Borssen Ends Schild's Slalom Domination
Kildow looking forward to slalom training
SEMMERING, Austria (Dec. 29) - Sweden's Therese Borssen won her first World Cup race Friday night, capturing a slalom when Marlies Schild of Austria, the first-run leader and unbeaten in three previous slaloms, made a mistake at the end of her final run. Lindsey Kildow (Vail, CO), the only American in the second run, failed to finish.
Borssen, who was third behind Schild in the first SL of the season over Thanksgiving Weekend at the Sirius Satellite Aspen Winternational, had a two-run time of 1:55.15 with Austrian Kathrin Zettel, who had the fastest second run, second (1:55.40). Schild, who had been untouchable in slalom until nearly crashing into a slalom pole near the finish line, was third in 1:55.57.
Kildow, the only U.S. racer to qualify in the 30-degree afternoon sunshine for a second run, straddled a gate under the lights.
"Oh, man, a really tough day. But, y'know, you can talk about positives all you want - and there were a couple today - but at the end of the day," SL/GS Head Coach Chris Knight said, "it's results on paper that count...and tonight we don't have a result. Not a one."
He was pleased with Kildow qualifying for the nighttime second run (i.e., top 30 in the afternoon run) "because Lindsey hasn't had any slalom training at all. She caught an edge in Val d'Isere [France] last week and now this straddle...but we've got a couple of days of slalom training coming up, so that should help her a lot." The schedule for the coming week calls for three SL or giant slalom races.
The next women's race is the Snow Queen Trophy race, another night slalom next Thursday in Zagreb, Croatia, and then the annual GS-slalom pairing Jan. 6-7 in Maribor, Croatia.

20 Inches of Fresh!

The biggest storm of the season so far just rolled through Mammoth and in the past 48 hours we received over 20 inches of fresh! Yesterday the winds were blowing hard but they are starting to die down and over the next couple days, the temperatures will be warmer with sunny skies. The top will most likely open tomorrow or Saturday as the winds permit, which means a couple feet of untracked powder! Need I say more? Thanks to all the new snow, we now have a 36 to 48 inch base of fresh snow. We are operating Broadway Express, Stump Alley Express, Roller coaster, Thunder Bound Express, Chair 7, Chair 8, Discovery Chair, Eagle Express, Canyon Express, Schoolyard Express, Chair 21, Lower Panorama Gondola and the Village Gondola. Gold Rush Express and Chair 20 should be operating soon. All lifts are wind and weather permitting. If the winds die down, we will open even more lifts with access to new terrain. The winds on the lower half of the mountain aren't as strong and should make for some phenomenal skiing and riding. The new snow has also allowed us to open Mammoth Snowmobile Adventures! Let our experienced guides lead you on a journey like no other through miles of powder. Mammoth Snowmobile Adventures is located behind the Yodler at the Main Lodge. FIS NEWS
Mancuso 4th in Semmering Giant Slalom Posts fastest second run to lead U.S. SEMMERING, Austria (Dec. 28) - Olympic champion Julia Mancuso (Olympic Valley, CA) turned-in the fastest second run down a treacherous, icy pitch Thursday and finished fourth in a World Cup giant slalom as racing got rolling again following the Christmas break. Kathrin Zettel, who also won the only other GS this season during the Sirius Satellite Radio Aspen Winternational a month ago in Colorado, finished in 2:09.50, leading an Austrian sweep when first-run leader Marlies Schild ran into trouble at the bottom of her second run and dropped to third place. Mancuso, the only non-Austrian in the top five, finished in 2:09.82. Jessica Kelley (Starksboro, VT), the only other U.S. skier to qualify for the second run, finished 30th. WCSN.com will broadcast streaming video of the race at 2 p.m. ET.
Mancuso was the first skier on course in the morning run and with the icy conditions, conceded she was "a little nervous. It's pretty tough starting first in GS, especially when it's this icy. You don't know what to expect and you don't get a course report" because no teammate has been down the run.
"I definitely could have had a faster first run...but, yeah, I could have gone out, too. I'm totally happy with this," she said.
Women's Head Coach Chris Knight said, "It was definitely not an advantage to run first today. Two forerunners fell over, so Julia didn't get much of an idea what was what...and she really did well to be where she was on that first run. But she had a mistake and a couple of small bobbles on the second run...and yet she still was fastest, so she's coming on hard. It was a really good day for her.
Coach: Kelley building confidence "And then Jess ran first on the second run; she skied it clean but didn't attack like she did on the first run; she had some really good sections...so this is two [GS] races and she's been in the second run each time; that's outstanding for her and should help her confidence. It's a long season and Jess is off to a good start," Knight said.

