing Committee, the State of California, Placer County and thousands of others worked to build a venue worthy of the Olympics. Freeways, hotels, motels, and restaurants were built in short order. Willy Schaeffler, an Olympic course designer, arrived immediately after the Games were awarded to Squaw Valley. He walked the mountain for four days before appearing in Cushing's office and declaring the site worthy. Because of his involvement in the 1936 Games and the 1952 World Championships in Aspen, he understood international standards, and worked tirelessly to create the skiing events for the Games. Access roads, bridges, chairlifts, athletes' housing, the Blyth Ice Arena, a speed skating oval, and a ski jump sprang from the Valley floor. Two unique buildings, the Nevada Visitors' Center, once the Opera House, and now the Far East Center, and the California Visitors' Center, now the Members' Locker building, still serve Squaw Valley USA today.
The VIII Winter Olympic Games, held in Squaw Valley in 1960, marked many notable events and achievements:
The 1960 Winter Olympics were the first Games held in the Western United States and the first to be televised. The Olympic Village Inn was built to house more than 750 athletes; it allowed all athletes to be housed under one roof for the first and only time in modern Olympic history. Computers were used to tabulate results for the first time. The glass-walled IBM processor drew almost as many observers as the competitions. After a virtually snowless early season, a heavy Sierra storm moved in to save the Games. At the Opening Ceremonies, dense snowfall greeted the Greek delegation as it led the athletes' procession. The storm broke and the sky cleared just as Vice President Richard Nixon declared the Games officially open. Walt Disney, Head of Pageantry, oversaw the release of two thousand Doves into the cold air, and 4,000 California high school bandsmen provided accompaniment for Andrea Meade Lawrence as she skied down Papoose to hand the torch to Kenneth Henry, who lit the Olympic Flame. Figure skater Carol Heiss took the Olympic Oath on behalf of all participating athletes, marking the first time that a woman enjoyed the honor. She later won the gold medal with first place rankings from all nine judges. The largest group yet gathered to see a winter sports program in America convened on February 22, 1960 as over 47,000 spectators packed into the Valley. Frenchman Jean Vuarnet became the first Olympian to compete on metal skis, a pair of Allais 60's. He won gold for France in the Men's Downhill. At the height of the Cold War, with the whole world watching, the U.S. defeated the Russian Hockey Team in a heart pounding, down to the wire, 3-2 victory. Then, with the help of Russian Team Captain Nikolai "Solly" Sologubov, the U.S. won its first gold medal in Hockey. In the minutes before the last period of the championship game with Czechoslovakia, "Solly" told the Americans to take breaths from an oxygen tank. Each player was given a "hit" and the "Team of Destiny" scored six goals in the last period, beating Czechoslovakia 9-4.

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort: New Investments of Over $100 Million Anticipated by 2010
Golden, BC… With an estimated $150 million already invested at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort turning its vision into reality, the momentum is expected to boldly continue over the coming three years with additional infrastructure and real estate projects. Resort officials announced today they anticipate new commitments of over $100 million by 2010 which will facilitate the continued growth and evolution of the plaza amenities, base village, mountain terrain and an enhanced overall guest experience.
“Six years of stable growth have paved a bright future for Kicking Horse Mountain Resort,” said Arijan van Vuure, President, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. “From the very beginning we’ve set achievable visitation targets and have exceeded industry growth averages year over year. We have pursued selective real estate projects unique to the market and have focused on establishing strong business fundamentals which has put us in a strong position moving forward,” he said.
To continue to stimulate growth Kicking Horse Mountain Resort’s primary shareholders have committed to invest over $15 million in the coming three years to enhance mountain infrastructure and add complementary amenities. More details of the resort’s capital plan are expected to be released in September 2006.
Over the coming three years, more than $85 million in property development is expected to be attracted to the resort. Ongoing resort development will further stimulate the addition of resort amenities including restaurants, bars and retail. Some of the project highlights include:
• the completion of the luxurious 48-unit Palliser Lodge in December 2006;
• the completion of the high end 18-unit Selkirk Resort Homes;
• development of a new lodge in Gondola Plaza adding 50-units and additional retail and shopping;
• development of the exclusive Cabins of Kicking Horse project;
• development of the Aspens - town homes featuring 30 upscale one and two bedroom units.

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort currently boasts over 2,750 acres of world-class terrain, two condominium

Need a Lift?

