Ligety Rips to 4th in Super Combined
Moves up 14 places in slalom

REITERALM, Austria (Dec. 10) - Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) turned in the second-fastest slalom run Sunday and moved up 14 places to tie for fourth in a super combined won by slalom world champion Ivica Kostelic of Croatia. Steve Nyman (Provo, UT) was 15th and Bode Miller (Bretton Woods, NH) skied out in the super G portion.
The race was moved from Val d Isere, France, because of poor snow conditions. It mixed a super G and one run of slalom. Kostelic finished in a total time of 2:08.90 with Ligety, 23rd in the super G, tied for fourth with Swede Hans Olsson at 2:10.44 as the World Cup schedule resumed after relocation from snow-starved Val d Isere, France.
"My super G was pretty good - and it was a rugged super G - but my slalom's still a work in progress," Ligety said, referring to a broken right hand, which is healing and getting stronger, "but I'm happy. The super G was bumpy, for sure.
"There was a little bit of snow and it made the frozen snow underneath; pretty rotten. It was bumpy and hard to get an edge in the super G but the slalom had better conditions than I thought they'd be. It held up pretty well." He added, "The super G was definitely gnarly. We had light snow through the race and it was overcast, so the light was a little tough, but I'm happy. I hope to get a couple of more races and have some more good results." Nyman's two-run time was 2:11.25 while Jimmy Cochran (Keene, NH), moving beyond his normal gate-running routine this season, started 70th, moved up to 50th in the super G and finished 31st, one-hundredth of a second away from World Cup points.
"Ted did a really good job again. He was so close to the podium and that's very encouraging," Head Coach Phil McNichol said. "And Nyman had a few bobbles in super G or he'd have been higher." The overnight snow, mixed with some rain created tricky conditions, he said, "and if you got off-line, if you went off course just a bit, you'd get into some of that soft snow and the conditions became very variable...and that's what happened with Bode. He was doing well - he had the fastest time at the top, but he got off a bit, he went to his inside ski and put his hand down and bounced into some of that soft snow and he just couldn't get out.
"This isn't a hard course, but that makes it even more challenging because if you have a mistake there's no place to make up time. So, if you get off-line, it can really cost you." The men's schedule resumes Friday and Saturday in Italy with the traditional downhill and super G in Val Gardena, Italy, followed by a giant slalom and slalom next Sunday and Monday in nearby Alta Badia, Italy.

Today the Bridger Gondola and Casper Triple open to the public. I had the opportunity to ride up there yesterday to check things out - for those of you who have been here during previous seasons you are in for a surprise. Construction on our new restaurant progresses and the lift shack has moved. The groomers and snowmakers have been working around the clock to prepare the slopes, and they've done an excellent job. Early season conditions do still exist so ski or ride with care. -

World Cup Freestyle - Jilin Beida Lake, China

Photo: Andy Walshe/USSA

JILIN BEIDA LAKE, China (Dec. 9) - Olympian Ryan St. Onge (Steamboat Springs, CO) won the opening aerials meet of the World Cup season Saturday as the freestyle schedule finally got underway in China. Former World Cup champion Jeret "Speedy" Peterson (Boise, ID) finished sixth.
St. Onge, who has won two World Cup contests in each of the last two seasons, took the first-round lead with a full, double-full, full - quad-twisting triple jump [four twists, three flips] - and then clinched the victory with a lay, double-full, full, full, a different quad-twisting triple, for 242.34 points. Han Xiaopeng of China was second at 239.72.
"I like this yellow [leader's] bib. I've never worn it and I'm thinking of hanging onto it for a while," St. Onge said. "I'm pretty happy with this start for the season."
St. Onge, who worked with private coach Todd Ossian after consulting with Aerials Head Coach Matt Christensen, said, "I've been trying to focus on my skills and make sure every jump goes as it should, and trying especially to work on my takeoff because if it goes well, everything else will follow. It worked out well and I even got to train a little more today... "The whole summer I thought it was gonna work, and then I knew it was going to work, but my first couple of days on snow I wasn't as sure any more," St. Onge said.
"But that was just the first week on snow [during training at Apex Ski Area in Canada] and there was kind of a rush to get things up and going, so my jumping didn't go as I hoped it would. But I fixed a couple of things and transferred all of it to this week, a step by step progression...and today was awesome," he said. "And I think there were a few people who doubted ‘Speedy' could take some time off and come back, but I knew from the beginning he'd be fine. He's got so much heart, and he loves jumping, and I knew he'd keep coming...and today he was awesome. He's going to be one of the guys to beat again this year, I know it."
"We've had good conditions all week although one day was very, very cold," Aerials Head Coach Matt Christensen said. "They both jumped great. I'm really impressed with how quickly ‘Speedy' has gotten up to speed, but he's stuck to a plan we put together a month ago and he looks great...and obviously Ryan's on it." National favorite Nina Li won the women's event with 195.10 points and Chinese aerialists swept the top four places. No U.S. women competed.
The weekend - which became the opening weekend for the freestyle season after poor snow conditions forced cancellation of the traditional opening events Sept. 2-3 at Mount Buller, Australia - continues Sunday with another aerials meet.
