Nikita Iceland Park Nikita Iceland Park Project, now in our fifth year as Iceland's only summer snowboard camp. Since 2002 riders from around the world have been coming to our camp and have always been blown away with what they found. Now in with more facilities than ever why don't you become one of the few to experience our snowpark on the remote and beautiful Snaefell glacier. With the twenty four hour daylight of Icelandic summer and not restrained by resort opening hours you can do what you like when the conditions are best. A pink skied midnight session in the park, a skate on the mini ramp, a glassy evening surf, or just a few beers watching the sunrise outside the hostel. We are open to anyone at any level of riding or skiing ability and operate a first come first served policy, we are only limited by the number of places we have to offer. At IPP there are no queues, hassles or ego's , at our uniquely scenic location you will find Snow Skate Surf at its purest.

VILAMOURA, PORTUGAL (May 26) - Tom Kelly, U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association Vice President of Marketing Communications, is on-site in Portugal and available for comments and followup information regarding recent news from the International Ski Federation (FIS) Congress.
News from the FIS Congress includes:
U.S. Resorts to Host 22 World Cups During 2006-2007 Season
Aspen, Beaver Creek to Host Alpine World Cups
Freestyle World Cups Return to Deer Valley, Lake Placid
Snowboard World Cup Stops at Lake Placid for Third Season

"The FIS World Cup events are the face of our sport globally and we're proud to be able to showcase our ski and snowboard sports at such great resorts in America." Each U.S. resort has representation at the FIS Congress. The World Cup events at U.S. resorts in the 2007 season are: ALPINE Nov. 25-26 - Aspen, Colo. (women's giant slalom, slalom) Nov. 30-Dec. 3 - Beaver Creek, Colo. (men's super combined, downhill, GS, slalom) FREESTYLE Jan. 11-13 - Deer Valley, Utah (men's and women's moguls, aerials*, dual moguls*) Jan. 18-20 - Lake Placid, N.Y. (men's and women's aerials*, moguls, aerials) SNOWBOARD March 10-11 - Lake Placid, N.Y. The Beaver Creek event will be the first World Cup combined of any format to be held for men in the United States in the 41-year history of the World Cup. The women had a traditional combined at Steamboat Springs, Colo., in December 1989. The FIS tour directors for each sport develop the various World Cup calendars together with national associations, such as USSA. Event Seminar
THE FUTURE OF MOUNTAIN RESORT COMMUNITIES If you have concerns about the future of our region, you won't want to miss this excellent presentation. Squaw Valley Institute presents a timely talk by Jonathan Schechter, a frequent Tahoe visitor and long-time researcher on the changes going on in many communities like ours. You know the problems: lack of affordable housing for the workforce, traffic jams in peak season and extreme seasonal variations in the local economy. Mr. Schechter will discuss how and why western resort communities are changing and what are the implications for the future. How does our area compare to other mountain resort communities? Mr. Schechter will describe a process he has created for addressing the multiple challenges facing Jackson Hole and other resort communties. It is a process unlike anything ever done here--could it be something we should consider? Mr. Schechter is a long-time resident of Jackson Hole. He has founded and managed several non-profits, has written several publications, has a regular newspaper column, and is a community leader and very original thinker. This program takes place on Friday, June 16 at Resort at Squaw Creek in Squaw Valley. The presentation starts at 7:00 pm and a fun, no-host bar opens at 6:30 pm. A $10 donation will be requested at the door, and children and students with I.D. are free. The event is co-sponsored by Resort at Squaw Creek and Squaw Valley Institute. For more information, visit

FIS NEWS
Unfortunately, most of the 990 Congress participants have had little time to enjoy the beautiful sunny weather on the beaches of Vilamoura (POR). Over 250 hours in more than 100 meetings are being spent in deliberations by the FIS Council and by the various FIS Committees and Sub-Committees in addition to many more informal sessions and gatherings taking place daily. Besides the election of the organizers of the 2010 and 2011 FIS World Championships on Thursday, the FIS Council’s agenda in its meetings throughout the Congress Week includes the approval of the FIS World Cup calendars for the 2006-2007 season as well as decisions on the proposals submitted by the Technical Committees following their meetings earlier in the week (for the Committee meeting schedule, click here). The main work of the Council, however, is focused on the Congress Agenda in order to deliver its opinion to the Member Associations on the various proposals before Friday’s General Assembly. The FIS Newsflash will provide a detailed report on the decisions of the FIS Congress and Council in its 77th edition next week. FIS Ski

Need a lift ?
From cableways.net

BelleayreMountain: High-Speed Chairlift Construction Underway Highmount, NY. - A crowd of curious onlookers gathered Tuesday, May 2nd at BelleayreMountain to witness the removal of the towers of the Super Chief chairlift by helicopter. This was a major milestone in the process of changing the lift to a high-speed detachable quad. As a detachable, the capacity of the lift will remain the same at 2,400 people per hour, but the travel time to the summit will be reduced significantly. A ride that used to take anywhere from 12-15 minutes will now take only 5 minutes. “Our customers will really appreciate the shorter lift ride to the summit,” stated Tom Folts, General Manager of Forest Parks at the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation The bulk of the work to the chairlift is being accomplished in-house by BelleayreMountain employees. To complete the project, fourteen of the lift towers will be modified to accommodate the specifications of a detachable chairlift. Within one month, new tower bases will be dug, formed and poured, and the helicopter will return to set the towers the first week in June. After replacing the loading terminal and modifying the chairs, the new and improved Super Chief will be ready for operation in the 2006-07 ski season.