Val d‘Isère The resort of Tignes, detachable 6-seater chairlift from Doppelmayr.Val d’Isère/Tignes in the French département of Savoy is one of the biggest and most attractive ski regions in the Western Alps: 133 ski trails with a total length of 300 km; from an altitude of 1,500 m up to the glacier regions of the three-anda- half-thousanders. There are ten reversible aerial trams, almost 50 chairlifts and some 40 surface lifts. Tignes has three districts; one of these is Tignes-le-Lac with a population of 2,300 inhabitants, which at 2,000 m ranks as Europe’s highest municipality. Tignes hosted the first free-style world championships in 1989 and the Winter Olympics (Albertville) in 1992. This ski area has been named “Espace Killy” to commemorate the famous French skier Jean-ClaudeKilly, who comes from the region (1968 winner of three gold medals – downhill, giant slalom and slalom). Tichots is one of the mountain faces in the ski region. The new 6-CLD also has an important function as a feeder from the car park in the valley.(The chairlift only operates in the winter season.)
World’s first tangential loading facility for a 6-seater chairlift
In order to provide the required high transport capacity of 3,600 PPH, Doppelmayr implemented a particularly ingenious innovation in the form of the world’s first “tangential loading” facility for a 6-seater chairlift. The key feature here is the configuration of the path traced by the chairs as they transit the loading area in conjunction with a loading carpet. The chairs approach the loading area at an angle of roughly 45°. The loading gates open at staggered intervals, allowing the skiers to advance one by one onto the loading carpet. The resulting staggered starting positions now form a line in parallel with the chair. By the time the skiers stop at the end of the loading carpet they are back in a straight line, ready to board the approaching chair. It is this combination of angled chair position and loading carpet which crucially reduces the time interval between carriers and thus increases transport capacity. As the regulations stipulate a maximum capacity of 3,000 PPH for a conventional 6-seater chairlift, special tests were required in the case of Tichots, which led to approval being granted in November.
Doppelmayr pioneered the tangential loading system
Doppelmayr ranks as the forerunner of this system, the first of which was installed on the 8-CLD Les Tommeuses in Tignes in 2002 (transport capacity 4,500 PPH). The customer, Société des Télépheriques de la Grande Motte (STGM), has beena Doppelmayr customer for 15 years: during the course of the past two years, STGM has purchased a total of three chairlifts from Doppelmayr. In the case of Tichots, Doppelmayr was awarded the contract in May 2005 and the installation went into service at the end of November, following a six-month construction period.
6-CLD Tichots
Transport capacity 3,600 PPH
Trip time 4.3 min
Travel speed 5.0 m/s
Carriers 85
Interval 6.0 s
Inclined length 1,169 m
Vertical rise 361 m

Obereggen - Italy Part of the Latemar Ski Center, have launched for the 2006/2007 winter two brand new chairlifts.
The super modern four chairs lift "Obereggen", realized by Doppelmayr, replaces the old quads, allowing to increase the passenger per hour ratio to 2.400/h. And the old ski lift on the "Pala di Santa" Mountain will bee replaced by an automatic four chair lift with babble.
The new chairlift "Obereggen":
Length: 516 m
Transportation: 2.400 passenger per hour
Time: 1 min 54 sec
Valley station: 1939 m
Mountain station: 2032 m

Saalbach / Austria: 3 new lifts in winter 2006/07
In summer 2006 3 lifts will be replaced with modern cable-cars.
8 person cable car "'Schattberg Sprinter" (replaces the existing chair lift "Westgipfel III")
6 person chairlift "Schönleitengipfelbahn" with canopy (bubble) and heated seats (replaces the existing drag lifts "Karlift" & "Weißbachlift")

Rhode Island, Squaw Valley California and The Entire Ski Industry

Photo: SV Ski Corp " Alex's House"

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Alexander Cushing, Chairman President of Squaw Valley Ski Corporation,... my backyard.
"Alex" was key in bringing the 1960 Winter Olympics To California and convincing The USOC that Squaw had the Mountian, the ability and the desire to Host the first winter games to be on TV and put Lake Tahoe on the map as a major winter sports destination.
I personally could recite many of the "Firsts" he was responsible for. I could look forward to his annual letter to the pass holders mentioning the "Steely eyed bankers" when there was an increase in prices. His views, especially of Copa Cabana , south american beaches and his travels were always light hearted enough to make "THE LETTER" amusing.
His reference in the early days naming some of the lifts after east coast locations, was interesting. Newport, East Broadway, the original Tram, car 1 , The "Conneticut General".
Alex, did things his way "Full speed ahead" God bless him.
During the Olympic Torch relay that passed thru Squaw in 2002, I had a chance to speak WITH him as he smiled with the OLYMPIC flame burning behind him.
Alex sent me a personal letter a couple years back thanking me for a X-mas card. ...The Night before X-mas and all around SV, the chairs were ready,....ready as can be. The six packs were hung, and serviced "with care", just like His hat, Alex was there,....
I have come to use "ONWARD" a direct result of Alex's influence on my letter writing style.
To those that have experienced SQUAW, there is a huge loss. To those Alex has faced in business dealings, a unique character!. To those that have worked for SV Ski Corp, there is nothing like "that family".
The house under Squaw Peak lift with the 2 vintage snocats, is silent. The "Cushing Classic" Pond Crossing a ritual with springs "Writing on the Wall" that the end of the season is at hand, now seems like a sacred honor.
A Pioneer, a good man, a visionary and a deeply respected man I cherished in my own way.
To "Nan" his family, my friends at SV. I am truly saddened for the great loss , Thanks, for the Memories
The Slopes are silent