"We trained GS the last two days and they were good sessions," the coach said.
He said Lindsey Kildow (Vail, CO) was about 15th at her final timing split before she skied off course around 10 gates from the finish. "She sat back and got spun around; you needed to be on the ski today on this ice," he explained. The women complete their annual visit to Semmering, west of Vienna, with a slalom Friday before heading to Zagreb, Croatia, for the Snow Queen Trophy slalom on the night of Jan. 4 and then the yearly World Cup GS/SL weekend Jan. 6-7 in Maribor, Slovenia.

Sullivan Leads U.S. Men in Bormio DH-1
BORMIO, Italy (Dec. 28) - Michael Walchhofer won a World Cup downhill Thursday by one-hundredth of a second, ending a 13-race victory drought for the Austrians - a streak that included four wins by American racers. Top U.S. skier behind Walchhofer was Marco Sullivan (Squaw Valley, CA) in 13th place.
Racing resumed after the Christmas break with a makeup for a downhill lost earlier in the month in Val d Isere, France, because of poor snow. Walchhofer took the lead for good on the last section of the 3K Stelvio course and was timed in 1:51.90 for his ninth World Cup win. World Cup DH points leader Didier Cuche of Switzerland was runnerup by the narrowest of margins. Sullivan's time was 1:53.11 in the sunshine and 32-degree weather.
The men race a second downhill in Bormio Friday and then the men's tour has another week's break before racing a giant slalom and slalom Jan. 6-7 in Adelboden, Switzerland.

With Tuesday’s winner Julia Mancuso in 2nd, USA took two podium places for a second straight day on the technical Oreiller-Killy course. At Hinterstoder (AUT), Bode Miller won his third World Cup race this season by taking the super-G. In the last World Cup competition before the Holidays, Aksel Lund Svindal (NOR) - who won the the giant slalom in Hinterstoder - became the second man this season to win more than one World Cup event. In heavy fog, he edged Canadian Francois Bourque off the top step of the podium and regained the lead in the overall standings from Bode Miller. Despite enormous efforts by the local organizing committee, the first two Stages at Nove Mesto na Morave (CZE), planned for 29th and 30th of December, had to be cancelled due to lack of snow.

The athletes will have optimal conditions for the opening Stage and the premiere of the Viessmann FIS Cross-Country World Cup at the world-famous Olympic Stadium in Munich. The snow situation at the other Tour venues looks positive, too. Almost 170 athletes (65 ladies and more than 90 men) representing 22 nations have been registered for the Tour, including all the World Cup leaders. On the ladies’ side, Marit Bjoergen (NOR) skipped the pre-Christmas World Cups to prepare for the Tour, one of her main season goals. Katarina Neumannova (CZE) has set her eyes on the overall World Cup crystal globe this year and will surely be someone to reckon with, as will be current World Cup leader Virpi Kuitunen (FIN) and the 2006 double Olympic Champion from Turin, Estonia’s Kristina Smigun, just to mention a few. For the men, the possible winners are too many to count. The Norwegian team, led by current World Cup leader Eldar Roenning, is bound to be strong, as will be the young Russian team including Olympic champion Eugeni Dementiev. Last year’s World Cup champion Tobias Angerer (GER) seems to be getting in shape right in time for the Tour, too. But one should not forget Vincent Vittoz (FRA), Anders Soedergren (SWE), Pietro Piller Cottrer (ITA), amongst others. The final decision of the first Viessmann FIS Tour de Ski performance by Craft Sportswear will fall on the Summit of Cross-Country, at the top of the Final Climb on Alpe Cermis on Sunday, 7th January.

The 55th Jack Wolfskin Four-Hills-Tournament, which starts on 30th December in Oberstdorf (GER), promises to be exciting. The current World Cup leader is Simon Ammann, the 25-year old double 2002 Olympic Champion from Salt Lake City. But right on his heels follow Anders Jacobsen (21; NOR) and 2006 Junior World Champion Gregor Schlierenzauer (16; AUT), two younger athletes who only emerged on the top of the podium this season. These two ‘young wild things’ and Kuusamo winner Arttu Lappi (FIN) are among those who are going to challenge Ammann and last year's ex-aequo tournament winners Janne Ahonen (FIN) and Jakub Janda (CZE). But there are others who could claim the podium at this traditional event: Adam Malysz (POL), Thomas Morgenstern (AUT), the double Olympic Champion of Torino 2006, or Andreas Kuettel (SUI), 4th both in last year’s tournament and in the current World Cup ranking

FIS
PARK CITY, Utah (Dec. 22) - The string of nine World Cup alpine podiums by five U.S. skiers in six days, including the first victory of their career for Olympic champion Julia Mancuso (Olympic Valley, CA) and Steven Nyman (Provo, UT), is unprecedented for the U.S. Ski Team.