BEAR VALLEY MOUNTAIN RESORT CONTINUES UPGRADES WITH NEW HIGH-SPEED LIFT Family resort expands value for season pass holders with improvements at facilities combined with year-round discounts BEAR VALLEY, Calif. – Bear Valley Mountain Resort, the premier year-round family destination, unveiled plans to add a new high-speed lift to the mountain. The addition of the quad lift, scheduled for operation in the 2006-07 ski season, comes as part of Bear Valley’s first phase facilities upgrade plans to enhance and expand the resort’s facilities and nearby lodging. The new high-speed lift, manufactured by Leitner Poma of America, will replace Bear Valley’s Hibernation Chair and represents one of the most advanced, environmentally-friendly high speed quad lifts in production. Providing faster loading for skiers, a smoother ride and power redundancy to ensure always-on operation, the lift will reach the summit in less than half the time of the Hibernation Chair. With 67 trails, including double Black Diamond slopes and an abundance of intermediate runs, skiers of all ages and abilities have long enjoyed Bear Valley’s scenic beauty, family atmosphere and diversified terrain. The addition of the new lift is one of many changes in the last 10 months as a result of the ownership change in July 2005. Other improvements include increased grooming capability, lodge remodeling, improved transportation to and from the mountain, enhanced guest services and Direct-to-lift tickets. Bear Valley’s new season passes have also been enhanced to offer more value including all-season discounts to horseback riding, rafting, summer concerts, mountain biking and cross-country skiing. All Bear Valley season pass holders receive 10 percent off food and retail shop purchases at the Winter Lift, group lessons (ages 9+), ski / snowboard repairs and child care (ages 2+). “Bear Valley continues to build upon its reputation as one of the premiere family destination in the Sierra’s,” said Jim Gentling, general manager, Bear Valley Mountain Resort. “The additions of our new high-speed quad lift combined with the tremendous value of the 2006/2007 season passes provide more great ways for visitors to enjoy the mountain.” Cableways

Norway's Stryn Summer Ski area on the Tystigen glacier near Jostedalsbreen Nationalpark opens on the 25th of May.

Last year's snow record made sure to left snow at the glacier at the end of the season, the first time this has happened in many years, and creating a solid base for the snow that came this winter. Unfortunately that snow was a little less that normal although falls picked up in April.

Since the the 1940's people have enjoyed summer skiing here at Stryn. There's a terrain park, ski slopes, and cross country tracks located 1600m above sea level with slopes up to 1900m and a full programme of events.

Stryn Summerski added new lifts in the 80s and 90s, currently operating as chair and T-bar. The terrain park is the main attraction and has several jumps and rails, and the centre aims to expand and improve the park each year. Famous fans on the area include Alberto Tomba and Andrè Aamodt. Today the elite of snowboarders and jibbers come to Stryn to take part in events, competitions and photo shoots..

The area is beautiful, the region offers an exceptional variety of scenery ranging from dramatic tall mountains, lush valleys, deep green lakes, blue glacier arms and large glacier plateaus. To reach the centre drive along The Old Strynefjellet Mountain Road; the road has status as a National Tourist road. The 26km long road is over a hundred years old and was originally created by hand. Road builders initially threw gravel and sand on the snow to enhance the sun melting it, after that 200 men used shovels to clear the road.

After the opening weekend the first event on June 2nd to 5th is for Norwegian Geriatric Snowboarders, followed by the Stryn Freeline Jam on the 10th and 11th. This is the only Freeride Competition slated for the European summer, and all the best freeriders in Scaninavia compete here. Then there are non-stop events through the remainder of June and July.

From the 22nd to 25th June Burton Glory Daze of Summer is the first competition of its kind in Northern Europe - a surf/skate/snow invitational where 16 of the best snowboarders and skaters will, in a chill atmosphere, compete in the three essentials board sports.

The winner gets to spin around on his brand new Bombardier DS ATV, number two will be the proud owner of a limited edition Surftech longboard and number three wins a Surftech Kelly Slater signature short-board.

