Treble Cone - New Zealand

The season got off to a sunny start at Treble Cone yesterday, as hundreds of happy skiers and snowboarders welcomed in winter 2006. Excellent snow conditions in the Main and Saddle Basin made for some fantastic skiing and boarding, while lunch on the deck became a festive affair thanks to Chandon bubbles and some great entertainment from the Lucky Legs Trio jazz band. Mike Jankowski has been named U.S. Snowboarding Head Halfpipe Coach following the retirement of Bud Keene, announced U.S. Snowboarding Program Director Jeremy Forster. Former snowboard World champion Rick Bower will join Jankowski as assistant halfpipe coach for U.S. Snowboarding. The pair will lead their first official camp of the summer this week at Windells in Mt. Hood, Ore. “With Mike taking over as head halfpipe coach, I only see more positive growth for the program. He is a great coach, and it’s the perfect transition for him to become leader of the halfpipe crew,” said Forster. "Also, having Rick join our program is huge. He was part of our U.S. Snowboarding program as a rider and just recently was part of the 2006 U.S. Olympic halfpipe coaching staff in Torino. He is a former World halfpipe champion and a well respected coach." Us Ski Snowboard Fernie Summer

Saas-Fee
The Saas Valley is situated in the south of Switzerland on the border with Italy. Well-known resorts such as Locarno and Ascona in the canton of Tessin are at the same latitude. The Saas Valley enjoys a mild, evenly-balanced climate despite its high altitude, as indicated by the unusually high tree-line and the rich and colourful alpine flora among other things. Visitors can enjoy around 300 days of sunshine a year. Apart from its 350 km-long network of hiking paths, the Saas Valley also has a wide variety of summer activities for both old and young: summer skiing and snowboarding Despite the heat in the Rhone valley in summer, you will have the best conditions for skiing and snowboarding in the Saas-Fee ski area. Skiing in very pleasant temperatures on 20 kilometres of varied glacier pistes is great fun in summer. Both national and international ski teams train in the summer ski area. In summer and in particular in autumn, the area is a meeting place for snowboarders, who show off their skills in the park. There are two lines of kickers: three small kickers, three big kickers with a 5- and a 9-metre table and adjoining them a quarter-pipe and a corner wall at the Snow Park. The half-pipe is located in the middle of the park. ...and for the snowboard expert:

Russian Indoor Ski Centres Under Construction
Russia will become the latest country to introduce indoor year round skiing when it's first snowdome opens on the outskirts of the city's capital, Moscow, in December.
The new 360m slope at Krasnogorsk, just northeast of the city's limits, is being built be developers at a rumoured cost of about $100 million. Its profile is now clearly visible on the city skyline. It will also feature a hockey museum, a hotel and full recreational facilities and is just part of a huge 1.2 million-square-meter residential district under construction on the site, just beyond the Moscow Ring Road.

"The snowdome will help to sell the apartments, of course," said Vladimir Famin, a spokesman for SU-155, told local media. "It increases the prestige of the area." He said the company planned to bring in children from the surrounding schools when the slope was not full.

The dome is the first of three others proposed around Moscow, which has several dozen small conventional ski areas on its outskirts

. A second project is under development in Yekaterinburg at a cost of 44m and Moscow's chief architect, Alexander Kuzmin, is considering a plan to build a giant all-weather ski slope within a slanted office building built above rail tracks between Savyolovsky and Belorussky rail stations on the Moscow suburban rail network. A fourth plan is for the world's largest indoor slope at 1km long, on the southern bank of the Moscow River at Sparrow Hills.

