Ticket to Ride
The Burton Global Open Series is also part of the Ticket To Ride (TTR) World Snowboard Tour that gives points to riders based on their results at participating TTR competitions in order to crown a TTR World Champion. Created by world-renowned snowboarder and Burton Global Team rider Terje Haakonsen as an alternative way to rank riders, the 2006/2007 Tour is without question the largest culmination of independent freestyle snowboarding events under one common tour organization. Burton is stoked to support the TTR with the Global Opens, bringing five quality events and a tremendous cash purse to riders participating in the TTR. Chamonix
Winter season begins on December 2nd
Chamonix is a year-round destination thanks to its fantastic environment and major attractions such as the Aiguille du Midi cablecar (3842) or the red cog-wheel train of Montenvers which climbs to the famous « Mer de Glace ». A resort where there is something for everyone, Chamonix is a wonderfull destination, whether during the winter season or summer.

Chamonix valley is located at the foot of the Mont-Blanc, Europe's highest summit at 4810 m. Registered on the world heritage list, Chamonix, the birthplace of mountaineering, is considered the grand old lady of alpine resort.
90% of the ski areas are located above 2000 m, making Chamonix a « guaranteed-snow » resort. The ski terrain is divided into three areas all linked by an efficient shuttle bus service and a panoramic sightseeing train (free with Guest Card or Ski Pass). The world famous Grands Montets is considered the Mecca for skiers, snowboarders and freeriders but there are many different possibilities available for skiers of all levels throughout the resort.

Mt. Balwang's Deungsan Road, the trees appear as if they are almost human, living beings just like us. With so many specimens of trees in this mountain, you will probably find a tree that resembles you. At the peak of Mt. Balwang, the first thing that you will notice is a Swiss-style building called Dragon Peak. Behind that lies the Sky Garden. Both of these structures have become another enjoyable theme of Mt. Balwang. You will find a coffee shop with a traditional Swiss atmosphere. There is a Korean restaurant and a steak house on the first floor. On the second floor, you will find a western-style restaurant famous for their spaghetti. It is almost a requirement to enjoy a cup of coffee while you soak in the nature while youre here.

Steam Boat
The 2006/2007 season is only 27 days away and winter has blown in with a bang in Steamboat. Nine inches of snow fell at mid-mountain, and nine inches at the summit in the past 24 hours. Seven inches were reported at the base of the mountain (6,900 feet) and snow is continuing to fall. The first snowstorm of the season hit Steamboat on September 16th, bringing the cumulative total thus far to 47 inches at the summit. Mountain crews have been dealing with these ever changing conditions daily as they work to complete some of the more than $7 million in capital improvements for the upcoming winter. Work continues to move ahead on the Sunshine Express high-speed quad as well as the new trails and snowmaking in the Sunshine Bowl area. In addition, Thunderhead and Rendezvous Saddle Food Courts are getting nearly million dollar face lifts and should be ready to serve up an exciting new menu when the resort opens. With all that’s going on, you don’t want to miss the 2006/2007 ski season, so plan your winter vacation now.

Saibei China
New lift Chinese province Hebei, 270 km North of Beijing. In March 2006, Michael Seeber, president of the company LEITNER group and Alessandro Marzola, son of the Dolomiti Superski founder, Gianni Marzola, travelled to China and signed the contract for the installation of the completely new “Dolomite-style” ski resort. Due to its geographical position, its climate and its high population figure, Hebei focuses on the development of ski tourism. The planned ski resort, named Saibei, should emerge in the yet uninhabited valley in the district of Chongli. Among 15 slopes and 6 ropeways, the two South Tyrolean experts in ski tourism plan the construction.

FIS News
Heavy rainfalls during the night from October 23rd - October 24th, 2006 and very high temperatures badly damaged the excellently prepared race course in Sölden (AUT). While all precautions were taken by the organizers, the residual amount of snow and the continuing forecast for high temperatures made it technically impossible to hold the World Cup events on the original race course. FIS’s annual information session for the attending journalists, known as the Forum Alpinum that was planned to coincide with the Season Opener, was also cancelled.
Cross-Country World Cup
A total of four Viessmann FIS World Cup Cross-Country races are scheduled to take place next weekend, on 28th - 29th October in Düsseldorf (GER). For the 5th time, the season starts with sprint races, individual and team, on the bank of the river Rhine in the Old Town of the state capital. Some 146 athletes from 23 countries are registered to participate, which is more than in the last four years. Some typical “distance racers” will also start in Düsseldorf, such as Olympic Champion Katerina Neumannova (CZE), hoping to begin collecting World Cup points. On the men’s side, Peter Larsson, the four-time Düsseldorf winner, will try to defend his unique streak.