New Chair For Jackson Hole
Following approval by the US Forest Service, Jackson Hole resort in Wyoming will construct their new East Ridge double chairlift this summer. The lift will take skiers and snowboarders to the summit of the resort next winter and until such time as a permanent replacement for the resot's famous tram is installed. The ride will be approximately five minutes and rise 600 vertical feet (180 vertical metres) from the top of the Sublette Chairlift to the top of Rendezvous Mountain. The new East Ridge Chair, manufactured by Doppelmayer CTEC, will be capable of being moved and utilized elsewhere on the mountain in the future pending Forest Service approval. Next winter therefore skiers and riders will be able to access the resort's summit, the infamous Corbet's Couloir when open and backcountry gates via the Bridger Gondola and a series of chairlifts including the new East Ridge. The Bridger Gondola and Thunder Chair will both have increased capacity with 18 more cabins and 16 more chairs added respectively. From the base, the gondola will now offer an uphill capacity of 2400 skiers per hour (compared to 1800 currently), this 600 skiers per hour increase alone will be double the uphill capacity per hour of the tram.
Meanhile Jackson Hole's tram replacement plans continue on track for a decision this summer. Currently the resort is expecting to install either a replacement aerial tramway or a bi-cable gondola, alo known as a funitel. From research it appears that, subject to financing, construction could be completed over two summer seasons with an opening in winter 2008/09.

Apart from a Jubilee CD and numerous festivities in town, jubilee receptions will be held at the Swiss embassies of Rome, Berlin, London, New York, Tokyo and Dubai in celebration. This summer will also mark 100 Years of the Engadin Museum, 40 Years of the Hotel Europa and 75 Years of the Hotel Sonne.
The AlpenAkademie has several new educational and cultural programs to offer that are detailed in its OFFERS and SPECIALS brochures. In conjunction with the "Albula/St. Moritz/Bernina" bid for listing as a UNESCO World Heritage site, St. Moritz will officially inaugurate the railway route St. Moritz–Venice, a direct link since 2005. Also this summer, Rhaetian Railways (RhB) will be reviving the golden era of the blue-and-cream colored Pullman trains dating from 1929. The fully packed summer calendar with over 150 official events includes a remarkable number of top-class motoring, sailing and cycling events of international reach. The Tour de Suisse, Switzerland's largest sports event, will be stopping in St. Moritz in June, and the 1st Frischi Bike Challenge will be run in July – a mega-event for the mountain biking scene with world-class stars and incomparable shows. DANNY KASS GETS PRESIDENTIAL BOBBLEHEAD AUTOGRAPH WASHINGTON (May 18) - Two-time Olympic halfpipe medalist Danny Kass (Hamburg, NJ) got President Bush to autograph a Bush bobblehead doll Wednesday as U.S. Olympic and Paralympic athletes from the Torino Winter Games met at theWhite House for the traditional round of photos, handshakes and small banter. Bush's remarks included a quick salutation for "snowboarding dudes and dudesses" who won an eye-popping seven medals at the Olympics. Alpine skier Resi Stiegler (Jackson Hole, WY) had the president autograph her Olympic jacket from Roots while moguls skier Michelle Roark (Winter Park, CO) brought some of her designer perfume (Phinomenal) for First Lady Laura Bush. Snowboarder Nate Holland (Squaw Valley, CA) was one of the first athletes to greet the president as he arrived. Two-time Olympian and two-time moguls World Cup champion Jeremy Bloom (Loveland, CO), just out of a mini-camp with the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles where he's trying to become a kick returner and wide receiver, did double duty. He gave Laura Bush a No. 5 jersey from QB Donovan McNabb and then served as autograph table as the president signed posters from Torino for Shannon Bahrke (Tahoe City, CA). "It was really cool," said alpine skier Libby Ludlow (Bellevue, WA), a first-time Olympian. Nordic combined Olympic rookie Brett Camerota (Park City, UT) added, "This is my first time in Washington, my first time at the White House - it's been awesome." But by the end of the day, Ludlow was headed back to classes at Dartmouth College for her spring semester, which runs until June 6. Kass, the 2002 and '06 Olympic halfpipe silver medalist who spends half the year at California's Mammoth Mountain, got the president to sign a bobblehead doll from his personal collection.
OLYMPIANS, PARALYMPIANS VISIT VETERANS AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WASHINGTON (May 16) - Olympic and Paralympic skiers visited wounded veterans at Walter Reed Hospital and high school students Tuesday as part of the U.S. Olympic Committee's traditional post-Games visit to the nation's capital. Paralympic champion Stephani Victor (Park City, UT) wowed 'em at a local hospital while former moguls silver medalist Shannon Bahrke (Tahoe City, CA) learned something about sports in a wheelchair. "We played some games and it was great, just so much fun," Bahrke said after her hospital visit that ran to nearly three hours. "These guys obviously were in the war, serving their country in their way while we represented the country in a different way, but it was so special. "We have such a respect for each other," she said. She and two Paralympic champions - sit-skier Chris Devlin-Young (LW-12/1; Campton, NH), who was paralyzed below the waist in a plane crash while serving in the Coast Guard in 1982, and sit-skier Laurie Stephens (LW-12/1; Wenham, MA), who came home from the Torino Paralympics with two gold medals and a silver - were part of a group of nearly 20 athletes at Walter Reed. They learned from wounded military veterans about wheelchair basketball, sit-down volleyball, even curling.

