Last Minute Team Changes for Oakley Jib-Vid 2009

Just one week from now teams will be arriving in Mayrhofen for the start of the Oakley Jib-Vid 2009. The Jib-Vid crew are heading out this weekend to make sure everything is set for what promises to be the biggest and best Jib-Vid yet. Last week; the final list of 18 teams was announced; however since then there has been a number of changes; meaning that the reserve list teams were contacted, and received the news that they had been hoping for; they were in the Oakley Jib-Vid 2009.

The "Cheeseburgers" team's Tobias Strauss was called away to the US; meaning the super-eager Whitespace Crew of Will Bradshaw, William Tarbet and Jon Addison will be competing instead. This was great news for Will Bradshaw who was lined up to compete in 2008 but was forced to pull out at the last minute with a broken hand.

Mayrhofen locals the Dalikfodda team now replace the Appertrue team who suffered a spate of injuries, Erik Nygard, Andreas Jakobsson and Andreas Wengelin were the first team to apply this year; but will now be replaced by Billy Neilson, Mark Ruparelia and Richard Hookes.

Finally, Lockdown Projects team suffered a setback when Scott McMorris was injured at the weekend riding the huge Vans Penken Park setup at the Wangl Tangl; meaning for the first time ever there will be no Lockdown team; instead standby veterans APO Snowboards take their place with David Englhardt, Florian Hasenauer and Sean Balmer.

White Pass Film Festival Saturday April 11th!
LIFT-SERVED TERRAIN will operate daily through 4/12. We will then move to weekend operation (Saturday & Sunday only) through 4/26. There is a chance we will operate the first weekend in May

After twenty-four years of planning, the path is now clear for the development of an additional 767 acres at White Pass. On September 9th, 2008 United States District Court Judge James Robart ruled in favor of the United States Forest Service (USFS) and the White Pass Company denying the Sierra Club's and Hogback Basin Preservation Association's appeal. USFS and White Pass' arguments "carried the day" on all counts deliberated. While Judge Robart's decision was open for appeal to the 9th Circuit Court, none were filed. General Manager Kevin McCarthy commented, "Appropriately, on Armistice Day, November 11th, we determined through no appeal by the plaintiffs, that the legal battle over the expansion of White Pass Ski Area came to an end. The company can now proceed with construction. This is a day we have been looking forward to for decades, and is a testament to believing in one's cause and never allowing what is right from being derailed by obstacles".

Construction will include two chairlifts, a mid-mountain lodge and 13 named runs in the open sub-alpine basins of the expansion area

FERNIE

Fernie Alpine Resort held an impromptu press conference to help satisfy the peaked curiosities and settle the flying questions about the upcoming 1st Annual Fernival event. Since the first event announcement, people have been mystified by SN-O-BAMA and where Spirit of the West fits into it all? After much speculation about what it all could mean, Fernie Alpine Resort provides solid answers that hope to bring some calm to the Fernival fever that has taken aflame since the first mention of this new and enigmatic event. And though the press conference drew in few, for the amazing snow at the resort kept everyone out skiing, the critical Q & A session was documented and goes as follows:
Q: What is Fernival and when is it?
A: Fernival is the name of Fernie Alpine Resort's brand new ANNUAL SPRING CELEBRATION. The name is a play on "Fernie" with the word "festival". We wanted the name to not only reflect the wonderful resort location but also stand the test of time. With the bonus weekend planned on Saturday April 18-19th, we thought it would be a climactic way to end the season with this festive event.

Q: What is all this talk about "SN-O-BAMA" and skiing in jeans?
A: SN-O-BAMA is the chosen theme for the 1st Annual Fernival event. Again, the name is a play on words, putting "snow" together with "bama" which in urban lingo means: crazy, outrageous, and odd. Though the name has a coincidental reference to a certain current political figure, let it be known that Fernie Alpine Resort has no plan to nationalize the ski industry nor campaign political views throughout Fernival. Despite the connotation, we felt that it was no time to bail out on some good creativity and pushed forward with the theme believing that it truly describes the unique experience that Fernival promises to give. Recognizing a need for change, we felt "SN-O-BAMA" was an original and deserving homage to SNOW. And since "bama" has urban roots to mean slightly unstylish, we added in the throw-back reference to skiing in jeans taking this event back to the good ol' times when we had fun and skied! We encourage you all to wear your jeans and ski too - Yes, you can! All in all, we knew the name would create some stimulus in the populations and we are glad that it got your attention. Come and get SN-O-BAMA with us! WWW.skifernie.com

Coolzone Winterplex Still Moving Forward Plans for the Coolzone Winterplex in Texas, first announced a year ago, are still progressing with backers, The Bearfire Group, aiming to commence construction by the end of the year with the facility likely to open in late next year. The Bearfire Group is raising $375m for the Coolzone Winterplex within the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Possible sites being considered are reported to include a 527 acre location formerly owned by Intel. The Coolzone Winterplex’s main attraction will feature a 20-story outdoor ski and snowboard mountain which will be surfaced with Briton Engineering Developments’ Snowflex surface. The mountain will be complete with hotels, retaiuling, restaurants and chair lifts, a snowboard park with competition half pipe, toboggans and snow tubing. In addition to catering to extreme sports enthusiasts, the park will also feature activities for the entire family including two ice rinks, an outdoor ice trail, a winter wonderland for children with snow, an outdoor concert venue, rock climbing and rides. The project calls for more than 60 acres of attractions. Bearfire Group is also in discussions with a major motion picture studio to use their intellectual property to theme a portion of the park. By populating the park environment with identifiable characters, the Coolzone Winterplex will attract families as well as sports enthusiasts. The intellectual property will be highlighted by rides and entertainment. Additional family attractions include educational components and an opportunity to play in the park’s Winter Wonderland. http://coolzonewinterplex.com