US Snowboarding News
PROJECT GOLD RIDERS STEP IT UP AT WINDELLS FREESTYLE CAMP MT. HOOD, Ore. (June 19) – Following touch-and-go weather for the first few days, a perfect halfpipe and three days of sun highlighted a successful 2006 Project Gold freestyle camp for U.S. Snowboarding at Windells on Mt. Hood, Ore. With U.S. Snowboarding’s coaches Mike Jankowski and Rick Bower at the helm, around 34 riders participated in the seven-day camp that will be capped June 20-21 with the final stop of the Chevrolet Revolution Tour. “We’ve been having a great time snowboarding,” said Jankowski, who took over as head halfpipe coach earlier this month. “When we started the camp last week, Bower and I had all the riders write down six goals and they’ve been checking them off all week. The progression has been really quick and as the riders nail their goals, they make new goals.” With the mission of making sure the riders have the most fun while working towards becoming the best in the world, Jankowski said each day begins with a group meeting to organize everyone’s mental goals and set a theme for the day. “After breakfast and our morning meeting, we do what we love to do the rest of the day – we snowboard,” said Jankowski. “The riders decide if they want to progress, and Bower and I are here to help make it happen. We’ve had riders like Chris Waker (Stratton Mountain, VT), who came into this camp barely landing a backside five, now he’s stomping mute backside nines that look like Shaun White. Everyone has stepped it up. The vibe is good, everyone is feeding off each other’s energy and we’re all having fun.” Nick Fuca (Park City, UT), who is attending his first Project Gold camp at Windells, credited both Jankowski and Bower for the rapid progression. “I’m way stoked to be a part of this camp,” said the 17-year old. “The coaches have been awesome. They have a no-pressure style that keeps the fun going and makes you want to get better. There are so many good riders here and seeing everyone land new tricks really pushes you.” The Project Gold camp concludes with the final Chevrolet Revolution Tour event with men’s and women’s halfpipe slated for June 20 and slopestyle to follow on June 21. Winners of each Revolution Tour stop gain an automatic starting spot for the 2006-07 Chevrolet U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix, the nation’s premier snowboarding tour with prizes that total more than $340,000.

WINNINGEST U.S. AERIALS CHAMPION ERIC BERGOUST ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT PARK CITY, Utah (June 19) – Former Olympic, World Championships and World Cup aerials champion Eric Bergoust (Missoula, MT) has retired from competition after the most successful aerials career in international history – 16 years on the World Cup, four Olympics, four World Championships and 15 World Cup victories. The emphasis, he said Monday, has shifted from planning big jumps to a different kind of jump: he’s planning to marry Sally Jo Beck July 22 in Missoula. they were childhood friends and have been together for six years. “Neither of us is very nervous now,” Bergoust said, “but maybe that’ll come.” Bergoust was an ardent trampoline fan as a youngster, but when he saw aerials footage on ESPN in 1985, he found a new sport. He was the first person through the gate at the 1988 Olympics in Calgary where aerials was a demonstration event; that summer he moved to Lake Placid on his own and was all but adopted by the U.S. coaching staff. He won the NorAm aerials title that season and was on his way. One of the most intense competitors, he would go on to collect the silver medal at the 1997 World Championships in Nagano, Japan, then come back a year later to win the 1998 Olympic aerials gold medal in Nagano. He also was aerials gold medalist at the 1999 World Championships, and was a three-time World Cup champion – 2001 and ’02 in aerials plus the overall title in ’02.At one point, indicative of his dominance in his event, Bergoust owned the three highest scores for an aerials event in history. “He did it all,” said U.S. Freestyle Team Head Coach Jeff Wintersteen. “It’s been fun being around him because he was such a professional, such a hard worker...always looking to do more than the coaches wanted him to do. They’d be looking for him to pull back and ‘Bergy’ would want to do more. And he was a good teammate, which is so important. His record, of course, speaks for itself. We certainly wish him the best.” Bergoust said he had no immediate plans beyond working with Coach Joe Chalmers and local freestyle skiers in the Missoula Freestyle program at the Snowbowl. “Joe’s my best friend and he runs a great program, and I’d like to learn about coaching with him this winter. We’ll see,” Bergoust said. He doesn’t have a “single greatest moment” in his career, Bergoust said, but any list would include his first Olympics (1994 in Lillehammer, Norway, where he was seventh), the ’98 Olympic gold medal in Nagano, and a “Bumps&Jumps” contest at California’s Heavenly resort (also in 1998) when he won after completing five outstanding jumps. Another favorite was any competition in Meiringen, Switzerland, site of the 1999 World Championships.

