Kitzbühel

July was hot, and August will not be much different - according to the weather man at least! Not to worry, the nights in Kitzbühel are not only lively but also - thanks to the mountains - cool. Not to mention the refreshing mountain lakes. At the moment their clear waters are the most sought-after form of liquid (apart from the occasional schnapps, perhaps).
In August Kitzbühel will be offering its usual rare combination of action for all and the peace and quiet of restful mountain scenery. Theoretically you could dance the night away, then give our mountain guides Madeleine and Engelbert a hard time with your party mood, retire for a dose of après-golf, switch effortlessly to some evening shopping, and start all over again. (Believe it or not, I have tested the theory. All I can say is, don't try it at home! This is really something that is only possible in Kitzbühel!!)
Whatever, have a good time in the most beautiful of all Alpine resorts!

Athletes in Summer Training – Ski Jumping Martin Schmitt wants to return to the top ... more The Southern hemisphere Continental Cup seasons are about to start. Traditionally, the South American Cup (SAC) will kick off at Chapelco (ARG) with the ladies’ and men’s giant slalom races on 6th August, 2006. Typical of Argentina, the Chapelco SAC races will be combined with the national championships in slalom and additional FIS races. The SAC will continue with more technical and the first super-g races at Cerro Catedral, Bariloche, and further slalom and giant slalom events in Las Lenas in mid-August. At the end of August, the SAC will move to Chile, featuring the first downhill and other speed races in La Parva, most likely with substantial participation by leading European athletes who will take advantage of the training opportunities. Following a stint at El Colorado, near Santiago de Chile, the last two Cup weekends will take place in Termas de Chillan, a candidate for the 2010 FIS Junior Alpine World Ski Championships. The schedule at Termas de Chillan will also integrate the premiere super combined races in the SAC and all of Southern hemisphere. With just one race a season, there will be no separate standings or World Cup qualification, however. Three super combined races, as required for a valid discipline ranking, are being planned for this year’s European Cup for the first time.
Meanwhile, the Australia / New Zealand Cup (ANC) will start at Mt. Hotham (AUS) with several races in the technical disciplines from 28th – 31st August, 2006. Traditionally the ANC is a very important opportunity for young athletes around the region to prove themselves but will be especially so this year due to the retirement of several leading regional skiers following the 2006 Olympic Winter Games. Additional slalom races will be staged at Mt. Buller (AUS), followed by a move to New Zealand where the only speed weekend in this year’s Cup will take place in mid-September, including the debut of the super combined in the ANC and all of Australasia. The grand finale of the ANC will be held in Whakapapa on the North Island (NZE) from 18th-22nd September.

STEAMBOAT OFFERS 2006/2007 ADULT EARLY SEASON PASS FOR $935
It is never too early to think about next season
Mountian Music Steamboat
Chicago Blues Reunion June 30, 5:30 p.m. Howelsen Hill In 2004 a collection of Blues legends returned to Chicago for a limited number of performances and produced "Buried Alive in the Blues" audio CD and 60 minute DVD, released July, 2005. The legends that will play in Steamboat Springs June 30, 2006 include Barry Goldberg, Nick "The Greek" Gravenites, Harvey "The Snake" Mandel, Tracy Nelson, Sam Lay, and Corky Siegel with backing by a band of top flight pros including Gary Mallaber, Rick Reed and Zach Wagner. Chicago Blues Reunion defined the sound of their generation in the 1960s. In that time, they helped create the historic transition in popular music from acoustic folk to electric blues-influenced rock. For four decades they have continued to be an inspiration to younger generations that followed their trail blazing path. Michael Franti & Spearhead July 7, 5:30 p.m., Steamboat Ski Area Michael Franti and Spearhead will make its only Colorado appearance this summer in Steamboat Springs Friday, June 7. Franti and Spearhead's music has been described as a 21st century world-wise groove nodding towards reggae, dancehall, bossa nova, Afrobeat, and funk. With its unique sound and political conscience, Franti and Spearhead's performance is sure to gain a nod from music lovers of all types. Los Lobos July 27, 5:30 p.m., Steamboat Ski Area Los Lobos had already been integrating the songs of Richie Valens into their sets for nearly ten years before film "La Bamba" propelled the band into the limelight in 1987. This band from East L.A. has evolved from early 80s punk rock into a group of master musicians with a unique, creative chemistry. Over the years the band's music has varied from traditional Mexican, Chicano R & B, Latin stomp and Memphis blues to Tex-Mex and rock. Matt Costa August 11, 5:30 p.m., Howelsen Hill If it were not for a broken leg, Matt Costa might be touring the world as a professional skateboarder rather than a musician. It was during an 18-month rehabilitation period that allowed Costa the time for learning the guitar and writing songs. The 23 year old plays with Jack Johnson on Johnson's latest CD the soundtrack for Curious George while also launching his own CD, "Songs we Sing" which has hints of "Mid-'60s folk-pop" along with a more contemporary sound. Susan Tedeschi August 22, 5:30 p.m. Howelsen Hill This year's finale on August 22, features guitarist, singer and songwriter Susan Tedschi, known for her ability to craft elements of classic blues, rock, R&B, folk and gospel into a distinctly individual style. Her influences are Bonnie Raitt and Janis Joplin for voice and Buddy Guy, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Freddie King for guitar combine for a new generation of blues sound.