Swiss Snowboard dominance in Sölden (AUT)
Like in the past several years, a Swiss rider took home victory in the first parallel giant slalom in the NOKIA Snowboard FIS World Cup. On the ladies’ side, Fränzi Kohli took her career-first World Cup win, also proving her ability to step into the shoes of her retired team mates Daniela Meuli and Ursula Bruhin. Kohli prevailed against Austria’s Doresia Krings who thereby missed her personal hat trick in Sölden. Isabella Laboeck (GER), Junior World Championship runner up in 2005, achieved a small sensation placing fourth as she had never before made the finals (top xx).

As of today there are 100 days remaining until the start of the 39th FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Åre (SWE) from 3rd-18th February, 2007. “In skiing terms, the Åre team has now finished its warm-up and is waiting in the pre-start area, ready to go to the starting line and get on the course,” commented FIS President Gian Franco Kasper this major milestone for Åre. He added: “We at FIS are very positively attuned and looking forward to great championships. The Åre 2007 team has done a 100% job in all the planning and preparation; as a host venue, there are indeed few sites that bring as much know-how to the table. The racing schedule, too, has been planned with possible weather changes in mind, and it provides some options should the weather not cooperate. The organizing committee has also taken maximum advantage of the combination of experience and youthful ideas it entails. We are optimistic that the myriad of ideas will also help create a true championships atmosphere in Åre, such as the promotional activities that will commence following this milestone, in the local media and on Swedish television. Of course, early successes by local athletes will also do wonders for creating the right mood among the public. From an overall perspective, FIS is pleased to note how these championships have acted as a catalyst for many positive changes in the Åre region, all of which will serve to leave a great legacy for the resort for years to come.”

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Mountain) is the southernmost glacier in the Northern Hemisphere. Consisting of 13 peaks, among which Shanzidou is the highest one with an altitude of 5,600 meters (18,360 feet), Jade Dragon Snow Mountain stretches a length of 35 kilometers (22 miles) and a width of 20 kilometers (13 miles). Looking from Lijiang Old Town in the south which is 15 kilometers (nine miles) away, the snow-covered and fog-enlaced mountain resembles a jade dragon lying in the clouds, hence, the name Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
The 13 peaks, which have the altitudes of at least 4,000 meters, are covered by snow all year round; the mountain is called the "Natural Glacier Museum" for it has all types of glacier. Move down from the mountaintop and you can see rivers and pools, which are formed by the thawed snow water running along the valley and through the forests. The plants and the animals are different according to the altitude, so are the views. Every sight brings you a surprise and every step takes you to a new scene. Each of the meadows on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain has its own special character due to their different landscape and height

US Ski Team News
Rains, High Temperatures Cancel Soelden SOELDEN, Austria (Oct. 24) - Rain through the night and into mid-morning, coupled with a weather forecast for unseasonally warm temperatures, forced World Cup organizers Tuesday to cancel what had been scheduled as the season-opening alpine races next weekend. The women were to have raced giant slalom Saturday with 10 U.S. women scheduled to compete in the first race of the 41st alpine World Cup season; the men were to run GS Sunday with seven Americans entered. The next scheduled races are slaloms Nov. 11-12 in Levi, Finland, before the World Cup heads to North America. "They didn't have a chance. The organizers did everything they could from making snow and moving it onto the course, from scraping the glacier for more snow and from injecting [i.e., injecting water into the snow to make it more firm]," U.S. Women's Head Coach Patrick Riml said. "But it started to rain [Monday] over night and it rained all through the night and up to 10 or 11 o'clock. There wasn't a lot of snow to begin with, but the rain washed everything away." The short-range forecast predicted weather in the mid-to-upper 60s in the valleys of Austria and well into the 40s in the mountains. "There was no way the weather was going to cooperate, so they had to cancel," Riml said. The U.S. women will train another day or two, then fly home at the end of the week, while the U.S. men - who have been training an hour or so away on the Pitztal Glacier - will stick around for several days of additional training before flying to Colorado. The two teams will train in Colorado - the Ski Team has just announced an agreement with Keystone Resort for training on North Peak - and head to Finland in the first week of November. www.ussa.org