" Candidates for the 2011 FIS Alpine and Nordic World Ski Championships
The organizers of the 2010 FIS Ski Flying World Championships and the 2011 FIS Alpine, Nordic, Freestyle and Snowboard World Championships will be elected by the FIS Council on Thursday, 25th May. The announcement of the elected organizers will take place at the Hotel Marinotel in Vilamoura (POR) at approximately 18:00 CET. The FIS Newsflash is pleased to present brief portraits of the five candidates for the 2011 FIS Alpine and Nordic World Ski Championships (in alphabetical order)
We are ready for it!" is the slogan of Garmisch-Partenkirchen’s candidature to host the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in 2011.

And they are more than willing to prove it. The 2011 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen promises to be a celebration of sports for all nations, for the youth and adults alike. The German hopefuls Maria Riesch and Felix Neureuther support the application with all their heart and soul: "We are convinced that the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 2011 would increase the popularity of ski sports enormously, even far beyond the German borders." Rosi Mittermaier and Christian Neureuther also support the application with deep conviction: "There is hardly any other place that fantastically combines nearly perfect infrastructure and top level conditions for World Championships."
Garmisch-Partenkirchen and its wonderful landscape have enthralled the fans of alpine skiing for generations. Fantastic runs encourage world class athletes to strive for new achievements. The races down the "Kandahar" are legendary and the slalom races at "Gudiberg" push athletes to their limits. The ski circus already meets at annual FIS World Cup races in the county of Werdenfels - a good reason to confer the 2011 FIS Alpine World Championships to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, to the region, to the whole of Germany. We are ready for it!

Welcome to the new facilities at Holmenkollen in 2011! Five years from now Oslo, the capital of Norway, is prepared to host the FIS World Ski Championships in the Nordic disciplines. The venue will be the famous Holmenkollen, where new facilities will be built to meet the demands of the future. The old jumping hill will be dismantled and replaced by modern facilities. The Cross-Country stadium and courses will be upgraded as well. The famous jumping hill at Holmenkollen has been extended 18 times. The new facilities there will include: • A less steep inrun with a freezing capacity • Reconstruction of the lower part, from the jump until the end of the outrun • New grand stands for spectators • Better working conditions for the media • New facilities for competition management, including jury and judges, media, coaches and athletes • New lift • New floodlight system • Permanent wind protection measures However, the architectural fingerprint of the old hill will be retained in order to maintain the famous Oslo skyline!

Schladming’s candidature for the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in 2011 is based on a concept of the championships as a festival of sport – a celebration of sport in honor of young people from all over the world. Schladming sees itself as an organizer of events ranging from the support of young local athletes with appropriate infrastructure to staging large-scale, international competitions. Schladming’s experience as organizer is second to none: in addition to the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in 1982, the FIS Junior Alpine World Ski Championships in 1997 and 29 FIS World Cup events since 1973, Schladming served as the venue of the 1993 Special Olympics World Winter Games: a true proof of the open-mindedness and philanthropic attitude of the local organizations and institutions and also known as Schladming’s credo. Schladming’s philosophy of international encounters is also reflected in the annual culture festivals featuring a symbiosis of rich Austrian musical tradition and international colors. Sport, culture and nature are the main ingredients of Schladming’s event concept. At the same time, Schladming promises to stage the championships of extremely short ways with stadiums right in the town center! Add to that the legendary Schladming FIS World Cup Night Slalom atmosphere with up to 45,000 spectators and you have the perfect conditions for successful FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in 2011.