Treble Cone Ski Area in Wanaka has announced plans today for a Gondola to provide access from the valley floor to the alpine playground. A resource consent application has recently been lodged to provide for the link and its associated buildings.
The proposal will offer safety and efficiency improvements, as well as providing visitors with a greater level of enjoyment and customer service. The proposed gondola will take 2,000 passengers per hour, up the 945m vertical rise from Cattle Flat to the Ski Area. The 3.3km trip will take 10.5 minutes, a significant saving on existing drive times.
The new project marks the first alpine gondola in New Zealand. This project will have a landmark effect on year round tourism in New Zealand. The gondola base buildings have been designed to reflect a homestead and farm buildings of a form traditionally associated with high country stations of the Southern Alps. The buildings will provide for gondola machinery and cabin storage, as well as the ticketing and commercial functions associated with the ski area. The Gondola at Treble Cone will provide Wanaka with a year round facility which can provide visitors with a world class alpine experience” Initial construction of the $20.0 million gondola is likely to take 10 months. Other associated facilities covered in the application will then be staged according to utilization. The establishment of the facility will support 13 full time jobs during construction and 3 full time jobs on an ongoing basis. Treble Cone

USSA NEWS
WHITE WINS TWO, TETER TAKES HOME FIRST ESPY AWARD LOS ANGELES (July 14) – You never know if Olympic gold medalist Shaun White (Carlsbad, CA) is smiling or not behind his trademark “masked-bandit” black bandana he wears while competing, but there’s no covering up that toothy grin when White suits up in chocolate pinstripes for he 2006 ESPYS Co-presented by GMC and Under Armour. Tune in Sunday night, July 16, at 9 p.m. ET to watch White win two awards during the annual awards show on ESPN. White, who was especially happy to accept a hug from Carmen Electra, collected his ESPYs for Best Olympian as well as Best Male Action Sport Athlete, while women's Olympic halfpipe champion Hannah Teter (Belmont, VT), who has made several trip to the ESPYs, finally took home her career-first ESPY for Best Female Action Sport Athlete. A record seven Olympians and Paralympians from the U.S. Ski Team and U.S. Snowboarding were nominated for ESPY awards. In capturing his Best Olympian award, White knocked off Teter and two U.S. Ski Team champions – women’s giant slalom gold medalist Julia Mancuso (Olympic Valley, CA) and men's alpine combined winner Ted Ligety (Park City, UT). Teter outpolled teammate and Olympic halfpipe silver medalist Gretchen Bleiler (Snowmass, CO), among others in her category. White and Teter were up for three awards apiece, and White now has three ESPYs in his career. White, nicknamed "The Flying Tomato" for his eye-catching shock of red hair, was one of only three double winners. The sports world’s annual “Academy Awards” night came complete with a red carpet, star sightings and fancy threads for all in attendance. Besides Electra, other Hollywood hotties in attendance were Mariah Carey, Ashley Judd and Matthew McConaughey. "It was pretty cool. ESPN really did it first class all the way," said Ligety, noting he and a friend had flown in the day before and bought dress-up suits – Ligety in powder blue, his pal John Martz (who raced with Ligety as a kid in Park City) in a purple suit. "It was pretty sweet," according to Ligety. He made his way through the traditional red carpet entrance without too much interruption because, Ligety said, "there were some other athletes right behind us. Kobe [NBA star Kobe Bryant] was a couple of guys behind us and we just hung out on the red carpet for a bit, watching all the big famous athletes coming in, getting the full-on royal treatment. Julia was already there, she was sitting behind us when we got inside..." Nominated in the disabled male and female categories were cross country skier Steve Cook (Salt Lake City) and alpine sit-skier Laurie Stephens (Wenham, MA), who have Ski Racing magazine's Outstanding Disabled Skier of the Year for back-to-back seasons. Cook lost his right leg below the knee in a 1988 farming accident – and went on to win two gold medals and a bronze at the 2006 Paralympics while Stephens, who was born with spinal bifida, won two Paralympics gold medals and a silver plus three more World Cup titles this past season. "They had all the skiers and snowboarders in the same area," Cook said. "It was pretty cool, especially that ESPN recognized both male and female disabled athletes. We didn't win, but it was a great experience. And at 38 years old, I finally bought my first suit...I'm sure I'll wear it again sometime," he said laughing. US Ski & Snowboard