US Freestyle Team
Freestyle Team Set for 2007 Start
PARK CITY, Utah (Oct. 23) - The customary post-Olympic retirements have taken a fistful of medal-winners from the U.S. Freestyle Ski Team, but an equally big cluster of talent remains for the 2007 season, topped by moguls world champions Nate Roberts (Park City, UT) and Hannah Kearney (Norwich, VT). Reigning world dual moguls champion Toby Dawson and former Olympic, Worlds and/or World Cup champions or medalists Eric Bergoust (aerials), Joe Park (aerials), Travis Cabral (moguls) and Travis Mayer (moguls) retired after last season while 2005 aerials World Cup champion Jeret "Speedy" Peterson (Boise, ID) is taking a year away from his sport. But Wintersteen said, "We still have some pretty outstanding athletes coming back.
"We have some serious talent among the moguls skiers and we're moving in the right direction as we rebuild aerials," he said. The moguls team remains one of the premier squads on the World Cup. Among the men, Roberts and Dave Babic (Washington, VT) are backed by David DiGravio (Farmington, ME), who - given a chance at the World Cup last season - produced his first podium in March. Up-and-comers Landon Gardner (Park City, UT), Tim Preston (Campton, NH) and Mike Morse (Duxbury, MA) are looking to make their breakthrough at the top level.
Kearney leads a women's delegation, which is at its strongest since Olympic and Worlds gold medalist (and five-time World Cup champion) Donna Weinbrecht, former Worlds and World Cup champion Ann Battelle and Olympic medalist Liz McIntyre competed in the mid-to-late Eighties. Former World Cup champion Shannon Bahrke (Tahoe City, CA) and Jillian Vogtli (Ellicotville, NY), a pair of two-time Olympians, plus Michelle Roark (Winter Park, CO), a former World Cup dual moguls champion who won two more World Cup moguls contests last season en route to her first Olympics. Add to that group NorAm champion (five wins) Heather McPhie (Bozeman, MT), veteran Shelly Robertson (Reno, NV) and two outstanding duals skiers - Kayla Snyderman (Winchester, MA), the '06 NorAm champ, and '05 NorAm champ McKenzy Golding (Reno, NV). The ranks are a bit thinner on the aerials side. Ryan St. Onge (Steamboat Springs, CO), who won two World Cup events a year ago, is the top men's aerialist, while Olympians Jana Lindsey (Black Hawk, SD) and Emily Cook (Belmont, MA) are joined by Lacy Schnoor (Draper, UT).
In addition, Scott Rawles has replaced Don St. Pierre as moguls head coach with former World Cup skier Garth Hager joining the moguls coaching staff; McIntyre, who turned to coaching after retiring from competition in 1998, also retired after eight years as moguls technical coach.
The World Cup aerials season opens Dec. 9-10 in Jilin Beida Lake, China, while the moguls schedule begins Dec. 14 in Tignes, France. The Freestyle World Ski Championships will be Jan. 23-28 in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy with the U.S. World Cups Jan. 11-13 at the Chevrolet Freestyle International at Deer Valley, Utah, and the Nature Valley Freestyle Cup Jan. 18-20 at Lake Placid, NY.
Alpine Team
PARK CITY, Utah (Oct. 23) - U.S. Alpine Director Jesse Hunt sees plenty of good things as he looks at the 2007 World Cup season and the Alpine World Ski Championships. After all, Olympic champions Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) and Julia Mancuso (Olympic Valley, CA) are back, along with reigning downhill and super G world champ Bode Miller (Bretton Woods, NH) and Lindsey Kildow (Vail, CO) - a three-time World Cup winner last season. In addition, there are former Worlds medalists Erik Schlopy (Park City, UT) and Kirsten Clark (Raymond, ME) and a hefty handful of up-and-coming talent, headed by Megan McJames (also Park City), who won three NorAm titles a year ago and 2006 Junior World Championships downhill champion Chris Beckmann (Altamont, NY).
"I really like this mix of veterans and young guns pushing them. Nobody can sit back because everyone's pushing to succeed," Hunt said. "No question, this is one of our strongest teams in terms of talent and depth." The 2007 alpine squad includes 18 Olympians - 16 of them from the 2006 team in Torino.
One of the key elements to the optimistic outlook is continuity, which Hunt and his coaching staff have developed with veteran athletes sticking around. Schlopy, at 34, is in his 12th season on the Ski Team; Miller, who turned 29 in mid-October, is in his 11th season. Clark, also 29, is in her 13th year on the Ski Team. All are three-time Olympians. At the same time, Mancuso and Kildow are each 22 and in their seventh year of World Cup racing. Resi Stiegler (Jackson Hole, WY), who turns 21 in November, is in her fifth season.
Miller, the 2005 World Cup overall champion and the winner of 21 World Cup races as this season opens, and Ligety, the Olympic combined champion who also won his first World Cup race in '06, head a men's squad, which Hunt feels could have someone on the podium (i.e., top-3 finish) in every race. On the speed side, Miller is joined by, among others, two-time Olympian Scott Macartney (Redmond, WA), Steve Nyman (Provo, UT), JJ Johnson (also Park City), Marco Sullivan (Squaw Valley, CA), Beckmann and 2006 NorAm super G champion Erik Fisher (Middleton, ID), who had two SG victories and a downhill win plus a Europa Cup DH podium. Kevin Francis (Bend, OR) is knocking on the World Cup door, too.