USSA News
PARK CITY (May 13) - Financier Peter Kellogg of Short Hills, N.J., a longtime board member of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association and a driving force in its drive to create a legacy endowment, was named Friday night as winner of the Julius Blegen Award, USSA's highest honor for volunteer service to the 101-year-old federation. In addition, the Beck International Award - USSA's highest athlete honor - was given to Olympic champion Ted Ligety (Park City, UT). The Westhaven Award, given annually to recognize the work of an "outstanding" technical delegate (who overseas a competition), was presented to Bob Dart, longtime alpine race organizer and competition official from Winter Park Resort in Colorado.
Bud Keene, whose freestyle snowboarders earned six Olympic medals - including three golds - in Italy in February, was honored as Coach of the Year with Glenn Eddy, freestyle program manager and head coach at Maine's Carrabassett Valley Academy, selected as Domestic Coach of the Year. The USSA Club of the Year, spotlighting a club, which is "providing direction to young athletes through high-level competition programs" leading to elite success, is Waterville Valley (NH). The USSA Congress 2006 has attracted more than 200 delegates with committee and subcommittee meetings through Sunday. Kellogg was cited for his ongoing generosity and his "exemplary leadership" in motivating others to contributing to USSA and the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Foundation.
Ligety, 21, captured the Olympic gold medal in alpine combined - the first won by an American - as he produced the fastest slalom runs. After the Games, he collected his first World Cup victory, winning a giant slalom in YongPyong, South Korea. He finished his season with two more gold medals at the TD Banknorth U.S. Alpine Championships, defending his titles for slalom and combined.
Keene, who retired as U.S. halfpipe head coach as the season ended, directed the halfpipe riders for the past four years. U.S. riders won gold and silver medals in both the Olympic men's and women's contests - and also were fourth in each event. Eddy was cited not only for his work at CVA but for being a Junior World Championships coach, chairman of the USSA Coaches Subcommittee, and longtime involvement in freestyle officiating.
The Westhaven Award, honoring outstanding service as a technical delegate, was given to Bob Dart, head of the Winter Park (CO) Competition Center for 20-plus years, current chair of the USSA Alpine Committee and NorAm Cup Committee, an alpine TD for more than two decades and president of the Rocky Mountain Division board for 12 years. He was the TD at the 2005 World Alpine Ski Championships in Bormio, Italy.
Coaches of the Year chosen by sport for international and domestic included: Alpine - Domestic: Darrell Gray, men’s head coach at Vermont’s Burke Mountain Academy; International: Mike Morin, U.S. men’s slalom and GS head coach; Cross Country - International: Vidar Loefshus, U.S. sprint coach; Domestic: Chris Grover, Olympic development coach for the Sun Valley (ID) Ski Education Foundation; Disabled - Kevin Jardine, recently retired alpine head coach; Freestyle - Domestic: Glenn Eddy; International: Brian Lake, U.S. C Team aerials coach; Snowboard - Domestic: Phil Fell of the Park City (UT) Snowboard Team; International: Bud Keene. USSA Clubs of the Year, as selected by sport included:
Alpine - Squaw Valley (CA) Ski Team; Cross Country - Sun Valley SEF; Freestyle - Wasatch Freestyle Foundation (UT); Snowboard - Waterville Valley. The five Olympic and five Paralympic gold medalists plus the U.S. Snowboarding staff received USSA Chairman Special Recognition Awards.
Olympic gold medalists:
Shaun White (Carlsbad, CA), men’s halfpipe; Hannah Teter (Belmont, VT), women’s halfpipe; Ted Ligety (Park City, UT), men’s alpine combined; Julia Mancuso (Olympic Valley, CA), women’s giant slalom; Seth Wescott (Kingfield, ME), men’s SBX. Paralympic champions:
Steve Cook (Salt Lake City), cross country standing 5K and 10K; Laurie Stephens (Wenham, MA), women’s sit-ski downhill and super G; Kevin Bramble (Truckee, CA), men’s sit-ski DH; Allison Jones (Colorado Springs, CO), women’s standing slalom; Stephani Victor (Park City, UT), women’s sit-ski slalom. U.S. Snowboarding was awarded the special honor for earning seven Olympic medals, including three golds in Torino this past February.
Other awards included:
Paul Bacon Award (contribution in race organization) - Jeff Pickering and Big Mountain (MT) organizing committee; John J. Clair Jr. Award (outstanding service benefiting U.S. ski or snowboard teams) - Harry Stoneham of Eastern Amateur Ski Education Foundation; Bud and Mary Little Award (long-term involvement in FIS or Olympic sport communities) - Tom Winters; Buddy Werner Award (leadership and sportsmanship in national or international competition) - Lindsey Kildow (Vail, CO); West Family Cup (outstanding service) - Tim “Swampy” LaMarche, longtime U.S. alpine coach and race official; Russell Wilder Award (outstanding efforts with American youth) - Nick Preston of Waterville Valley; Al Merrill Nordic Award (outstanding commitment, leadership and devotion to nordic excellence) - Lee Todd; Mike Jacoby Cup Award (outstanding performance in international snowboard competition) - Olympic champion Seth Wescott (Kingfield, ME); Anna McIntyre Citation (distinguished achievement in advancing snowboarding) - Tim Windell; Burckett-Dodge Award (outstanding contribution to alpine officiating) - Ted Sutton.

Nearby & note worthy,..... work continues on a Project I refer to as White Wolf - Troy Caldwell returns to work on the towers, structural and related tasks to complete a lift up the back side of Squaw Valley's Kt-22 from the neighboring Alpine Meadows side of the peak from his private property.
The lift begins from the Caldwell property on Alta Visa drive a few hundred yards from the property boundary to Alpine Meadows. The unloading station cement foundation can been easily seen from the patrol shack on top of Kt-22, those skiing down the Saddle ridge on the Squaw Valley side.
When finished, based on my personal observation, the terrain will serve advanced and Expert skiers and riders.Due to permits, regulations etc....all that formal documentation, access at this time "may" be limited to the final amount of parking spaces and other factors.
I can not confirm the involved details, As I understand, the over-simplified conclusion was a result of a parcel of land beloning to one party being traded, and as part of that exchange a vetran "Headwall" chair from Squaw Valley, so the story goes..
Still my dream,.... someday a long time down the road, IF,..... would be a step in ( nearly )linking the Killer Terrain of Squaw Valley's KT-22 with the Alpine Meadows.