Big White -Kelowna, BC Big White Ski Resort Ltd. announced the installation of the new Snow Ghost Express - a state-of-the-art $7M six-passenger chairlift, that will be constructed at the base of the popular Ridge area. The Snow Ghost Express is named after the legendary snow covered trees that Big White is famous for in its alpine region. The Leinter-Poma lift will be built using a local Kelowna contractor. "This is the best equipment in the world at this time," commented Resort President, Peter Schumann. The Snow Ghost Express will be the longest six-passenger chair in Canada - 6190 feet, (1862 metres) long, and will whisk skiers and riders to the top in just under six minutes. Situated parallel to the current Ridge Rocket Express, the Snow Ghost will service Big White's most popular runs and terrain. The two lifts combined will generate an uphill capacity of 5,400 skiers per hour (ten passengers every seven seconds) and increases the hourly lift capacity to an impressive 28,000 riders per hour. Bear Valley Ca. a new high-speed lift to the mountain. The addition of the quad lift, scheduled for operation in the 2006-07 ski season, comes as part of Bear Valley’s first phase facilities upgrade plans to enhance and expand the resort’s facilities and nearby lodging. New Zealand Snow
15 June 2006 Coronet Peak opens today!! I imagine that it will be pretty much on piste only but they're pretty good at covering their pistes. 15 June 2006 Happy Valley and Alpine Meadow open tomorrow which is REALLY early for Mt Ruapehu. 15 June 2006 Treble Cone in Wanaka announced today the ski area was all on track to open for the winter ski season on 27 June after a good coating of fresh snow overnight. Our pray for snow party up here may have been a bit over the top.... Apologies to everyone in Canterbury still without power and phones - we were just over compensating from last year. I've noticed forecasts for even more on its way. I'm giggling like a kid in a candy store. Most Ski fields appear to have had enough of the waiting game and are planning to open this weekend, with all to follow the following week. Get ready for some powder.... With the amount of snow predicted for this season, why not upgrade your gear? If you are in Auckland then next weekend R&R Sport is the place to go - Sat and Sun 24th and 25th of June. They are having their massive annual ski sale, with UP TO 50% off skis, boards, boots, bindings, clothing, accessories and more ... They will even sell your old gear on your behalf if you bring it in before close on Thursday 22nd (just no archaic straight skis or rear entry boots please) - so upgrade your equipment and notice the difference. You've had plenty of warning, start saving your cash now.

Snow Craziness infects Cardrona! As mentioned in our email yesterday we're going a little delirious up here with so much snow (for evidence see the sheep photos further down). As part of this craziness we thought we'd offer a special deal for those who haven't bought a season pass or have friends who may have forgot? It's simple - if you purchase a club card you'll get one for free! This promotion runs from tonight (June 14) through to June 22, 2006. You can only purchase this through the website and your free card must be of the same or lesser value. What's a club card? A Club Card looks similar to a Season Pass. It has your photo on it and must be presented at the Ticketing Office to receive your discount (e.g. $14 off an adult lift pass). It makes sense if you are skiing or boarding 3 days or more at anytime throughout the season as well as doing other activities on your holiday. Club Card Card Price Club Card Day Pass Adult $35 $60 Student $30 $50 Child $20 $30 Other Activities? Other activities include deals with Shotover Jet, AJ Hackett, Queenstown Rafting, Lakeland Adventures (Wanaka) and other Queenstown and Wanaka winter activity companies. Cardrona