U.S. SKI TEAM TO PARTNER WITH KEYSTONE, YORK FOR TRAINING KEYSTONE, Colo. (Oct. 19) - U.S. Ski Team athletes will benefit from a new on-snow training partnership between Colorado’s Keystone Resort and the Team. The Team and Keystone, along with York Snow, have partnered to install additional snowmaking on Keystone’s North Peak to provide exclusive early-season training for U.S. Ski Team athletes beginning this November. The partnership was announced jointly Thursday (Oct. 19) by U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) President and CEO Bill Marolt and Keystone’s Director of Mountain Operations Chuck Tolton. It is a one-year partnership that all parties hope to extend into the future. The partnership includes the allocation of Keystone’s Starfire run on North Peak for exclusive training use by the U.S. Ski Team, with York Snow providing additional highly efficient snowguns. The Team also is financially involved in helping support infrastructure and operational costs. The project is the first phase of a snowmaking upgrade on Keystone’s North Peak to accommodate the U.S. Ski Team training program. "One of the keys to our future athletic success is creating a deeper and stronger partnership with our training venues,” said Marolt. “We have enjoyed outstanding partnerships with U.S. resorts, especially in Colorado, for both early season training and competition. Keystone and York have really stepped up to help support our training programs.” Colorado resorts have long factored heavily into U.S. early season training and competition due to the historical early-season snow and the consistent ability to make snow for training in the U.S. The men’s alpine World Cup comes to Beaver Creek with the VISA Birds of Prey races Nov. 30-Dec. 3, and the women’s Sirius Satellite Aspen Winternational World Cup over Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 25-26. The Chevrolet U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix opens Dec. 14-17 at Breckenridge. In addition, the Chevrolet Super Series, part of the alpine NorAm series, will be in Colorado, Nov. 27-30 for the men at Keystone and Nov. 28-Dec. 1 for the women at Winter Park. “We, here at Keystone, share a common vision with the U.S. Ski Team in striving to continually grow the sport and developing young athletes to represent our country,” said Tolton. “This started a few years ago with Keystone’s commitment to the Junior Olympics and local youth freeride and racing programs and has now evolved to hosting the NorAms and the early-season exclusive training with the U.S. Ski Team. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a 10-year-old racer or Bode Miller or Ted Ligety and the entire U.S. alpine team, Keystone is committed to providing the best snow and grooming conditions.” “This is the type of partnership we will be seeking worldwide in the future to provide our U.S. athletes with better training,” said Marolt. “Our long-term goal is to really control our own training space and to expand the opportunity to all of our sport programs.” Keystone began making snow on Starfire and other trails today (at midnight) with the U.S. Ski Team’s alpine team expected to begin training there beginning November 5. “The North Peak facility will provide us with excellent technical training,” said U.S. Alpine Director Jesse Hunt. “And what will really make the difference for us is the ability to have completely exclusive use of the facility and to work with Keystone and York to control the snow environment specific to our training needs.”

The FIS Alpine World Cup season for men and women opens Oct. 28-29 on the Rettenbach Glacier above Soelden, Austria, then moves to Levi, Finland, Nov. 11-12 before heading to North America.

For the winter sports enthusiast the season skipass is by far and away the best solution. Over the years Dolomti Superski, also in recognition of the support of the winter ski fanatic, has always tried to make the season skipass an attractive proposal.
News on the season skipass: now for the family too an economical and welcome solution has been introduced. In effect the bigger the family the better the deal – leaving you free to enjoy your time on the slopes.
When you buy a season skipass for children up to the age of 8 (€ 190,00), or for youngsters up to the age of 16 (€ 460,00) the parent can buy for him or herself a season pass (in pre-sale costing € 570,00) at the price of the junior season pass (€ 460,00).** In this instance a family saves Euro 110,00.

