Saddly I report, that Squaw had been getting hammered with a series of storms, finally building a late but monster spring base. Unfortunately on Wednesday morning, a member of the avalanche crew safety checking some fairly steep terrain at el 8200'was killed by a avalanche.

Cold snow, a layer of rain , snow, old snow and rain led to a unstable fracture.

I did not know Andrew personally, but have seen his glowing round face for many years.
It is horrible to hear of anyone hurt or killed while engaged in whatever their favorite sport or pastime is. It is sobering when it is in your own backyard. Squaw is my home on the hill. Andrew will be missed by many, in Sv corp. or his fellow SV patrollers.

Alpine Meadows, Sugar Bowl & Squaw Valley Lake Tahoe Resorts, all have avalanche awareness and training classes
A reminder Know before you go. A SINCERE thanks to all the patrollersEVERYWHERE that lay it on the line, so we can Thrive ! !

The first stages of the Nissan Tram Face Squaw Valley USA took place today on the impressive Silverado face with excellent conditions. The 53 riders qualified for the only North American stage of the Freeride World Tour amazed the crowd under the California sun. Before launching the second day of competition on the mythical Tram Face at the beginning of the week, the athletes and organizers are anxiously awaiting the snowfall predicted this weekend: everything will then be perfect to mark a page in the history of freeride.