from Jeremy,... A reply ,…. currently, you are still able to ski Kirkwood top to bottom! We have a ton of snow and allow people to hike the entire mountain now that we are closed. This means that after the end of April, skiers have been accessing even the "forbidden" Cirque. If you are referencing hiking during our regular season, we do have an open boundary policy when avalanche conditions are low. permitted just about anywhere but the Cirque. Whistler Blackcomb & CANADIAN Ski Council
After an amazing winter season at Whistler Blackcomb the show will go on this summer with glacier skiing and riding. Beautiful weather is here and Ullr has left a pile of snow that will put this summer’s glacier skiing and riding on track to be one of the best in years. Glacier skiing and riding on Blackcomb Mountain’s Horstman Glacier begins June 5 through to the end of July. “We’ve got lots of snow to create incredible camp terrain features this summer,” says Stu Osborne, Whistler Blackcomb Parks & Glacier Operations Supervisor. “There is lots of snow on the glacier to build a large variety of features and to bring back the public half pipe.” Starting on June 5, and continuing through to the end of July, the summer glacier operation entices the best pro skiers and riders to coach and train with summer camps like Momentum, Camp of Champions and High North Ski Camp. Each camp caters to all ages and skill levels and teaching the latest tricks and techniques to the willing. Every year the camps get better with more innovative terrain and every year the big names show up to coach and impress. The Horstman Hut at the top of the 7th Heaven chair is open daily for lunch or snacks. While enjoying the view from the patio, top it off with a BBQ at 7,400 feet. “The Horstman Hut Patio is the best place to be in the summer. The view, the sun, the BBQ’s and of course the skiing are all part of the great atmosphere on Blackcomb,” continues Osborne. “Many guests come up for the sightseeing, to eat lunch in the high alpine or to check out the glacier action – it’s a great experience.”

The addition of the quad lift, scheduled for operation in the 2006-07 ski season, comes as part of Bear Valley’s first phase facilities upgrade plans to enhance and expand the resort’s facilities and nearby lodging. Decisions of the 45th International Ski Congress in Vilamoura (POR) Convening in Vilamoura (POR), the 45th International Ski Congress made the following important decisions: Decisions directly related to the ski sports Acceptance of Ladies’ Ski Jumping into the program of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. Pending approval by the organizer, an individual event on the normal hill could be included as soon as at the 2009 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec (CZE) and a team event as of the 2011 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo (NOR). The Congress also decided to submit a proposal to the International Olympic Committee to include a Ladies Ski Jumping event in the program of the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver (CAN) in 2010. Inclusion of a Nordic Combined Mass Start competition into the program of the FIS Nordic World Championships. Pending approval by the organizer, the event could be introduced as early as at the 2009 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec (CZE). Increase of the maximum age for athletes at the Junior World Ski Championships in Ski Jumping from 18 to 20. Rejection of an introduction of FIS World Championships in Long Distance Cross-Country Skiing. As an alternative, the Congress asked the Cross-Country Committee to investigate the options for increasing the length of the longest Cross-Country Skiing race on the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships program. Adoption of detailed criteria for FIS disciplines and events, including the possibility of exclusion of a discipline from FIS when it is no longer practiced in at least twelve National Ski Associations on at least two continents. Moreover, the Congress decided that the status of FIS World Championships and FIS Junior World Championships in all disciplines may only be afforded when there are a minimum of eight (8) nations participating/represented in a competition.
Alpine Skiing Nations’ Team Event The nations’ team event was introduced at the 2005 FIS Alpine Ski World Championships in Bormio (ITA) and only the best nations are eligible to compete in the event. The competition consists of a super-G and a one-run slalom with four of the six entered athletes, two men and two ladies, participating in each race. At the end, the athletes’ rankings in their respective group results are added up to determine the overall ranking of each nation. In Bormio, nine nations challenged for the first edition of the competition where Germany claimed a surprise triumph ahead of Austria. In the second edition at the FIS World Cup finals in Åre (SWE), the best eight teams were at start. For next season, two nations’ team events are planned: at the FIS Alpine Ski World Championships in Åre, and at the FIS World Cup finals in Lenzerheide (SUI).