St. Moritz is preparing its 143rd winter season, which will be highlighted by the anniversaries commemorating "100 Years of International Horse Races in St. Moritz" and the 35th World Championships in Bobsleigh. On November 25, 2006, the runs on Corvatsch, and with them the winter sports season, will be opened. A week later, on December 2, the mountain railways of Diavolezza and Corviglia will also be welcoming their first guests of the season. The first top event of the winter – the Women's Alpine Ski World Cup – takes place shortly thereafter. And on the topic of World Cups: as from the winter of 2006/7, St. Moritz will be the new sponsor of the rising local ski talent, Marc Berthod. In December, the St. Moritz Design Gallery will be inaugurating its exhibition of posters "100 Years of International Horse Races" at the Serletta public parking garage. The 150 and more winter events traditionally held St. Moritz will follow in close succession up to around Easter (April 8, 2007), with a third anniversary celebration in March – 10 Years of the "Snow & Symphony" Music Festival. The first St. Moritz Brand Summit will be held from January 28 to 30, welcoming representatives of the world's top 100 brands. And right on time for the winter season, St. Moritz will be launching its own luxury fashion brand. In an initial stage starting fall 2006, the collection will be distributed exclusively via the new St. Moritz Online Store (www.stmoritz-store.ch).
Winter Top Events 2006/07:
- FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, Women's D/C (12/8–10) - 7th Design Summit at the Suvretta House (12/19–21) - Curling: 109th Jackson Cup (1/13–14) - 49th Concours Hippique on Snow (1/14–21) - Bob World Championships, 2 & 4 pers. bob (1/22–2/4) - 23rd Cartier Polo World Cup (1/25–28) - 1st St. Moritz Brand Summit (1/28–30) - 14th St. Moritz Gourmet Festival (1/29–2/3) - St. Moritz Cricket on Ice (2/2–3) - 100 Years of White Turf St. Moritz (2/4, 2/11, 2/18) - Cresta Run: Grand National (2/17) - 39th Engadin Cross-country Skiing Marathon (3/11) - 10th "Snow & Symphony" Music Festival (3/23–4/1)

Off-Season Promotion of 30% discount ends on October 31.

The world's largest revolving carpet ski & snowboard training deck is now in the heart of Hong Kong. Slope Infinity's training decks offers Hong Kong's skiers and snowboarders a dynamic instruction program, ideal for both kids and adults and all ability levels from "never-ever" beginners to the highly experienced & advanced. Using real skis, ski boots, ski bindings, ski poles, and snowboards and with its variable-speed silicone-coated ultra-wide revolving carpet (like a reverse treadmill), one hour of lesson on our training decks equates to several hours of learning on the mountain without the distractions of cold, crowded slopes, and chairlift lines. Training on the revolving carpet has been proven most effective for reinforcing your "muscle memory" and developing efficient habits and skills to improve your skiing and snowboarding techniques. "Muscle Memory" is a term used to describe a learned movement pattern or habit. By performing the same movement pattern repeatedly, more effective nerve muscle connections are made. These new connections repeat more efficiently each time used. Research from motor (movement) learning specialists indicate that repeating the same action 3,000 to 5,000 times, or performing a task approximately 30 minutes for a period of 21 days is necessary to create muscle memory. After developing muscle memory, the new action is automatic and can be performed without conscious thought.

NOKIA Snowboard FIS World Cup kicks off with Parallel events
Overall World Cup winner Siegfried Grabner The clock is ticking
In only two days, the NOKIA Snowboard FIS World Cup 2006/2007 celebrates its Season Opening in SnowWorld Landgraaf (NED). At the indoor event on October 13th, 2006, the world’s best riders have registered to start in the Parallel Slalom. Besides last year’s winners, Julie Pomagalski from France and Austrian Siegfried Grabner, a few other athletes will start who already jumped on the podium at one of the other three World Cups in Landgraaf so far.
Julie Pomagalski has to face only one lady who already made it into the top 3: Ilona Ruotsalainen. The Finnish boarder placed second in the Netherlands two years ago but had an unlucky last season. Other aspirants for the top spot are German Amelie Kober who took home a silver medal from the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin and Fraenzi Kohli who has to carry the Swiss burden of the retirements of her fellow very successful countrywomen Daniela Meuli and Ursula Bruhin. On the men’s side, Sigi Grabner has to defend his title against 2006 Parallel and Overall World Cup winner Simon Schoch (SUI) against whom he won last winter’s final in SnowWorld. Other riders who once had rounded out the podium so far are Adam Smith from the USA who did win the debut of Landgraaf as a World Cup host in the 2004 season and came in third last year. Another one who has won the Dutch event, too, is Urs Eiselin (SUI) who will try to attack but has to suffer from a broken thumb. Nicolas Huet from France and “Canadian Rocket” Jasey Jay Anderson want to smile from the podium again, too.
Who will take over the first World Cup lead of the new season? We all will know more on Friday, 8 PM, when the last run has ended.
Only one week later, the same protagonists will travel to Soelden to meet for the first Parallel Giant Slalom of the season. One can be curious if the Swiss team will dominate the contest like the last two years where the team – including Olympic PGS Champion Philipp Schoch – made a clean sweep of the men’s podium with their riders.