FIS News Edition 82 | July 5, 2006
With the masses heading to the beach, skiers and boarders are busy getting ready for the new season. Traditionally, dry-land training and glacier skiing have formed the foundation for skiers’ summer training. Recently, indoor skiing opportunities have emerged as another opportunity for year-round, on-snow training in low altitude. In June, two new indoor Cross-Country Skiing opportunities were opened in Sweden and Finland. With the opening of the Fortum Ski Tunnel in Torsby, Nordvärmland, Sweden welcomed its first indoor skiing facility. The tunnel was born out of an initiative by Per-Åke Yttergård, currently Nordic Director at the Swedish Ski Association. At 1.3 km in length, the Torsby tunnel is also the world’s longest indoor ski tunnel and has the only indoor biathlon arena in the world. The new tunnel’s festive opening included various contests, including a duel between the one-time rivals Thomas Wassberg (SWE) and Juha Mieto (FIN), and a sprint race between Björn Lind and Thobias Fredriksson for the honor of cutting the ribbon. Also in mid-June, Finland’s fifth and the Southernmost ski tunnel located in Paimio, near Turku, opened for training use. The DNA Ski Tunnel in Vuokatti/Sotkamo (FIN) that opened in the spring of 1998 was the first Cross-Country tunnel in the world. In addition to the ski tunnels in the North of Europe, a tunnel is being planned for Oberhof (GER), with the estimated completion date of June, 2008. For alpine skiing, indoor skiing opportunities have existed for years. The world’s first indoor snow center, 'Mt TheBarton' in Adelaide (AUS), opened its doors in 1987. While the Adelaide facility has since closed, indoor ski slopes can now be found in several countries including Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, the Great Britain, Spain, and New Zealand, to mention just a few. The longest indoor ski piste (640m, with an altitude drop of 57m) can be found in 'Alpincenter' near Bottrop (GER). Bottrop has served as host to several FIS Alpine European Cup events as has 'Snowworld' in Landgraaf (NED), which has also hosted FIS Snowboard World Cup events. Most recently, in December 2005, indoor skiing broke a new frontier as the world’s third longest indoor ski slope at ‘Ski Dubai’ opened as part of the world’s largest shopping mall, the Mall of Arabia. Several other indoor ski areas are currently under construction or proposed, including 'Snowfunpark' in Wittenburg (GER) which shall also include the first indoor Half-Pipe.

Snowbird Summer
– The 18th Annual Founders Title Company Folk & Bluegrass Festival returns to Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort Friday through Sunday, July 7-9. “The festival is the premier summer folk and bluegrass event in Utah,” said festival presenter Tony Polychronis. “We’re looking forward to a weekend filled with excellent music in the beauty of Little Cottonwood Canyon.” Greg Brown headlines an acclaimed lineup of artists Saturday, July 8. With more than a dozen albums, Brown’s songwriting has been praised by many and his insightful lyrics paint powerful and often deceptively simple images on a canvas of gospel, blues, country, rock and jazz. Other performers that have discovered the magic of his songwriting include Willie Nelson, Carlos Santana, Michael Johnson, Shawn Colvin and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Additional artists performing Saturday include winner of the 2005 KRCL Songwriter Showcase Amy Speace, Cris Talley, Cold Creek, Cliff Eberhardt, Slipstream and Christine Lavin. The Gibson Brothers anchor the Sunday, July 9, performances. After being named the Emerging Artist of the Year in 1998 by the International Bluegrass Music Association, the Gibson Brothers have earned widespread acclaim with their bluegrass style that is highlighted by outstanding harmony singing. General admission tickets are $25/day for adults, $15/day for full-time students and seniors 65-plus and priority seating is $40/day. Tickets valid both Saturday and Sunday are $35 for adults, $25 for full-time students and seniors 65-plus and $60 for priority seating. Children under 12 are free with a paying adult. That’s the case of Malga Ra Stua – where from July the 1st to September the 3rd, jeep shuttles will bring you from the Park’s Information point in Fiames to Malga Ra Stua.
It’s the same for those streets going to Cinque Torri Mountain hut and Palmieri Mountain hut. Here the limited traffic zone is extended only during the month of August and during certain hours of the day. Detailed information is available at Cortina Portillo Chile
Portillo introduces a new ski lift. Laz Vizcachas, the new Va et Vient ski lift similar to Roca Jack and Condor, is 1,542 feet in length and has a vertical drop of 722 feet. Reigning Olympic halfpipe champions Hannah Teter and Shaun White lead the charge, each receiving three nominations. In just a few short years as a pro, Teter has become one of the most influential female riders in the world with multiple career victories in the U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix, X Games and World Cup tour. She is nominated for Best Olympian, Best Female Athlete and Best Female Action Sports Athlete. White, the most recognized name in action sports, is nominated in the categories of Best Olympian, Best Breakthrough Performance and Best Male Action Sports Athlete. In 2006, the red headed phenom completed the perfect season sweeping all five U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix halfpipe events, the X Games halfpipe and the U.S. Open halfpipe and slopestyle titles. Fellow rider Gretchen Bleiler also captured the overall Grand Prix title in ’06 with victories in four out of five events before winning the Olympic silver medal in halfpipe. The double X Games halfpipe champion (’03, ’05) carries a nomination for Best Female Action Sports Athlete.
Olympic combined gold medalist Julia Mancuso joins Teter, White and fellow Olympic combined gold medalist Ted Ligety in the category for Best Olympian. Mancuso’s ’06 breakout season included three World Cup podiums prior to the Olympics, while Ligety added four World Cup podiums of his own, including a career first victory in giant slalom after the Olympics.