Nikita park project - Grahamn
We have arrived in Iceland this week to start work on the park and organizing the camp. The weather has been fantastic so far and the snow cover looks as good as ever. The park will be up to its usual high standards with a couple of new features like a mini wallride and new ‘high rail’.
For those of you that have been before you will notice some differences to the hostel when you arrive as restorations are in the process of being finished which include 3 new hot water boilers meaning hot showers for everyone and a new kitchen making life easier for the chef.
The bookings have been coming in and Week 2 is now full and with limited spaces left on week 3 and 4 if you are interested in getting out to IPP this year you had better get in touch.

Spring Coordination Group in Val d’Isère: Getting ready for 2009

The spring Coordination Group meeting for the 2009 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in d’Isère (FRA) took place on Wednesday, 3rd May. With the resort enjoying outstanding spring conditions, skiers were still enjoying the final days of the season under bright blue skies when representatives from the Local Organizing Committee, the French Ski Association, EBU and FIS convened in the Congress Centre. Led by President of the Supervisory Board, Jean-Claude Killy, and Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Mayor Bernard Catelan, the on-going work, plans and visions were presented to the group.
The main subjects that were addressed included the imminent construction of the resort’s new sports center that will be located at the foot of the slopes and that will serve as the main building for the media and competition services during the championships. In the coming months, the program for the test events will be foremost on the agenda, together with the preparation of the initial draft of the championship competition schedule.
Plans are also being drawn up to create an outstanding spectator experience. Specifically, the Organizing Committee is devising plans to enable the spectators to visit the competitions free of charge in order to create a real festival atmosphere during the championships in Val d’Isère.

Big White To Build Canada's Longest Six-Person Chairlift
Big White Ski Resort in Canada will install the new Snow Ghost Express for next winter. The state-of-the-art $7m six-passenger chairlift will be constructed at the base of the popular Ridge area. The Snow Ghost Express will be the longest six-passenger chair in Canada at 6190 feet, (1862 metres) long, and will whisk skiers and riders to the top in just under six minutes. Situated parallel to the current Ridge Rocket Express, the Snow Ghost will service Big White's most popular runs and terrain. The two lifts combined will generate an uphill capacity of 5,400 skiers per hour (ten passengers every seven seconds) and increases the hourly lift capacity to an impressive 28,000 riders per hour. Big White boasts the second-highest skier visits in BC and the third-highest in Canada.
The lift is named after the legendary snow covered trees that Big White is famous for in its alpine region. The Leinter-Poma lift will be built using a local Kelowna contractor. "This is the best equipment in the world at this time," commented Resort President, Peter Schumann.
Construction of the Snow Ghost Express commenced on April 18th, 2006, a day after the resort closed for the season. Big White

CHRIS BRIGHAM NAMED ALPINE MEN'S HEAD SPEED COACH PARK CITY, Utah (May 8) - Chris Brigham, a member of the U.S. Ski Team alpine coaching staff since the mid-Nineties, has been promoted to men's downhill and super G head coach, Men's Head Coach Phil McNichol announced.
Brigham replaces John McBride, who retired after 10 years with the U.S. staff, including the last four as downhill/SG head coach. Pete Bosinger also retired at season's end, creating a second opening on the World Cup staff.
Brigham grew up in Sheffield, Mass., in the southern Berkshires, and was a racer until graduating from UMass-Amherst in 1989. He coached at Waterville Valley Academy (NH) and the New York Ski Education Foundation for five years, joined the U.S. staff with the '95 season for a year, spent '96 with the Canadian downhillers and returned to the U.S. Ski Team staff for good after the 1996 season. With Brigham moving up, McNichol said Europa Cup Coach Rewk Patten, formerly with Colorado's Crested Butte Academy before joining the U.S. coaching staff before last season, was being promoted to the World Cup squad and former Australian speed coach Michael Branch has been added to the staff, too. Brigham pointed to the talent on the team and said he looked for younger skiers to keep moving up. Following the retirement of former world champion Daron Rahlves (Sugar Bowl, CA), the veterans include reigning world DH and SG champion Bode Miller (Bretton Woods, NH) and two-time Olympians Scott Macartney (Redmond, WA) and Marco Sullivan (Squaw Valley, CA) plus 2006 Olympian Steve Nyman (Orem, UT) with Bryon Friedman (Park City, UT) returning from injury. “I’m pretty excited. Having been with the Ski Team [more than a decade], it’s good to have the continuity...and Mick’s practically been part of our staff these last two or three seasons, so that’s all to the good,” Brigham said. “We’ll miss Daron, of course, but we’ve got some athletes proving themselves on the World Cup...and it should be a fun season.” In other coaching moves, Forest Carey - Middlebury College alpine head coach and a former U.S. Ski Team athlete - has been added to the men's slalom and GS staff. Carey replaces Tom Sell, who takes over as men's development coach with Andrew Cesati assuming additional duties as conditioning coach, while Manuel Gamper, who was a seasonal coach last winter with the men's tech team, replaces Patten on the Europa Cup staff.
U.S. Alpine Director Jesse Hunt said, “Phil’s done a tremendous job filling key positions in a post-Olympic period when there’s been turnover in veteran staff. The goal of keeping consistency and continuity is being achieved in the men’s program, and it reflects our ongoing philosophy to fill important positions, where possible, from within the organization. I’m proud we’re in a position to charge our own coaches with leadership roles.”