U.S. Alpine Director Jesse Hunt pointed to the fact the podiums came across-the-board in all disciplines - slalom, GS, super G and downhill. "I think the momentum is definitely in our favor now, and it's showing. The athletes are feeding off each other now; when you're going 80 miles an hour [during stretches of a downhill], you need to have confidence and you need to believe. Our athletes have that little edge and confidence when their teammates are breaking through and doing well," Hunt said.

- Five different U.S. skiers, not one or two having a great series of results

- First World Cup wins for Steven Nyman (Provo, UT) and Olympic giant slalom gold medalist Julia Mancuso (Olympic Valley, CA), each of whom won in downhill

- Lindsey Kildow (Vail, CO) earned her fourth and fifth podiums of the season, winning the second Val d'Isere downhill Wednesday after finishing third Tuesday in the first Val d'Isere downhill, as she moved past childhood idol Picabo Street with 18 World Cup podiums

- This is the first time that two U.S. women have stood on the podium together since Kildow and Mancuso went 2-3 in super G at Cortina, Italy, on Jan. 27, 2006. Kildow also doubled up with Caroline Lalive (Steamboat Springs, CO) with a 1-2 finish in downhill at Val d'Isere, France, on Dec. 17, 2005.

- Two-time Olympian Marco Sullivan (Squaw Valley, CA), who was sidelined two years after tearing ligaments in his left knee, missed his first podium by one-hundredth of a second, finishing fourth in the downhill Saturday, Dec. 16 in Val Gardena, Italy

- Miller's victory Wednesday in super G in Hinterstoder, Austria, was the 24th of his career, moving him closer to Phil Mahre and his U.S. mark of 27 World Cup wins

- After being stymied in Val Gardena for decades (two third-place finishes since the World Cup first came there in the 1969 season - Mike Lafferty in 1972, AJ Kitt in '92), U.S. men broke through for two wins in 24 hours

- As of Dec. 21, the U.S. men have three skiers ranked in the World Cup top 10 overall - Miller second, Ted Ligety sixth and Nyman 10th. The U.S. women have two - Kildow (fourth) and Mancuso (seventh) Current U.S. podiums streak

Champagne Powder® Snow day, folks! Sure we've had a bigger storm than this, but this morning was what dreams are made of - with the temp at a chilly 8 and easily fifteen inches by 8am, this snow is perfect. Did you hear me?? PERFECT! Shhhh, and it's still snowing... Welcome to winter my friends, today it's OFFICIALLY here. Although we snowlovers have seemingly had our winter since, well, September, if I remember correctly, today marks the first actual day of winter. And Ski Town USA® is welcoming it the right way! The locals got up early, skipped work, called in their powder clauses, and began howling like wolves earlier than usual. We started out with the lucky first chair on Storm Peak Express, licking up a completely untracked powder field on Storm Face, traversing over to Cyclone: heavenly and up past my knees!! OOOHOO, with some unnoticeable bumps underneath we had no problem soaring like birds skimming the sea's surface down this one. Too nice to pass again, we looped back down for another try, this time down Storm to the meadow next to Four Points, and over to Hurricane. Ok, these bumps were a little more to be reckoned with!! But oh, so deep,

Stiegler 6th in Val d'Isere Slalom
Three Americans in second run VAL D ISERE, France (Dec. 21) - Resi Stiegler (Jackson Hole, WY) finished sixth Thursday in a World Cup slalom as the record-breaking U.S. string of World Cup top-3 results came to an end after seven consecutive men's and women's races.

Marlies Schild of Austria stayed unbeaten after three slaloms, taking the 11th win of her career in 1:46.15; German Annemarie Gerg was second in 1:46.36.

Stiegler, third behind Schild in the first run, finished in 1:46.94 while Kaylin Richardson (Edina, MN) was 23rd. Lindsey Kildow (Vail, CO), fourth in the first run after winning a downhill Wednesday and finishing third in one Tuesday, failed to finish her second run. Only three U.S. skiers raced.

"Three-four [Stiegler third, Kildow fourth] after that first run - we haven't been in that situation for over a year and these girls have never been in that position, but they weren't intimidated. It was good to see them charging on that second run," SL/GS Head Coach Chris Knight said.

"The last time like this was only one athlete, so to have two in there at the start of the second run, and a third also qualifying, was outstanding. Kaylin's only qualified one other time [for second run], and after two days of racing downhill which isn't her big event, this was a good day for her, too. A lot of others didn't make that transition from downhill to slalom, but all three of our girls did it nicely.

"Resi, especially, and Lindsey, too, have very fast turns in slalom but Lindsey's been through so much the previous two days," Knight said, "and she was still rolling...but as great as those podiums are, they also can be an emotional drain. I'm proud of the way all of them performed today."

