East Ridge Summit Chair and More Lift Capacity This winter skiers and riders will be able to access Rendezvous Bowl, Corbet’s Couloir and the backcountry gates via the Bridger Gondola and a series of chairlifts including the new East Ridge Chair. The East Ridge Chair will rise 600 vertical feet from the top of the Sublette Chairlift to just below Corbet’s Cabin. This temporary double chairlift will take skiers and snowboarders up Rendezvous Bowl this winter and until a permanent tram replacement lift is installed. At this time, the chair will be recycled into a different location at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. In addition to construction of the East Ridge Chair, JHMR is adding capacity to the Bridger Gondola and Thunder Chair to ensure seamless mountain access next winter. The Bridger Gondola will have 18 more cabins and Thunder Chair will have 16 more chairs added. From the base, the Gondola will now offer an uphill capacity of 2400 skiers per hour (vs. 1800 previously) - this increase alone will be double the uphill capacity per hour of the tram! Sugarloaf
Carrabassett Valley and Newry, Maine (Nov. 14, 2006) – Sugarloaf/USA and Sunday River, the two largest ski resorts in Maine, have jointly chosen to offset 100 percent of their resort operations’ electricity usage with energy generated from wind. Together the resorts are now the largest purchaser and consumer of wind power in New England . Under the new plan, electricity generated from wind will be used to offset power use at all resort base lodges, offices, ski lifts, energy-intensive snowmaking operations and three Grand Resort Hotel and Conference Centers. The two resorts are purchasing 30 million kilowatt hours of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from Constellation NewEnergy to achieve this goal. A Green-e certified REC entitles the owner to one megawatt hour of power produced by a green power generator. One certified REC has the environmental impact of indirectly reducing the emissions associated with one megawatt hour of electricity produced by a fossil fuel generator.
Based on a national average utility emissions rate, fulfilling the two resorts’ electricity needs with zero-emission, non fossil fuel sources will keep more than 41 million pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. That amount is equivalent to avoiding the C02 emissions produced by 3,600 passenger cars each year and is the same amount of electricity needed to power more than 2,500 average American homes annually. This purchase of wind energy qualifies Sugarloaf and Sunday River to the EPA’s Green Power Leadership Club and supports continuing development of renewable energy sources nationwide About Sugarloaf/USA:
Located in Carrabassett Valley , Maine , Sugarloaf/USA is recognized among the top ski and golf resorts in the world. Sugarloaf/USA is part of the American Skiing Company family of resorts. Its resorts include Killington and Mount Snow in Vermont ; Sunday River and Sugarloaf/USA in Maine ; Attitash in New Hampshire ; Steamboat in Colorado ; and The Canyons in Utah . www.sugarloaf.com

Grouse Mountain - Canada

Photo Grouse Mountain

40cm of snow has fallen in the past 48 hrs. Our total snowfall is now 90cm! The Grouse Grind Trail is located in North Vancouver, B.C., at the base of the Grouse Mountain Resort ski area. It is an extremely steep and mountainous trail that begins at the 300-metre-elevation and climbs to 1,100 metres over a distance of approximately 2.9 kilometres.
Hiking times vary considerably depending on each hiker's individual fitness level. The Grouse Grind hike is difficult and those planning on climbing the trail should be in excellent physical condition. Those individuals with any health concerns including high blood pressure, heart and breathing problems are warned not to attempt to hike the trail. Hikers should always be personally prepared before setting out on the Grouse Grind. As a minimum, you should leave a hiking plan with a friend, never hike alone, and carry adequate water, food, warm clothing and a cellphone.
Ensure that you leave yourself enough time to complete your hike before the onset of darkness. Hiking the Grouse Grind Trail in darkness can be extremely hazardous and results in many lost hikers each season.