The 24-year-old Croatian said she would «rest for a year and then see what will happen,» suggesting she could decide to retire. «I've decided to take a break this season due to the unbearable pain in my back, my knees and everywhere else,» Kostelic said. «It is not an easy decision to make for someone who loves skiing, but I am not a machine.» Kostelic, who has undergone 10 knee operations and thyroid surgery, won her third overall World Cup title last season. She also became the most successful female skier in Olympic history when she won gold and silver at the Turin Games, adding to her three golds and a silver from Salt Lake City in 2002. Kostelic has won 30 World Cup races, the last one the Giant Slalom at the World Cup final on 18th March 2006 in Are (Swe). At the age of only 24 years she is already the most successful skier of modern times. During the last season she won in all five alpine disciplines – and this in a period of only 36 days. Before her, only Petra Kronberger (AUT) managed this feat. But the Austrian did it in 1990 in a even shorter period of 21 days and instead of the new Super Combined she won the four alpine disciplines and the Combined (Downhill and two run Slalom). In May Janica Kostelic was honored with the Laureus Awards as „World Sports woman of the year“ together with male recipient, the Swiss tennis player Roger Federer. FIS Nordic
The organising committee of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo has produced three new posters. The left one to promote the City of Sapporo is a composite image of Odori Park as seen from the top of the TV tower, a symbolic sight of Sapporo and the Okurayama jumping hill. On the right side the mascot Norkey is shown, aiming to foster a sense of closeness to and anticipation of the championships amongst children. The third poster describes the three Nordic disciplines Cross-Country Skiing, Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined.

Killington
It's coming. Cool nights have turned cold, that occasional breeze has a more than occasional bite to it and my wife asks me fourteen times each and every day when I'm going to put the storm windows up. Apparently it means precious little to her that I don't even really know what a storm window does, much less how to install one. At any rate, winter is breathing down our necks (in a good way). That other thing you hear knocking at your door is the All For One Season Pass deadline. Deadline as in today. Yes, today, or Tuesday the 10th depending on when you're reading this. If you haven't already purchased, this is your very last chance to get in on the single very best deal in all of Eastern Skiing and Riding.
Need more motivation? Join us next Wednesday the 18th of October in Manhattan as we're getting together with the good folks at Warren Miller to bring you the premier of this year's Warren Miller Film Off The Grid.