India's Rohtang Pass Opens For Summer Skiing
A combination of recent heavy snow, a heat wave across India and the opening of the Opass road a month ahead of schedule has led to booming snow business for the Rohtang Pass in the country's Himachal Pradesh region.
The road, which peaks at 3980m (13.050 feet) 51-km (32 miles) from Manali becomes a centre of winter sports as soon as it opens in May or june each year, with snowmobiling, tubing, skiing, sleigh and yak rides all popular with tourists visiting the region.
Temperatures in Delhi have reached 45 degrees, whilst those at the Rohtang Pass are down closer to freezing. Congestion in the area, which is the gateway to the beautiful Kullu valley, has led to police being called to keep traffic moving.

Diablerets Offers Cross Country Glacier Skiing This Summer
The summer glacier skiing area at Les Diablerets in Switzerland will be available for cross-country skiers only this summer, with the season scheduled to start on July 1st. There will be a 5km loop for cross-country ski fans.
The stunningly beautiful ski area close to Gstaad and known as Glacier 3000 had previously offered four different summer ski lifts on the glacier, which is reached by taking two spectacular cable car rides in succession. The glacier lifts include one chairlift and three T-bar ski lifts which previously accessed five or six runs. The area was even more popular withsummer 'boarders than with skiers.
Glacier 3000 came under the ownership of Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone a year ago and was not open for summer skiing at all in 2005.

Whistler
Whistler Starts Work on New Quad Whistler Blackcomb has broken ground on the construction of the Piccolo Express, the resort's newest high speed detachable quad. The new lift on Whistler Mountain will be open for the beginning of the 2006/2007 season and will run from the bottom of Flute Bowl to the peak of Piccolo. It will provide access to more than 1,000 acres of spectacular high alpine terrain. With a current alpine snow base of approximately two metres or six feet, the resort is still open for skiing and riding. Beginning construction while there is such a significant amount of snow on the ground is a strategic environmental move. The snow acts as a protective layer to the ecosystem underneath, minimizing the construction footprint as much as possible. The new Piccolo Express Lift will open up a brand new era of high alpine access for intermediate skiers and snowboarders as well as the experts. For the first time, guests will have high speed lift access to this spectacular terrain, with its legendary vast bowls, deep snow and exciting gladed sub-alpine skiing. The new lift will provide access to a range of gentle and challenging terrain including the wide open upper bowl area, a new high-intermediate gladed area, and two new conventionally cut trails for low-intermediates.
Whistler Blackcomb is currently open for Summer Skiing and Riding

Falls Creek - Australia
The approach of the 2006 winter season at Falls Creek, barely two weeks away, has stimulated a frenzy of activity on and off the resort's slopes. The Australian resort has installed the longest moving carpet in the country, named Mouse Trap. The family-friendly, covered moving carpet (the first and only covered carpet in the southern hemisphere) is 114 metres long. The carpet replaces the Tom Thumb lift and has been imported from Austria, to transport the resort's growing number of children to the top of a gentle slope.
Falls Creek Ski Lifts has installed an additional beginner-friendly ski lift at Playground (aptly called Monkey Bar) to make life even easier for newcomers to skiing and snowboarding. Both Monkey Bar and Mouse Trap lifts are quite close to the award-winning children's Snowsport School, which facilitates easy access for an instructor with his (or her) group of budding skiers and boarders.

So the snow feels like Silly putty? Chances are on older corn, dusted by spring pollen and wind blown contaminates, the wax is NOT Helping. Clean corn yes! Wax however in SOME cases the wax may actually act like ELMER's Glue can bond the dust and pollen to the bottom and cause drag, like in going over the Handle bars. So when the slurppy stuff gets HEAVY,sloppy, Thick, pancake batter, You may be better of scraping the bottoms clean