IT WAS A DAY OF BIG AIR - SKIERS, SNOWBOARDERS, SNOWMOBILE AND FMX

Photo: Cardrona MArketing /cardronagames
Two of Wanaka´s best snow sports athletes, skier Jossi Wells and snowboarder Mitchell Brown, added another trophy to their cabinets on Friday at the Coca Cola Cardrona Games, after winning the double halfpipe competition in their disciplines. Winter Olympian snowboarder Juliane Bray, also of Wanaka, and Australian free skier Janina Kuzma took the titles for the women´s events. Each athlete won $2500 cash. Wells (16) is currently New Zealand´s number one freestyle skier, and his performance today reaffirmed his top status. He impressed judges with a smooth overall performance, completing back to back rotations, including a 900 (two and a half rotations) in the Johnny Superpipe. Brown (19), also a Kiwi Winter Olympian, won his event by performing a variety of spins, tricks and inverts, including a 720 (two full rotations) and a 900. Both Bray and Kuzma achieved huge air with a variety of rotations.
Cardrona Games´ halfpipe competition is completely unique. Park designers have created the world´s first double halfpipe, consisting of the 150m long Johnny Superpipe, followed by a 10m connecting hip jump, then onto the 120m long International Halfpipe. Both Wells and Brown said they were impressed with the conditions of the pipes: "The halfpipes were great, they were cut really well. I´ve never seen any competition like this before, so it was pretty cool. I was quite tired by the end of it though, because it is so long," Wells said. Huge crowds gathered again yesterday afternoon to watch American Chris Brown perform his 21m step up jump on a snowmobile, as well as clearing a huge step up road gap jump, taking off by the Noodle Bar area, roaring past the crowd, up a steep jump, over a track and landing on top of a steep incline. Moto FMX riders also performed daredevil like stunts, taking off a second after the snowmobile and crossing over in the air, immediately behind them.
The crowd was just going off. The performances were huge, and it´s great that people can see so many exciting snow sports displays. It´s particularly special that Cardrona Alpine Resort is the first mountain in New Zealand to host the snowmobiling and FMX big air demonstrations.
The Coca Cola Cardrona Games concludes Sunday (due to poor visibility on Saturday) with the technical slopestyle event. Snowmobile and Moto FMX big air demonstrations take place at the end of each day´s competition, with Salmonella Dub DJ Sound System also playing live each day.

US Winter Olympian and X-Games gold medallist Nate Holland today won the men´s snowboarding Gravity X event at the inaugural Coca-Cola Cardrona Games, while Wanaka´s own Winter Olympian Juliane Bray won the women´s event.
In the ski category of the Gravity X, Canadian Winter Olympian Trennon Paynter took the men´s title while Australia´s Janina Kuzma won the event for the women. Gravity X is an exciting, high-speed race amongst skiers and snowboarders, who push their skills to get to the bottom of the course with the fastest time. About 50 riders took on the course at Cardrona Alpine Resort, which consisted of a series of rolls, continuous bank-roll combinations, flat hip jumps, finishing with a massive step-down road gap jump.
Conditions were ideal for the Gravity X event, which signalled the beginning of the three-day Cardrona Games. Holland said he was pleased with his consistent, smooth runs during the competition: "It was a great course, it flowed really well and it was rhythmical."

USSA News
USSA DIRECTOR OF EDUCATIONAL SERVICES ELECTED PRESIDENT OF NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR ACCREDITATION OF COACHING EDUCATION (NCACE) FOR 2007
PARK CITY, Utah (Sept. 5) - USSA Director of Educational Services David McCann was named president-elect of the National Council for Accreditation of Coaching Education (NCACE) at its conference in East Lansing, Mich., earlier this summer. McCann has been USSA Educational Services Director for three years, prior to which he was the associate director of the American Sport Education Program. He will take over as NCACE president at next year's conference in Indianapolis, Ind.

"NCACE is the best opportunity we have to promote quality-coaching education to more sports organizations and universities," said McCann. "NCACE has developed a body of knowledge that programs can use as a foundation on which to develop and improve their coaches education programs. The National Association for Sport & Physical Education (NASPE) Standards for Sports Coaches and the NCACE accreditation process are the key elements needed to help us ‘professionalize' sport coaching."

NCACE's mission is to support qualified coaches through programs that provide quality education. The essential function of the council is to review the quality of coaching education programs and encourage their continuous improvement. NCACE endorses national standards for coaches that facilitate the certification, evaluation and selection of coaches. In addition, the council oversees the development of new educational elements and guidelines for reviewing existing coaches education programs. NCACE reviews coaching education/certification programs that seek accreditation. Reviews are based on the program's compliance with NCACE Guidelines for Coaching Education and the NASPE National Standards for Sport Coaches.

Cathy Sellers, USOC manager of coaching, noted, "David McCann's election as the next president of NCACE shows the respect and dedication of the national governing body of Coach Educators and the efforts that they make to improve coaching in the United States. Dave's efforts at USSA epitomize the development of quality programs and instruction."
The conference attracted more than 100 attendees representing universities, national governing bodies, youth sport organizations and high school associations as well the USOC and National Federation of State High School Associations. Featured speakers included Ron Mason, Michigan State University athletic director; Dan Varner, CEO of Think Detroit/PAL; and Jack Roberts, executive director Michigan High School Athletic Association. Discussions and workshops were aimed at providing coach educators with information and tools that they can use in their programs.