Coming into Thursday's races, U.S. men and women were on the hottest streak in U.S. Ski Team history with nine podiums - including five victories - in seven straight races over six days. The slalom was a makeup for one lost in Megeve, France, because of poor snow conditions caused by the snow drought in central Europe.

Knight said course crews had "done an outstanding job preparing the course. They did a great job on the top of the hill considering until yesterday there wasn't much, but it set-up well during the night. The girls were saying they couldn't quite release their ski the way they wanted on the bottom flat because the snow was pretty grippy...but we're glad to get the race, and now we'll relax for Christmas."

After time off for the holiday, the women regroup for GS/SL races Dec. 28-29 in Semmering, Austria. "We're only down one race, the opener in Soelden [a giant slalom], so we're in pretty good shape that way," Knight said, "but there's almost no training space anywhere, and they'll make decisions next week on Zagreb [night slalom Jan. 4 in the Croatian capital] and Maribor [GS/SL Jan. 6-7 in Slovenia]."

SkiStar Invitational 17 februrary 2007
In the late 70’s and in the 80’s when Ingemar Stenmark was ski racing, Sweden would grind to a halt and watch. School lessons took a break and the TV was brought in, at work everyone gathered in front of the screen and on the streets you could see a crowd outside every shop with a TV in the window.
Stenmark and his competitors became heroes, well known not only in their own countries but also throughout the world. The skiing tradition has always been great in Sweden, and now with Åre yet again hosting the World Championship, we will get the chance to see these legends compete another time.
Skistar Invitational is a charity race with the intention to raise funds and awareness of Active Life Foundation. A fund started by the Swedish skier Thomas Fogdö, The Active Life Foundation helps injured athletes get back to an active life. Ingemar Stenmark and the rest of the legends will star in this race without any economical compensation in support Active Life and its work.
The race is free to watch!!
Before and during the race there will be actvities set up to give everyone a chance to contribute to, and support Active Life Foundation.

FIS News
VAL D ISERE, France (Dec. 19) - Olympic giant slalom champion Julia Mancuso (Olympic Valley, CA), healthy after a weekend stomach illness, earned her first World Cup victory Tuesday, winning a downhill with teammate Lindsey Kildow (Vail, CO) in third place.
Racing in sunny, 15-degree weather, Mancuso tore down the 2.5K Oreiller Killy track to finish in 1:38.93 with Renate Goetchl of Austria in second place at 1:39.36. Kildow, who won here a year ago with Caroline Lalive (Steamboat Springs, CO) in second place, completed the podium in 1:39.47 for the 51st running of Val d'Isere's Criterium of the First Snow.
"I thought I had a pretty sweet run but you never really know. In ski racing you never really know," Mancuso said. As she waited in the race-leader box at the finish, she said, "I kept telling myself, ‘Get it over with'...Renate and Lindsey had leading splits up top, but then they had a bobble or something toward the bottom, so that made this pretty sweet...
Nyman's advice was spot-on "I felt pretty good the whole way down, but there are definitely places where I could have been more dynamic. My skis felt smooth and I can't think of any particular mistake."
She thanked Steve Nyman (Provo, UT), who won a downhill Saturday in Val Gardena, Italy. She called to congratulate him "and he inspired me. He gave me some good tips and told me that my skiing was awesome, so I had to do it! Thanks, Steve," she laughed.
The win comes as an early Christmas present, Mancuso said. "My victory happened just on time, before Christmas, which is good so my family will come over and celebrate this with me."
Kildow and Mancuso were both sick with stomach flu over the weekend in Reiteralm, Austria. Kildow missed Friday's super combined and skied out in a super G Saturday while Mancuso, noting she probably shouldn't have raced because of the stomach bug, held it together and she tied for 18th in the SG. They traveled Sunday, trained Monday - Kildow didn't finish her run - and raced Tuesday.
The women run another downhill Wednesday, this one a makeup from St. Moritz, Switzerland, because of poor snow. Thursday, they head into the holidays break with a slalom.

