Snow Alert, - Alyeska Resort

***
ASPEN, Colo. (Jan. 28) - Steve Fisher (Breckenridge, CO) unloaded a huge first run and stomped it clean Sunday to win his second X Games gold medal in halfpipe, halting Olympic gold medalist Shaun White's (Carlsbad, CA) chance of capturing a record seventh Winter X gold medal. The 2004 X champion and U.S. Snowboarding rider became only the third to accomplish double gold in halfpipe joining 1998 Olympian Todd Richards ('97,'00) and White ('03,'05).
"It's pretty ridiculous, my head is still spinning," said Fisher, who also won on his first run score in '04. "It was just like last time and my nerves were killing me. I knew that my score was probably good enough for a top three, but it held." In the best of three format, the 2004 X Games champion's 92.00 point first run topped White's second run score of 91.00, while 2006 Olympian Mason Aguirre (Mammoth Lakes, CA) held on for third with 90.66.
Showdown Set After qualifying second for the 10-man final behind White on Saturday night, Fisher boosted three different runs on Sunday, each towering well over the thousands that lined the 550-foot Aspen pipe. The judges choice rolled out like this: huge frontside air, backside 540, frontside 1080, cab 720, enormous frontside 900 and closed with a crippler 720. The run was good enough for Richards, who was doing live TV commentary, to predict Fisher for the podium.
After falling on his second run and accidentally drifting his first straight air on the final run into a frontside 360, he then waited for White. "I will say, this is all pretty nerve wracking," he said at the base of the pipe after the final run. "That didn't quite go as planned - I started to go backwards on the first hit and I was like, 'what now.'" Yet he stomped that too. Then as White slid out while landing what is normally a routine mctwist, Fisher knew it was a lock. "That was insane, when he sketched, I knew it was in the bag, but I had to wait for the judges," who awarded White 88.00 points and Fisher the gold.
"Fisher was just way bigger than everyone else and he stomped everything clean, there was no doubt about his victory," said Head Coach Mike Jankowski. "He's been working so hard to get his riding back to where it should be and he proved that tonight."
Next up is the second stop of the Chevorlet U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix set for Feb. 2-4 at Mt. Bachelor, Oregon, featuring halfpipe and slopsetyle competitions.

2007 U.S ALPINE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP merchandise is now available in any of our retail shops located at The Hotel Alyeska. Come wear what the Pros are wearing with the latest in tee-shirts and hoodies. The Championships take place March 27 - April 3 at Alyeska Resort. For the more information and the latest events schedule visit U.S Alpine National Championships.

The U.S. Alpine Championships return to the slopes of Alyeska this spring, March 27 - April 3. The 2007 races will feature the country's best athletes, including Olympic gold medal winners Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) and Julia Mancuso (Olympic Valley, CA), along with other members of the 2006 U.S. Olympic Team and hopefully newly-crowned FIS World Champions. Alyeska Resort first hosted the U.S. Alpine Championships 26 years ago, in 1981, and most recently in 2004. It was at the '81 championships that Phil Mahre, fresh off winning his first overall World Cup Title, won the U.S. giant slalom title, while brother Steve won the Slalom. In 1989, Alyeska played host to the Junior World Alpine Championships where the U.S. team captured eight medals, including gold in super G and combined by Alaska racer Tommy Moe. The U.S. Alpine Championships are considered a right of passage for many young racers who are hungry for the opportunity to ski in front of the national coaching staff and at the highest level of domestic ski racing. The championships match the best U.S. Ski Team athletes with hundreds of aspiring American skiers looking to measure themselves against world-class racers as they aim for spots on the U.S. Ski Team.