Moseley electrified the sports world at the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan, with his high-flying "heli-mute grab" during his final run to secure the gold medal. The 360-degree spin while grabbing one of his skis - followed by his innovative "dinner roll" jump (with his body parallel to the ground, he rotated before landing) at the 2002 Olympics - kicked open the door to what has been a revolution in moguls skiing with athletes doing previously banned backflips. His high-voltage smile and engaging personality helped him transcend his sport and become one of skiing's - not just freestyle's - superstars. The bronze medalist in combined at the 1995 World Championships and the freestyle overall champion, Moseley also was the World Cup combined and overall champion in 1996 before capturing five contests and the '98 moguls World Cup title. CHEVROLET U.S. SNOWBOARD GRAND PRIX REGISTRATION OPENS OCT. 17
PARK CITY, Utah (Oct. 9) - Rider registration for the 2007 Chevrolet U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix tour opens for business on Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006. Mark your calendar, then log on to www.ussnowboarding.com to secure your spot in America's biggest competition series. "The Grand Prix Tour has pushed my riding to a whole new level, because at every event, you're riding with the best halfpipe riders in the world," said veteran Louie Vito, "I started out competing like everyone else - watching and learning. But then I would push myself by watching how the best guys would ride in contests and by feeding off the strong energy of the Grand Prix."
The series kicks off at Breckenridge, CO, Dec. 15-16, before heading East to Mountain Creek, N.J., Feb. 2-4, and concluding at the series' newest venue of Tamarack, ID, Feb. 24-25. NBC and Versus (formerly OLN) will broadcast coverage of the entire series. With the largest overall purse for an American snowboarding series - the 2007 Chevrolet U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix tour boasts prizes totaling $300,000 - along with the best broadcast package for the sport on NBC, America's Olympic network. Rebroadcasts and special presentations of events will be broadcast by OLN (Versus). Plus, in keeping with the tour's tradition, overall winners of the Grand Prix series will be awarded a new Chevrolet truck.
Field sizes will be made up of about 90 men and 40 women in each of the halfpipe contests at all three venues. Only Tamarack will host a SBX event, expected to field about 100 men and 30 women. So register early. "Over the last 10 years the Grand Prix has made every effort to evolve with the sport of snowboarding and to help define the progression and rider pipeline so that the U.S. has a clear path for any person that has the dream to compete at the Olympic level," said Grand Prix Director Eric Webster. "As the sport continues to grow, more riders have the skills to compete at the elite level, therefore the Olympic qualification system will need to accommodate larger competitor numbers. Over the next four years the process of qualifying riders for the Grand Prix and eventually the Olympics will change and evolve, but the philosophy will not - make sure any snowboarder in the U.S. has the opportunity to get to the Olympics regardless of background."
The 2006 series was the hottest on record with Shaun White (Carlsbad, CA) completing the first Grand Prix sweep in the tour's 10-year history en route to an Olympic gold medal run in Italy. Multi-year Grand Prix veterans and former series champions Hannah Teter (Belmont, VT) and Gretchen Bleiler (Aspen, CO) also boosted directly from the Grand Prix to the Olympic podium. "The Grand Prix hosts some of the sweetest contests ever," said Olympic gold medalist Hannah Teter. "You get to compete against the best riders in the world and yet, everyone is just friends. Even though we're gunning for the win, we all cheer for each other. That's what the Grand Prix is all about, having fun and progressing the sport." 2007 Chevrolet U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix schedule:
Dec. 15-16, 2006, Breckenridge Ski Resort: Friday, Dec. 15 - Superpipe Qualifiers Saturday, Dec. 16 - Superpipe Finals and Night Downtown Exhibition
Feb. 2-4, 2007, Mountain Creek Resort: Saturday, Feb. 3 - Superpipe Qualifiers and Night Finals Sunday, Feb. 4 - Slopestyle
Feb. 24-25, 2007, Tamarack: Saturday, Feb. 24 - 22 - Foot Superpipe Qualifiers and Finals Sunday, Feb. 25 - Snowboardcross Time Trials and Heats Constantly pushing the level of riding, the 2007 Grand Prix will host a world-class slopestyle competition at the Mountain Creek stop and the Breckenridge will again build a massive quarterpipe for the floodlit snowmobile tow in exhibition. U.S. NATIONAL SKI HALL OF FAME SELECTS MOSELEY, WORTHINGTON AND PARISIEN ISHPEMING, Mich. (Oct. 7) - Former Olympic and World Cup moguls champion Jony Moseley (Tiburon, CA), ex-aerials and combined world and World Cup champion Trace Worthington (Park City, UT) and Alpine World Ski Championships medalist Julie Parisien (Sugarloaf, ME) have been elected to the U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2006. He retired in 2002 with 18 World Cup victories and also was a two-time U.S. champion. Worthington grew up in the Twin Cities (Plymouth, MN) and then Winter Park, Colo., but was one of the first athletes to move to Park City, Utah, for optimal training opportunities in the early Nineties. He once explained he sometimes couldn't make up his mind, so played hockey and skied in winter. When he decided to concentrate on skiing, he couldn't decide which freestyle event to focus on - acro (then known as ballet), aerials or moguls, "so I did everything." He was the 1986 Junior World Championships gold medalist in aerials but skied in all three events on the World Cup, winning 37 times, including 27 combined wins (blending scores from the three events) and 10 aerials triumphs. He was forced to retire on the eve of the 1997 season by a vertigo-like ailment which - so treacherous for someone who routinely jumped 50 feet or more into the air on his aerials - struck shortly after the '95 season when he became (and remains) the only person to win two gold medals at the same Worlds (aerials, combined). In addition to his World Cup wins, Worthington had six World Cup titles and 11 U.S. championships. Julie Parisien started skiing at 4, following her two older brothers to Lost Valley Ski Area, not far from the family home in Auburn, Maine. "I got tired of going to the babysitter when the family went skiing," she explained, "so I learned to ski." She went through Vermont's Burke Mountain Academy and won the first of three World Cup races when she took the giant slalom during 1991 World Cup Finals at Waterville, N.H.; she was 19. A year later, she started the '93 World Cup season as the No. 1-ranked slalom skier in the world. That winter, she overcame the death of brother J.P. in a hit-and-run auto accident and collected the slalom silver medal at the World Championships in Japan. Parisien retired after the 1994 season, returned to make the 1998 Olympic Team - her third visit to the Winter Games - and re-retired following the '99 season. In addition to her World Championships and World Cup success, Parisien won four U.S. titles plus the bronze medal in super G at the 1989 Junior Worlds. Tom West, president and CEO of the Ski Hall, announced the selections - which were made by a nationwide panel - and said the newest group of inductees brings the number of honored athletes to 349, including ski industry pioneers and other members. The formal induction will be held during the Snowsports Industries America trade show in Las Vegas Jan. 22-24, 2007. www.ussa.org