Iceland Park Project Since its conception in the summer of 2001 the Iceland Park Project’s impact has been phenomenal. Our inaugural camp in 2002 came out of nowhere on a shoestring budget and received more media coverage than any other European camp and since then IPP has gone from strength to strength especially with the help of our sponsor Nikita who have facilitated a huge improvement in our facilities. Run by three head shapers hailing from the legendary SPC55 Camps in Austria, IPP has proven it can deliver what it set out to do - namely to build a top quality park in a spectacular landscape, create a relaxed atmosphere where pros and guests ride together and to supply the snowboard media with unique and spectacular images. The following list of coverage is testament to just that. The 2005-06 winter is upon us and already IPP is featuring heavily in magazines and films around the world. The park itself is situated near to the top of the Snaefelles Glacier, reputed to be one of the seven ‘energy centres’ of the world!. A normal day up the hill at IPP involves a twenty minute van ride up the dirt road to the snowline. From there, depending on snow conditions, it is a five to ten minute hike or a short cat ride or sled tow to the main park area. Once in the park it’s a full hiking experience and as the park is never crowded this adds to the chilled and all-together atmosphere that IPP is all about Iceland Park Project

No Summer Skiing at Alpe d'Huez This Year

Alpe d'Huez has decided not to offer summer skiing this year and probably not for the next few years due to the melting of the resort's Sarenne glacier.

"There is now a real problem with the glacier that is disappearing so we need to be really careful," said a resort spokeswoman. "It is not a problem of lack of snow as we got a lot this winter, but a problem with the glacier itself. So the summer ski is stopped for this year and for years coming. We do not know yet for how many years."

The spokeswoman added that there were plans afoot to do something to "help" the glacier, probably later this year, but that it was too early to discuss the details.

In previous years Alpe d'Huez has offered glacier skiing and boarding from early July June to the end of August (exact dates determined by snow conditions). Accessed by the Pic Blanc, the lift-served summer snow area ranges in altitude from 2730 to 3330 metres. It is unusual for summer glacier skiing to offer so much expert terrain. Alpe d'Huez was also one of the few summer snow resorts to have offered cross country skiing on the glacier, with 3 and 5km circuits attracting top class teams including the French National squad.

There is a growing list of former summer ski destinations including Alagna and Bardonecchia in Italy and St Moritz and Verbier in Switzerland all of which no longer offer summer glacier skiing. Val d'Isere added snow making to its glacier in order to be sure to be able to offer summer skiing this year and plans to "see how it goes" according to a resort spokeswoman.

Winter Olympics Bid for India Could Be A Possibility
Development of a $300 million ski resort in India's Himachal Pradesh region could lead to the country, which will host the 2010 Winter Commonwealth Games at Delhi and plans to use its current leading resort of Gulmarg for some events, putting in a bid to a host a future Winter Olympics.
The Himalayan Ski Village (HSV) resort planned by American billionaire Alfred Ford's and his long term friend John Sims aims to be up and running by the winter of 2008-9, employing some 3,000 people directly and thousands more in the supply chain. The HSV board also includes Indian and other investors. Along with being a world class ski resort the Himalayan Ski Village will promote ecologically sustainable practices and organic farming. HSV will cover 100 hectares and offer top-end hotel and condominium accommodation as well as shops, restaurants and a luxurious spa. There will also be a 2,000-capacity convention centre, a handicrafts market to showcase the work of local artisans and a theatre complex.

The FIS Academy will be holding three management education modules at the FIS Congress. These modules cost a total of €250. The 6-day Program, tailored to the needs of the FIS Family, will be held in the week following the Congress in Manchester (GBR). FIS is pleased to announce the appointment of Marcel Looze (NED) to the position of FIS Snowboard Race Director. He will commence officially from 1st June, 2006 but will, however, also be present in his new position at the 45th International Ski Congress in Vilamoura/Algarve (POR) from 21st to 27th May, 2006.
Succeeding Alex Höller, who returns to the family business, Marcel Looze (40) brings to his new role a diverse set of skills and experience with several sport disciplines. A member of the FIS Snowboard and Alpine Committees since 2000 and of the FIS Children and Youth Committee since 2003, he also understands the challenges and responsibilities faced by event organizers, having organized several FIS Snowboard World Cup and European Cup events between 2003-2005. Day-to-day sports management know-how collected in his current role as Technical Manager at the Netherlands Ski Association, and previously as Elite Sports Manager at the Netherlands Triathlon Association and as the owner of an event organizing firm, round up Looze’s profile as a multi-faceted sports professional. “I am very excited about this opportunity and I believe that I will be able to both sustain the on-going development and bring some new ideas to the Nokia Snowboard FIS World Cup”, says Looze and adds:”I am really looking forward to working together with the entire Snowboard family.”