SAN SICARIO
Italy (Jan. 28) - Lindsey Kildow (Vail, CO) led all the way Saturday to win her third World Cup race of the season, a super G, as she conquered the Olympic speed run where she crashed last year. Julia Mancuso (Olympic Valley, CA) was eighth. "I 'finished business' here," Kildow said. WCSN.com will broadcast same-day video streaming at 4 p.m. ET.
Kildow, who was second Friday in the first of two super Gs on the Olympic speed track, had a winning time of 1:30.06 with World Cup leader Renate Goetschl of Austria - who won Friday and then Saturday in downhill - finishing second in 1:30.23. Kildow previously won downhills in Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies and Val d Isere, France. Mancuso finished the 2.3K Fraiteve Olympique course in 1:31.08. Kirsten Clark (Raymond, ME) tied for 15th and Kaylin Richardson (Edina, MN) was 18th. Libby Ludlow (Bellevue, WA) was 23rd and Stacey Cook (Mammoth Mountain, CA) 32nd in the final women's race before the World Alpine Ski Championships start Saturday in Are, Sweden. Rocket Rossis lead to another Kildow win "It was sweet, just an awesome day and obviously I'm very happy," Kildow said. "It was a pretty different course from Friday, but it had a really good rhythm. It was a little more technical, more turny, but it flowed really well from top to bottom. It was a fun course in perfect weather...and obviously, my Rossingols were fast...
Kildow had a nasty crash during downhill training last February on the San Sicario course and was hospitalized overnight. A pre-race medal pick by some, she returned to race but her top result was seventh in super G, propelling her to win the U.S. Olympic Spirit Award. The honor was designated by American fans, fellow Team USA athletes, U.S. alumni Olympians and members of the media for best representing the Olympic Spirit during the 2006 Winter Games. "I 'finished business' here. I'm on an even score with the hill. I knew I could have done it last year but with the crash it didn't work out in my favor. I'm happy to get that score settled. And [Goetschl] has been unstoppable the last couple of days, so this is definitely a good end to things here." The win, her seventh overall and second in SG, broke a tie with another Vail resident, Hall of Famer Cindy Nelson, and moved Kildow into third place behind Tamara McKinney (18) and Picabo Street (nine) in the U.S. list of women World Cup winners.
The head coach is smiling Head Coach Patrick Riml said, "It was very impressive...and obviously what Lindsey did again was awesome. One on the top, two in the top 10, four in the top 20, five in the top 30 - and Stacey skiing well, but just outside the points.
"She had a little mistake coming into the flat [midway] but then she kept it clean; she was ahead at the top but a little behind Goetschl on the second split - seven-hundredths back, but then Lindsey took off on the bottom and Goetschl couldn't catch her. Lindsey had more speed...and it was just awesome.
"Julia did another great job, too, but this course isn't good for her - it's so flat - but she's skiing so well, like Lindsey. What she's done this month is sensational. They're both skiing so hot. And 'Clarky' kept everything together today and attacked all the way, so this was a nice, small comeback for her...Kaylin tweaked her back but I don't think it's anything to worry about - and she put down another strong speed result...and Libby and Stacey were good at the top. They all stuck with the plan, and they know they're skiing well as we go to Worlds." The women will catch some downtime at their European base in Kirchberg, Austria, and then head to Worlds where the first women's race in Are will be super G next Sunday.

Sugarloaf
Riding the chairlift to Sugarloaf's summit not only takes you up, it takes you to a higher plane. The dense forest of lower elevations quickly gives way to trees and shrubs in miniature, caked with snow, and even they vanish as you crest the summit, 4,237 feet into the sky. And that's just the trip UP. Think of what's in store when you come down!
The Front Face Snowfields are open and buried in snow. White Nitro is buried and offers the kind of thrill that you'll only find at Sugarloaf. The summit experience is something every skier and rider should see for themselves and with terrain for all abilities, it is within your reach. But don't take my word for it.
With 40 miles of open terrain, bountiful natural snow, and the only lift serviced, above treeline skiing in the East what's not to love.
This is what winter is all about.
Snow, Snowfields, Samples, Strangefolk, and Savings!
Today's letter of the day is 'S'. The decision to get here this weekend should be elementary too. We've got tons of snow (2 feet in 2 weeks), snowmaking has been relentless, the Front Face Snowfields are open, and we've got the Samples and Strangefolk in concert on Saturday. Join us this weekend for as little as $89 per person, per night. Plus we even have a few units available for one night stays. Call 1.800 THE LOAF.