RED LODGE Mountain
It seems that the weather in winters past has encouraged the residents of Montana to put on a Hawaiian shirt and get a suntan instead of putting on their skis and hitting the slopes. This winter seems to be no different with warm temperatures and a lack of snow fall. So, if you are dreaming of a white Christmas and are discouraged by your prospects there is one place that you can find that key ingredient; snow. That’s up at Red Lodge Mountain Resort where they are doing their best to battle Mother Nature’s winter heat wave. Instead of setting back and rolling over, Red Lodge Mountain is making its own white Christmas with some help from modern technology, hard work and a smile that can take the hum bug out of anyone’s heart. If you’re looking for something fun to do over the Christmas Holidays Red Lodge Mountain has you covered. You can come up with the entire family and find something for everyone. The Terrain Park is open for those who are preparing themselves for the X-games. There are tons of fun things for kids and kids at heart to do; including making decorations, finding Santa on the Ski Hill, and listening to Mother Christmas tell Christmas stories. To take some stress off the cook in your family Red Lodge Mountain is also ready to help feed your family on Christmas Day. There is a reasonably priced buffet at the Red Lodge Golf Course Club House from 2-8pm. They are also offering many different deals to allow skiers to save money, such as the Christmas Eve Food Drive. If you bring up five nonperishable food items they will match your donation with a $25 ticket. The food that is donated goes to Beartooth Cupboards food bank and five dollars of every ticket sold goes to the Eagle Mount adaptive ski program. And finally for the ski bum, many runs of various difficulties are open on the lower half of the mountain and you are sure to find something that matches your skills. And if you are worried about the bottom of your skis, don’t worry they have that covered too. Casey Hill, Snowmaking Supervisor and his Snowmakers are working every cold weather hour they can to pump as much snow out on the slopes with the resorts vast snowmaking system. New runs are opening by the week due to the hard, cold and lonely hours that these snowmakers are putting in. Currently they are working their way up Red Lodge Mountain’s signature run Lazy M, which is no small job. The optimal condition for making snow is 20 degrees or less with low humidity, but the colder it gets the better the quality snow is. Manmade snow has a poor reputation of being hard and icy, and at times it can be. But with help from updated technology and a great deal of pride in their man made snow quality Red Lodge Mountain puts out an excellent product. A testament to the quality of the snow came from an old pro at making snow, Carl Laco of SMI. Carl has been making snow for much of his life at a wide range of places from Terry Peak in Deadwood, South Dakota to Teton Village at Jackson Hole, Wyoming. One could say that he might even know man made snow better than he knows real snow. Last week he was up at Red Lodge Mountain helping Casey Hill out with some pointers and just checking out the operation. His final conclusion was that Red Lodge Mountain Resort puts out some of the best man made snow that he has ever seen.
The Resort is so confident with their Holiday Cheer and snow quality that they are ready to give it away for free. Starting December 22nd if you come up and buy a full day pass they’ll give you a free full day pass with an equal value to use from January 2nd to February 16th (with one blackout date on Martin Luther King Jr. weekend). This offer is good to the first 400 people who come up to the ticket window each day. The Resort is giving away in total 1600 days of free skiing, so hurry up and get here while the supplies last. Just consider it a Christmas present from Red Lodge Mountain Resort and enjoy that White Christmas you are dreaming of. Ligety 2nd - Fourth Straight U.S. Podium Miller, Ligety, Nyman in World Cup top seven
ALTA BADIA, Italy (Dec. 18) - In an historic moment, Olympic champion Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) gave the U.S. men's alpine team a World Cup podium finish for the fourth consecutive day, finishing second in a slalom. Jimmy Cochran (Keene, NH) was 13th.
Ligety's podium, his second of the season, marks the first time U.S. skiers have been on a World Cup podium in four alpine races in four days. U.S. men took five World Cup podiums a year ago - but they were in three straight races over three days. But never 4-for-4...until Monday. Ligety, third in a giant slalom Dec. 2 at the VISA Birds of Prey races in Beaver Creek, CO, had a two-run time of 1:44.70 while Cochran turned in the second-fastest final run to move up 14 places for his second top-15 of the winter (1:45.47). When first-run leader Stephane Tissot of France crashed midway through his second run, Sweden's Markus Larsson won in 1:44.51. Snowfall in the morning and then lighter snow for the second run caused flat light for the racers.
WCSN.com will broadcast same-day video streaming beginning at 2 p.m. ET. Bode Miller (Bretton Woods, NH), who kicked off the momentous surge by the American men when he won the Val Gardena super G Friday, missed a gate Monday on the first run of slalom. Saturday, Steven Nyman (Provo, UT) won the 50th Saslong Classic downhill, also in Val Gardena, and Miller was back on the podium Sunday, finishing second in a giant slalom behind Kalle Palander of Finland.
After 12 World Cup races, three U.S. men are in the top seven in the overall points - Miller in third place, Ligety in fifth and Nyman in seventh.
First run sets up Ligety's podium Ligety, hobbled earlier this season by a broken bone in his right hand, which made it tough for him to pole plant in slalom, was fourth in the first run Monday behind Tissot. His attacking first run set the stage for his podium as he skied methodically through the tough conditions on the final course. "My slalom's been a little bit of a struggle lately and I needed this boost of confidence. It's a really good day," Ligety said. "My hand's getting better every day. I still tape it up to keep it stable, but I'm even slowly getting to the point where I can make my pole plants" which can be so important in slalom.
The Olympic combined gold medalist last February - also in Italy - said the surge by the U.S. men has been contagious. "It's awesome, especially with Nyman the other day. It was so cool to watch him. I've been skiing with him since I was 13 and to see him come through and get that first World Cup win definitely was awesome. "Conditions were really tough because it rained last night and then snowed a little bit," McNichol added, "and then we had a little bit for the first, so a little new snow on top of the rain makes that snow rough, and it was tough. Second run was much better because it was slipped off and the snow got to sit with the cold air on it." The men's schedule resumes Wednesday with a super G in Hinterstoder, Austria, followed by a giant slalom Thursday leading into the Christmas break. Some of the athletes will take time at the men's new training base in Paganella, Italy - also in the Dolomites - before the speed skiers head to Bormio for the traditional downhill Dec. 29. Third straight U.S. speed victory

