An annual tradition with deep rooted history, this event is for amateur racing enthusiasts as well as first timers in a race course. This season will be the 43rd annual citizen’s downhill at Crystal Mountain, the only original event conceived and still going since Crystal Mountain’s first season of operation.
Downhill racing gates are set from top to bottom on Quicksilver for a fun day of racing through a creatively designed and groomed course. All competitors get one (1) full-on practice run and two (2) timed runs. To keep it simple, the fastest time wins!
Each year men and women participants from past downhill’s return again , some with their kids to participate and keep the tradition alive. Competitors new and old discover the thrill of speed... Advanced intermediate skier’s will have as much fun as the amateur racing enthusiasts who will let it rip!
Register in the Base Lodge from 7:30-10:00am for $30.00. Cash Prizes will be awarded in all competition classes.
April 16th Dummy Downhill (benefiting the Crystal Mountain Fire Department) Open the gate to high flying, speed demons of every shape and size on Saturday April 15th, but with a catch... no entries may have a pulse! This is no joke! Witness and participate in the 1st Annual Dummy Downhill at Crystal Mountain WA, where creations of all sizes, shapes, and most of all, pure lunacy, compete for the best possible runs down Dummy Downhill (a new run between Lower Bull and Lower Exterminator outside the base lodge patio).

Dummy Teams (up to 4 people max) build dummies attached to skis or snowboards and then send them down a groomed trough to launch off a huge jump into a crash pit! Enter a dummy of your own or just come and watch...
This event is open to the public, Crystal Mountain employees and management. A $50.00 donation fee per Dummy Team (up to 4 people max) will go to benefit the Crystal Mountain Fire Department.
Dummies need to be registered at the base lodge by 11:00am to be judged on creativity. The downhill jumping will begin at 1:00pm. An awards ceremony will follow on the patio of the Base Lodge.
Over $5,000.00 in Prizes will be awarded Most Creative, Best Crash, Egg Beater, Judges Choice and Overall Dummy Downhiller Champions. Those who enter a dummy will receive a free commemorative T-shirt (limit 4 per dummy entry).

Scandinavians to Ski Down North Face of Everest

Sweden's Tomas Olsson and Norway's Tormod Granheim have set off to become the first people to ski down the north side of Mount Everest. The pair are planning to set up base camp at 6,400m and then climb to the 29,028 feet (8,848m) peak some time in May to maked their descent, hopefully in a single run.

The first ski descent of Everest was made by Slovenian Davo Karnicart, in 2000. Nine months later in Spring 2001 the upper section of the world's highest mountain was successfully descended by snowboard, ridden by Frenchman Marco Siffredi.

22 year old Mr Siffredi came down through the Norton Corridor on Everest's northerly slope. Starting at the summit he descended 2500 vertical metres in less than three hours, enduring extreme cold en route. He continued on to make a 17,500 feet (5,300m) vertical descent in total.

18 months later in September 2002 Marco 'disappeared' on his second descent of the mountain. Siffredi from Chamonix, had again stood at the summit of the world's highest mountain on September 9th. This time he attempted a still tougher route than that which took him down to base camp. He was attempting the Hornbein Couloir, further west on the North Face, which has some of the steepest descents on Everest, with 45- to 55-degree slopes the entire way.

Siffredi's descent was watched from above by a fellow Frenchman whilst a Sherpa waited 3000 metres below, able to see 90 per cent of the route. However Siffredi never came in to view, his tracks stopped about 350 metres below the summit and after two weeks of searching with nothing found, he was declared lost on the mountain.

Siffredi was an experienced high-altitude boarder. He had previously snowboarded down three Himalayan peaks over 8,000 meters-Cho Oyu (8,201 meters), Shishapangma (8,046 meters) as well as Everest (8,848 meters). The fearless boarder, who according to friends was driven by a love of steep slopes rather than sponsorship also made his way around the Alps, making many first snowboard descents.

NASA, Formula 1, Red Bull and World Champion Ski Racer Aim to Break Record
A $70,000 US carbon ski suit designed with NASA technology and tested in a formula One race team's wind tunnel is now in the French resort of Vars and hopes to break the world speed skiing record by exceeding 250kph.

The man in the suit is Red Bull sponsored ex-world champion speed skier Austrian Harry Egger, who orighinally broke the world speed record in 1998. Once the record is broken, sometime in the first week of April depending on conditions, Egger's suit will eject a parachuie to slow him down again.

At Least Two Months More Skiing This Season at Snowbird

With some of the world's northern hemisphere ski areas already closing down for Winter 2005-6, Snowbird in Utah has launched a $200 late season pass which is valid for the remaindser of the season, anticipated to last until at least May 29th this year. Last season the resort offered skiing on July 4th.

The resort has been slammed with over 100 inches (2.5m) of snow since March 1st, which propelled the season-to-date snowfall total to 484 inches. Snowbird averages 500 inches of snowfall each season. The mid-mountain base is currently at 142 inches.

Snowbird offers the longest ski and snowboard season in Utah and plans to stay open for daily skiing and riding to May 14th and will operate at weekends through to May 29th, conditions permitting. A host of special activities are planned through April. Hours and lifts will be reduced throughout May.