Mad River Glen
We picked up about 3-4" of fluff yesterday , you have to love the "lake effect" snows. While there might not be snow where you are the skiing at Mad River Glen is really good and with shots for new snow over the next few days things could get even better and more reasonable temps will be on tap for the weekend. We will have 100% (or darn close to it) of our legendary terrain open for the weekend. Be sure to check out the latest weather prognostications from MRG weather guru, Josh Fox. We are currently providing skiers very pleasurable skiing with a nice, relatively soft packed powder surface. Powder can also be found in the nooks and crannies and along the edges. While there are thin spots in the typical places the base on the upper reaches of the mountain is good, while the bottom has been fortified by the recent snow and our vaunted snow making system which has been running at 100% (yup, both guns have been blazing!). Winter has finally arrived and boy do you folks deserve it after the rough start to the year. Jr Mogul - Feb 3
The Mad River Glen Junior Mogul Challenge has been re-scheduled for Saturday February 3rd. Mad River Glen will be selecting its Sports Illustrated for Kids NextSnow Team based on the results of the Challenge along with their written response to an essay question. The essay must be handed in by Friday February 9th. The first place finisher will receive a paid trip (along with a parent) to Sports Illustrated for Kids Next Snow Search at Killington on March 2-4, 2007. Last season the Mad River Glen NextSnow Team included; Caroline Dillon from Waitsfield, Vermont, Cole Derrick from North Fayston, Vermont, and Peter Holtan from Brooklyn, New York . Sports Illustrated for Kids NextSnow Search is the first all-mountain, all equipment, all kids snow sports championship. It’s not just a competition; style, attitude, and personality are also factors.
Chair(s) for sale
When the historic restoration of the Single Chair begins in the spring of 2007 skiers will have a unique opportunity to purchase the old chairs and acquire a link to skiing history. The sale of the chairs is an important component of the financing of the project. There will be three ways to obtain a chair. One hundred and forty will be auctioned off to the Co-op shareholders. Five chairs will be raffled off and an additional three will be offered in a special essay contest. The raffle and the essay contest will be open to the public. If there are any chairs remaining they will be auctioned off to the highest bidder.

Mammoth Mountain
A lot of the Mammoth Faithful, many of my friends included, are still holding out for the big dump of the season. While I personally can't wait to wake up one morning to 3 feet of soft, fresh powder either, the season is starting to slip away. January is rapidly coming to a close, which means we are in mid-season! A couple weeks ago, I was counting up my days on the Mountain since two months had officially passed. I realized I had only ridden 16 days. A lot for some people you might say, but not for someone who lives in Mammoth and works on the Mountain. I realized I hadn't been going out more because I was getting caught up in the same mentality as everyone else. I kept saying to myself, "I'll ride more when we get more snow." At that point I made a resolution, albeit two weeks late but still a resolution. I resolved to ride as much as possible regardless of snow and in the past two weeks I have been out nearly every day almost doubling my season total. Take it from someone who is out there, the snow is really fun! I couldn't believe how nice it was even yesterday from Saddle Bowl down to Patrolmen's. Come up and hone your skills in the Park! Take a lesson and really concentrate on your form. That way, when the big dump does hit, you'll be ready. We have a 36 to 48 inch base of packed powder and machine-groomed snow. We are expecting to operate all lifts with the exception of Chairs 7, 9, 13, 14, 20, 25, and 26. Ski Patrol is closing Chair 9 and the Gold Hill area for the day in order to do some cat work. Lifts are wind and weather permitting, so please check back for updates.Hopefully I'll see you on the slopes sooner rather than later!Photo: Snow Cats pushing the 22-foot Super Duper PipeCourtesy: Tyler Lassiter