VAL GARDENA, Italy (Dec. 16) - Olympian Steven Nyman (Provo, UT), overcoming training troubles and riding "magic sticks," tore through the gnarly Saslong speed course Saturday to win the first World Cup of his career, edging Swiss veteran Didier Cuche by two-hundredths of a second. Marco Sullivan (Squaw Valley, CA) was fourth, just .01 off the podium, with Bode Miller (Bretton Woods, NH) in 14th place.
It marked an unprecedented third consecutive World Cup speed victory by an American, combining Nyman's triumph with Miller's wins at the VISA Birds of Prey downhill Dec. 1 in Beaver Creek, CO, (with Nyman third for his first World Cup podium) and Friday's super G in Val Gardena.
The men move on to Alta Badia for a giant slalom Sunday followed by a slalom Monday.

FIS NEWS
REITERALM, Austria (Dec. 15) - Resi Stiegler (Jackson Hole, WY) laid down the fifth-fastest slalom run Friday and moved up to 11th place in super combined Friday leading two other U.S. skiers into World Cup points. Lindsey Kildow (Vail, CO) was sidelined by a stomach flu.
Austrians, led by Marlies Schild, who won the first two slaloms of the season, swept the top four places. Schild's time for one run of a shortened downhill and a lone slalom run was 2:13.69.
Stiegler, who was 31st in the super G, had a combined time of 2:16.00 and advanced 20 places in the final standings. Kaylin Richardson (Edina, MN) finished 15th and Julia Mancuso (Olympic Valley, CA), getting stronger after hip surgery for chronic problems during the summer, was 16th. Stacey Cook (Mammoth Mountain, CA) finished just out of the points, in 33rd place in the makeup race from then-snowless St. Moritz, Switzerland, earlier this month.
"Resi did a great job in the slalom, especially from 31st start. She was very impressive with that speed," Head Coach Patrick Riml said. "We know she's fast in slalom and she's showing she definitely can be a contender in combined.
"Julia had a great super G [fourth] and she started great in the slalom, but she got caught up in a hairpin section and couldn't find her rhythm after that...we're tweaking a few things with her, and she's getting back on track," Riml said. "And Kaylin had a solid run of slalom, and super G's a little easier for her - she needs more experience in downhill, so this worked well. She's such a good slalom skier and she can contend in combined, too."
Kildow was sick all day Thursday, he said, but felt better before Friday's race. "We felt it was better that she didn't ski today and got totally healthy. It was tough to miss this one, but tomorrow's another super G and then next week she's got some downhills in Val d'Isere - and she won there last year, so we want Lindsey strong...and then she'll get back into it." He said the course "was in perfect shape. It was sunny and the snow was rock hard underneath, so the guys had some tough conditions last week for their super combined, but we got a great track...and it should be like that again tomorrow."
The women run the second super G of the season Saturday - which replaces one lost race in Val d Isere, France - and then have two downhills and a slalom, starting Tuesday, in Val d'Isere; the second downhill makes up for one lost in St. Moritz and the slalom is a pickup from Megeve, France.

VAL GARDENA, Italy (Dec. 15) -
Reigning super G world champion Bode Miller (Bretton Woods, NH) nailed the top section and kept ripping down the Saslong course Friday to win a World Cup super G, the 23rd victory of his career and first win at Val Gardena. Steven Nyman (Provo, UT) was 10th.
WCSN.com will broadcast same-day video streaming beginning at 4 p.m. ET.

Miller, who drew closer to Phil Mahre's U.S. record of 27 World Cup wins finished in 1:32.35 with Austrian Christoph Gruber second in 1:32.99. Nyman's time in the sunny 30-degree weather was 1:33.45 for the 2.4K course; he and Swiss skier Silvan Zurbriggen moved up a spot when Hermann Maier of Austria was disqualified.