Zermatt
Pyramid with sky platform towering 117 m over the summit of the Klein Matterhorn planned Zermatt Mountain Cableways have opted for Heinz Julen’s and Ueli Lehmann’s superlative project The world has never seen its like: The Zermatt Mountain Cableways are planning a pyramid of glass and steel on the Klein Matterhorn with an observation platform at 4,000 metres above sea level, 117 metres above the actual summit (3,883 metres above sea level). The pyramid is to be filled with restaurants, a multimedia room, infrastructure and maybe even a hotel – all at a height of almost four kilometres above sea level. As many people find it difficult to sleep at this altitude (due to the air’s low oxygen content), the hotel is to be placed under artificial overpressure to maintain an atmosphere similar to that found at 2,200 metres above sea level (just like in a plane). Visitors have to pass through pressure equalisation cabins before entering the enclosed environment. Sky lifts on the outer wall of the summit and the pyramid, which is around 90 metres high (some 30 floors), take visitors to the top: 190 metres from the glacier platform to the top of the pyramid and a further 30 metres beyond this to the glass sky platform. Due to its slightly leaning tower construction, the sky platform (117 metres above the actual summit) will appear to be in a kind of suspended state. This affords visitors not only an all-round view into the distance overlooking Switzerland, Italy and France, but also a view into the depths below – meaning that you have the Alps beneath your feet! The glacier platform will be located at the bottom of the “sky lifts”, directly above the glacier. It will bring visitors right up close to the edges and crevasses of the glacier. Under normal circumstances the only way to get this close to glacier crevasses is to take part in guided mountain tours. The lifts travel a total of 220 metres along the north-eastern face of the summit and the pyramid. The journey in the partially glazed lifts should heighten people’s sensation of being in the mountains. “Man has always strived to reach the realms of the universe and to have magical experiences," artist Heinz Julen is convinced. “This project is a small step in that direction.” The Matterhorn glacier paradise is set to become the pinnacle of great dreams – a place for people to pay homage to the world of mountains, a spiritual dimension. Even now the Matterhorn’s little brother is the highest viewing point in Europe that can be reached by cableway. With this project, the Zermatt Mountain Cableways would even create a new 4,000-metre peak (3,883 metres + 117 metres = 4,000 metres) out of the Klein Matterhorn. It would then be the 77th 4000-metre peak in the Alps (38 of which can be seen from the Matterhorn glacier paradise, including Mont Blanc). “Even in terms of its infrastructure and architecture, the Matterhorn glacier paradise is set to do justice to its superlatives and its uniqueness," believes Christen Baumann, CEO of Zermatt Mountain Cableways. “It will to become yet another Swiss trademark that will complement the existing comprehensive offering.” The project is a unique blend of nature and technology - the tower’s dependence on external sources of energy is to be kept to a minimum through the use of alternative sources of energy, in keeping with the philosophy of a space station (solar energy). The designers are also looking into setting up a wind power plant. Incidentally, the tower will be laterally supported by a tripod construction, similar to the one we all know from glacier crevasse rescues. The tripod construction will be closed and will then look like a pyramid. Construction of the glacier restaurant, the shop, the mountaineering accommodation and underground access to the glacier palace is scheduled to get under way this summer.