The GOLD PASS From the US SKI TEAM -Through a partnership with the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA)
WINTER FUN WITH THE U.S. SKI AND SNOWBOARD TEAM GOLD PASS Support Olympic Dreams with the Ultimate Season Pass PARK CITY, Utah (Sept. 19) – The U.S. Ski & Snowboard Team Gold Pass is a golden opportunity providing “rock star” treatment for Pass holders and their friends to more than 260 mountains around the country, making it the ultimate season pass to winter ski and snowboard fun. "The Gold Pass is the best way to have fun supporting the future of the U.S. Ski Team and U.S. Snowboarding," said 2006 Olympic gold medalist Julia Mancuso. “Not only is it the only season pass good at some of the best ski areas in the nation but you're also helping Olympic hopefuls as they pursue their gold medal aspirations." Only Americans send Americans to the Olympics, unlike competing nations, which receive support from their governments. As a fundraiser for the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Team Foundation, the Pass program raises $2 million that helps support the training, development and competition needs of America’s future Olympians making it possible for young athletes to follow in the footsteps of 2006 Olympic gold medalists Ted Ligety, Julia Mancuso, Seth Wescott, Hannah Teter and Shaun White who together won a record five gold medals in skiing and snowboarding for the United States. The Gold Pass is fully transferable – the only such lift ticket program of its kind – allowing friends, family and corporate clients to take full advantage of the Pass. For $7,000, part of which is tax-deductible as a charitable donation, it “is one of skiing’s real bargains.” While most resorts simply scan the Gold Pass and hand you a lift ticket, other areas – including many in Colorado like Vail, Aspen and Beaver Creek allow you to head right to the lift, no ticket needed – just the Pass around your neck. Through a partnership with the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) for more than 30 years, a limited number of Gold Passes are available each season. You can join an elite club of past Gold Pass purchasers like the “patron saint of snowboarding”, Jake Burton Carpenter, founder Burton Snowboards, talk show host Montel Williams, tennis greats Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova, as well as the head of the Heinz Foundation – Teresa Heinz Kerry – who each year requests pass # 57. The latest from Kitzbühel
It is autumn in the Alps, everything is covered in brightly coloured leaves, the sun is shining and my colleagues have decided to make leaf-walking a new Olympic discipline! At the moment we need such energetic activities, too - after all the delicious culinary temptations of the last few weeks. And "Culinary Kitz" is now giving way to still more wine festivals, farmers' markets and so on - an irresistible offering of sins against the body beautiful! Talking about the last few weeks: We would like to say a big thank-you for all the correspondence we received after the last Newsletter and in response to our latest competition. Mails came in from Austria, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Switzerland and many other countries, and we very much enjoyed reading all those lovely stories about Kitz and your holiday experiences there.

Wishing you a wonderful time in the most beautiful of all Alpine resorts,

FIS News
The 2006 South American Cup came to an end last week, with the giant slalom and slalom finals held at Cerro Catedral (ARG). The Simari Birkner siblings (ARG) again dominated the competitions: while Maria Belen was the strongest in both of the ladies’ races, her brother Cristian Javier took the men’s trophies. In the overall SAC rankings, Cristian Javier Simari Birkner claimed the overall men’s crown, as well as the discipline rankings in slalom and giant slalom. Pierre-Emmanuel Dalcin (FRA) became the men’s SAC super-G champion, while Jorge Mandru (CHI) was the best regional athlete. In men’s downhill, there were two ex-aequo winners: Eric Holmer (USA) and Adrien Theaux (FRA), with Maui Gayme (CHI) being the best ‘local’ skier. In the ladies’ standings, Maria Belen Simari Birkner won before her sister Macarena. She also conquered the discipline rankings in slalom and giant slalom, and was the best regional athlete in the downhill standings which were won by Genevieve Simard of Canada. In ladies’ super-G, the discipline title went to Noelle Barahona of Chile. The Australia-New Zealand Continental Cup (ANC) series was completed at Whakapapa Ski Area on Mt Ruapehu (NZE) last week. Unfortunately, only the final slalom races could be held as the mountain was subject to unseasonably warm temperatures and high winds in the latter part of the week, preventing the running of the giant slalom finals. The two slalom events were both won by Jono Brauer (AUS) and Claire Dautherives (FRA). Brauer also won the overall ANC ranking in a supreme fashion, followed by Demian Franzen (AUS) and Tim Café (NZE) in second and third places, respectively. In addition, Brauer took all the discipline rankings, with the exception of giant slalom where he still finished as the best regional skier while Thomas Lanning (USA) won the discipline standings. The ANC ladies’ overall ranking was won by Pauline-Flor Socquet-Clerc of France before her team mate Claire Dautherives and the best ‘local’, Sarah Jarvis (NZE). Socquet-Clerc also won all the discipline rankings. The Mt Ruapehu races completed the highly successful ANC series of 2006, including the first super combined races. In fact, this season was the first time that ANC series winners have been announced in four disciplines during the Southern winter.