After taking a half-second lead at the top split, Miller - whose best previous finish in Val Gardena was fourth in a super G two years ago - lost a bit in the mid-section and then piled-on four-tenths of a second on the final section for the impressive victory. It's the fourth super G win of his career, his first since tying then-teammate Daron Rahlves in the SG at World Cup Finals last March in Are, Sweden, scene of this season's FIS World Championships in February.
"I skied it smart. I didn't risk too much," Miller said. "It was a perfect run, top to bottom...definitely the best run this season for me, not just in races but including training runs, too." He said he was confident and "always had the right direction. I had a good inspection [with Coach John McBride] and was confident all the way. I had a good line.

"I wasn't as much on the edge as usual. I knew I had to ski the right line, and I got it." He said super G has always been one of his favorite disciplines although he feels he's skiing faster at the moment in giant slalom.
"Not too bad," said DH/SG Head Coach Chris Brigham. "Bode skied incredibly well on the top part, which was difficult today, and he carried it on down the hill. He skied like we known he can ski; his equipment was working and he skied well...and Steven had a little trouble on the top part, but he skied very well after that. He's picking up confidence in every race. He's coming!" He added, "Bode should be fun to watch in the downhill tomorrow after today's performance. He'll be more confident in his equipment and his skiing."

Brigham praised the course crew for "a fantastic job. They've done an amazing job getting this place ready; they were saying five or six days ago it wouldn't even be close, but the track was pretty close to perfect. It's amazing, considering the little snow they've gotten in so much of Europe. This was prepared almost as well as they normally prepare it." The best previous U.S. results in Val Gardena were a third-place showings in downhill by Mike Lafferty behind Swiss great Bernhard Russi in March 1972 and by AJ Kitt behind another Swiss Franz Heinzer early in the '92 season. "This was a great day for Bode, a good day for the team," Brigham said.
The men race downhill Saturday and then move on for their traditional stop in Alta Badia with a giant slalom Sunday and a slalom Monday.

It's hard to go wrong when you have twelve inches of new snow on every slope of the mountain. I tried to hit as much as possible yesterday, from Sleeping Indian to Ampitheater to the Gondola line. The snow was outstanding - I threw an enormous powder spray directly into my face as I came out of the trees directly under Casper liftline and heard hoots of delight from the chairlift above. Thunder opened mid-afternoon, providing fresh snow late in the day.

Periods of snow, mainly before 3pm. Temperature rising to near 34 by noon, then falling to around 26 during the remainder of the day. Breezy, with a southwest wind 16 to 19 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 4 to 6 inches possible in the mountains. Lifts Open: 5 of 11

US Snowboarding News

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (Dec. 14) - U.S. Snowboarding and The Arctic Challenge have partnered to add the Chevrolet U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix as the only North American qualifier to The Oakley Arctic Challenge (TAC) this season. The top three riders from the Saturday, Dec. 16 Paul Mitchell Progression Session, featuring a 30-foot quarterpipe in downtown Breckenridge, will receive entry into the prestigious event hosted by snowboarding icon Terje Haakonsen in Norway this March.
"To be able to team up with The Arctic Challenge and Oakley is huge for U.S. Snowboarding and the Grand Prix," said Jeremy Forster, U.S. Snowboarding program director. "It validates that we are putting on some of the highest level contests that focus on providing the riders the best venues and overall contest experience. Partnering with TAC along with Mountain Creek being a 5-star TTR (Ticket to Ride) event this season continues to raise the level of the Grand Prix series."
Luke Mitrani (Mammoth Lakes, CA) highlighted the event last December with a towering method air of 31-feet above the lip of the quarterpipe via snowmobile tow-in, sending him 61-feet above the parking lot packed with thousands of fans.
Grand Prix venue designer Pat Malendoski of Planet Snow Designs will again build the feature in downtown Breckenridge located in the Miners Parking Lot right in the middle of downtown Breckenridge. All the snow for the event has been trucked in and the quarterpipe is once again anticipated to be right about 30-feet high. Plus in keeping with the Grand Prix tradition of combining entertainment with the world's best snowboarding competition, DJ Roots and DJ Vajra will perform live during and after the downtown exhibition.
"One of the goals of the Grand Prix is to host events that truly push the progression of the sport of snowboarding. Having the event be a qualifier for The Arctic Challenge legitimizes this goal and helps to solidify the Grand Prix as the premier snowboarding series in North America," said Grand Prix Director Eric Webster.
"There are two elements that must be in place to make this year's TAC event a true success: First, the perfect arena and second, the ultimate rider list. By partnering with an exclusive group of events as the Grand Prix in Breckenridge, we know we're getting the best riders out there." Henning Andersen, CEO of TAC said.
A total of 24 riders will receive entry into TAC with further qualifiers taking place in Europe and Scandinavia in January and February. TAC opens Monday, Feb. 26, giving riders six days to session the quarterpipe prior to the finals on Saturday, March 3.

