AROSA, Switzerland (Jan. 17) - For the second consecutive day Stacia Hookom (Edwards, CO) led U.S. Snowboarding riders, finishing eighth in parallel slalom to close the alpine portion of the 2007 FIS Snowboard World Championships. For Hookom, it was the final race of a successful career that spanned 12 seasons and seven World Championships with U.S. Snowboarding. Adam Smith (Bend, OR) and Justin Reiter (Steamboat Springs, CO) led American men finishing 12th and 13th respectively.
"It's really tough and I'm going to miss it," said Hookom, holding back tears. "My motto for the Worlds was 'what would Elway do.' John Elway closed out his career with the Denver Broncos on top and today I was wearing bib number seven - his number. Maybe I didn't win, but I feel like I went out on top." As the first female to be named to the U.S. Snowboarding program following the 1994 U.S. championships, Hookom has racked up 197 World Cup starts over four disciplines (giant slalom, parallel giant slalom, parallel slalom and halfpipe), was a member of seven World Championships teams, captured six national championships and now ends a storied career with her best World Championships performance finishing fifth in PGS and eighth in PSL.
"One of my biggest dreams was to win a World Championships medal," she said. "It's something I've always held an extreme amorous for and it didn't happen, so that's hard. But I'm not disappointed in the way I raced - I'd rather have real races than have someone crash for me to move on and all of my races this entire week were tough battles. If only every weekend could be like the Worlds." In the first round of finals, Hookom, who qualified 15th out sped Olympic and Worlds PGS silver medalist Amelie Kober of Germany before coming up short against Nicolien Sauerbreij of the Netherlands by just over four tenths of a second in the round of eight. Sauerbreij would move on to finish fourth behind winner Heidi Nuerurer of Austria, while the men's race was won by Olympic silver medalist and fellow Austrian Simon Schoch.
"She was really ripping. I have a lot of respect for Stacey, she and I were originally named to the first U.S. Snowboarding Team together after the '94 nationals," said Head Coach Steve Persons, who was a competitive rider before moving into coaching. "She's proved a lot this week and left quite an impression on our younger riders. Her determination is something that everyone can look on with admiration. She should be proud of what she's accomplished." One such young rider is Reiter, who along with Smith was edged in the first round of finals by a very narrow margin. Smith, who would finish 12th overall, was bumped by newly crowned PGS World Champion Rok Flander of Slovenia, the eventual bronze medalist and Reiter dropped to Mathieu Bozzetto of France by just .16 tenths of a second.
"Every run for Adam and Justin was almost a tie," said Persons, "they couldn't have been more than a tenth out each time, but both of them qualified near the back of the pack, so they had to beat the faster guys in the early rounds, which is a tough road to go. But I'm really happy with what I saw in this team over the last few days. We had multiple riders in the finals each day and with a little tweaking here and there, this team will be on the podium regularly. Hopefully this will bring us confindence as we move back into the World Cup tour." The 2007 FIS World Snowboard Championships continue Friday with men's big air before concluding Saturday with men's and women's halfpipe. For the alpine riders, the World Cup schedule resumes on Sunday, Jan. 28 in Nendaz, Switzerland.

Masterpiece in Motion (MIM) continues its hunt for the best original snowboard and skateboard art in the world, with a worldwide call for submissions. Artists have until March 16 2007 to submit their original visual art and graphic designs for snowboard and skateboard canvasses. 30 finalists will have their designs showcased at the ten day TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival, putting the most fresh innovative street art directly before a tidal wave of street-savvy viewers. In 2006, the exposure launched MIM finalist Zak Wilson towards commercial success. When Togo’s Sandwich shops of California ran a promo based on Snowboard Art, they hooked up with Wilson, and commissioned him to produce a series of designs that became part of a winterlong traveling roadshow that hits North and SoCal skateparks, Rail Jams, gear shops, sweet surf breaks and will be at Snow Summit/Bear Mountain and Sierra Summit throughout January and February. The 2007 Masterpiece in Motion Champion will walk away with US$1000, an Ascension snowboard featuring their winning art, and the opportunity to work with Ascension Snowboards to develop a line of boards featuring their Snowboard Art. The top three winners, as chosen by a jury of industry leaders, will take home a cash purse, and the top 3 honourable mentions will receive Original Snowboard Art Top Skin(™). 33rd BUD LIGHT COWBOY DOWNHILL
ROLLED THROUGH STEAMBOAT TODAY

Nearly 60 ProRodeo Cowboys Competed in the World's Most Unique Ski Rodeo

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO--January 16, 2007--Nearly 60 Professional rodeo cowboys and cowgirls from around the United States, Canada, Australia and France switched from riding broncs and bulls to skis and snowboards today as they competed in the 33rd Annual Bud Light Cowboy Downhill in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

The race began with the dual slalom where cowboys raced their way down a slalom course and over a large jump, which bucked a few right out of their equipment. Once through the course, each had to lasso a Denver Bronco's cheerleader, saddle a horse, and cross the finish line, hopefully all in one piece.

Ray Thurston (Bib #40), a bull rider from Tabernash, CO, won the dual slalom event with a time of 30.43 seconds. Evan Jayne (Bib #2), a bare back rider from Marseille, France, took second place with a time of 32.25 seconds. Third place went to Jed Moore (Bib #99) of Cheyenne, WY with a time of 34.62 seconds.

The finale and most entertaining aspect of today's 33rd Bud Light Cowboy Downhill competition, was the Stampede. Utilizing a mass start, the Stampede pitted cowboy against cowboy in a chaotic winner takes all race to the bottom of the course.

Bare Back rider, Scott Montague (Bib #82) of Rapid City, South Dakota took the coveted Stampede title. Joe Gunderson (Bib #5) a Bare Back rider from White, South Dakota took the prestigious title of best wreck for a head over heels tumble.

9. Jake Littlefield (#15), West Point, MS 42.15
10. Clint Cannon (#41), Waller, TX 42.68

It all began 33 years ago when Billy Kidd, Steamboat's Director of Skiing, and Larry Mahan, six-time All-Around World Champion cowboy, decided to invite a few of the ProRodeo stars to Steamboat for a day of skiing. Three decades later, the Bud Light Cowboy Downhill has become one of the most popular and unique ski rodeos in North America featuring cowboys from ProRodeo World Champions and first-timers on skis.

The Bud Light Cowboy Downhill is always scheduled to coincide with the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver each January. Racers must be entered at the Stock Show and be a member of the ProRodeo Cowboys Association or the Professional Bull Riders to compete in the event.