OLYMPIAN JONNA MENDES RETIRING AFTER 10 YEARS ON WORLD CUP
PARK CITY, Utah (May 2) – Two-time Olympian and former World Championships medalist Jonna Mendes (South Lake Tahoe, CA) has announced her retirement after 10 years on the U.S. Ski Team.
Among Mendes’ career accomplishments, she earned the bronze medal in super G at the 2003 World Championships, four U.S. titles (two in downhill, two in giant slalom) and two Junior World Championships silver medals in downhill. “I’ll miss everybody. The friendships are such a great part of this, but after 10 years, I feel it’s time to move on,” Mendes said Tuesday. “I’m looking into taking some college courses and maybe doing some volunteer work or even working for a nonprofit organization. I’ve had some great experiences with the [U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team] Foundation, and that’s really opened my eyes to nonprofits.
“I’m still passionate about skiing but I’d like to immerse myself in something new now and explore different opportunities. I’m excited about what’s next,” she said. Mendes possibly will coach at a Ski Team development camp in June; “I want to give back and I’m looking at staying involved in skiing at some level, and this is a terrific opportunity,” she said.
“It’s always tough when an athlete retires, but especially when it’s someone like Jonna. She had a very good career - that medal at Worlds in St. Moritz was tremendous - and produced some excellent results,” said Women’s Head Coach Patrick Riml. “But beyond that, she was always fun to be with - she’s not shy, for sure, and she was a great teammate, particularly in helping the younger girls coming up because she has such an easy way with people. She’ll be a great ambassador for skiing and we certainly wish her all the best.”
Mendes began skiing at 4 when her family moved to Tahoe. By 13 she was winning regional titles and by 18, Mendes was competing on the World Cup circuit and heading to her first Olympics. During her career she posted 10 top-10 finishes on the World Cup and had four top-20s in five Olympics races and eight top-20s at the four Worlds where she raced.
Of all the stops in her skiing career, Mendes said she favors the race hill at Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies. It makes sense considering the string of successful breakthroughs she accomplished at Lake Louise: Mendes scored her first World Cup top-30 there before the 1998 Olympics, bagged her first top-20 there early in the 2000 season, broke into the World Cup top-10 during the downhill at Lake Louise in 2000 and 2001 and, after breaking her foot at the end of ’01, came back to the World Cup with a top-10 in the first super G of the 2002 season.
In fact, it was at Lake Louise that Mendes first showed her aptitude for speed: Eighteen years old and ticketed for NorAm action, Mendes told then-Coach Jim Tracy she wanted to go to Europe and race on the World Cup. “Show me something in tomorrow’s race [at Lake Louise],” he told her. Mendes earned her first World Cup points, finishing 26th in a super G and won two NorAm SGs the next day. She got the nod for Europe and two months later, she was in her first Olympics.

Killington
Bar-b-ques are lit, cold drinks are meeting with warm air and more than a few die hards are chasing every last ounce of snow out of the season. Things are good here. The Killington Golf Course opens up on Friday May, 5, I've got a buddy who met up with a couple of brown trout courtesy of his fly rod the other day, and every day I see more and different kinds of bikes on the road. I myself even ventured out of my little cave into the warmth of Spring and chased an evil little white ball around for a few hours yesterday. Good times. Lot's of them. Before we get too deep into warm weather activities (we have all summer for that), it is not only my job, but my distinct pleasure to remind you about tomorrow, May 2... 2006-07 ALL FOR ONE SEASON PASS DEADLINE IS MAY 2, 2006 This is it. Your last chance at the best deal on next year's season pass - as low as $365 plus tax. With access to six resorts all season long - Killington, Pico, Mount Snow, Sunday River, Sugarloaf and Attitash - it's about as good a value as a Drifter could hope to get. In addition, when you renew at the same pass level or higher, you'll receive special added benefits like fewer blackout days or discounts on lift tickets for friends and family. But these prices and exclusive renewal benefits are only available until May 2, 2006. Also, this year we're offering fewer passes than were sold last year and we expect Killington All For One Season Passes at all levels to sell out. Beyond the financials, just consider that a pass to Killington is a pass to: ** The highest lift-serviced skiing and riding in New England, which means the best early and late season conditions. ** 33 lifts and 200 trails, translating into more and better terrain variety. ** The World's Most Extensive Snowmaking System allowing you to ignore the forecast. ** Bear Mountain. Most resorts have a park and pipe, Killington has an entire mountain dedicated to the freeride experience. ** Ramshead Mountain. An entire mountain area and lodge dedicated to the needs of the skiing and riding family.