SKIING´S NEXT GENERATION” Gerhard Blöchl (double German master 2004, olympia participant 2006) published briefly after the olympic plays 2006 together with its brother its new book “new School - SKIING´S NEXT GENERATION”. Since his first book with the title became “new School fascination on Skiern” within short time the best-seller of the publishing house, Gerhard, this decided with his American friend David Babic, member US of the ski team to revise. Snow Alert -Crystal Mountain - Wa,& Lake Tahoe basin

FIS
- FIS World Cups continue ... more Still waiting for winter in Europe: With the winter still taking its time to settle in, changes continued to be necessary in some FIS World Cup calendars while others are progressing right on schedule. There is enough snow in La Clusaz (FRA) for the first period’s last Viessmann FIS World Cup Cross-Country events scheduled for this weekend. There is also sufficient snow in Engelberg where the e.on ruhrgas FIS World Cup Ski Jumping is continuing according to the calendar. The Warsteiner FIS World Cup Nordic Combined races in Ramsau (AUT) – a mass start and a hurricane sprint – will also go ahead as planned.

It was Team China that dominated the opening aerials competitions of the Freestyle FIS World Cup held at the Beidahu ski resort in north-eastern China on 9th-10th December. At the first event of the season, China claimed four of the six podium places led by national favorite Nina Li who won the ladies’ competition ahead of three of her team mates. In the men’s competition, the first-ever Chinese male gold medalist in the Olympic Winter Games, Han Xiaopeng, who took gold in Turin ranked second behind Ryan St. Onge (USA) and ahead of Jeff Bean (CAN). On Sunday, Nina Li won again, ahead of the Australian veteran Jacqui Cooper and her team mate Xu Mengtao, only 16 years old. With full points from the opening weekend, Li has established a strong lead in the overall rankings. In the men's second event, Canada's Steve Omischl, 2004 aerials FIS World Cup champion, took his 27th career podium. He ranked clearly ahead of two Belorussian athletes, Timofei Slivets and Alexei Grishin. Omischl also garnered the overall World Cup leader's yellow jersey. Jilin Province, the host of the 2006-2007 Bosideng Freestyle FIS World Cup, will also stage the ski and snowboard competitions during the 6th Asian Winter Games in January 2007. The Freestyle FIS aerials World Cup will continue in Mt. Gabriel (CAN) on January 7th, 2007.

The second parallel giant slalom in the NOKIA Snowboard FIS World Cup 2006/2007, held at Kronplatz/San Vigilio di Marebbe (ITA) today, ended with two first-time winners. On the ladies’ side, Isabella Dal Balcon (ITA) secured her career’s premiere World Cup win. In the men’s race, Rok Flander of Slovenia also took his first career victory ahead of Siegfried Grabner of Austria. The strong Slovenian performance was underscored by Isidor Sustersic in 4th place.

The moguls and ski cross season openers in the Freestyle FIS World Cup scheduled for Tignes (FRA) on 14th, Kreischberg (AUT) on 17th and in La Plagne (AUT) on 20th December had to be cancelled due to the mild weather. Considerations are being taken to reschedule the events later on in the season. In the NOKIA Snowboard FIS World Cup, the parallel slalom events in Bad Gastein (AUT) and Kranjska Gora (SLO) that were scheduled for 16th and 21st December, respectively, were also cancelled due to the mild temperatures and insufficient snow.

One month to go: Arosa 2007
The 7th FIS Snowboard World Championships will kick off in Arosa (SUI) in exactly one month’s time, on Saturday 13th January, with the qualification runs for snowboardcross. The SBX finals will be held on 14th January, while the finals for the parallel events will take place on 16th (parallel giant slalom) and 17th (parallel slalom) and the finals for the freestylers on Friday, 19th (big air) and Saturday, 20th January (half-pipe). This is the first time that the FIS Snowboard Championships have been hosted in Switzerland. Situated at 1800m altitude in the Schanfigg valley, in canton of Grisons, where the highest peaks reach over 2800m above sea level, Arosa and its infrastructure servicing more than 70km of terrain is a perfect host resort. As a snowboard event host, Arosa is no newcomer since it has staged three NOKIA FIS World Cup stops including the finals in 2003. What’s more, the set-up for the activity is ideal from the spectators’ perspective as everything will take place within just a few hundred meters. In the finish area at the bottom of the snowboardcross, giant slalom and slalom courses, there will be a big screen for the spectators to catch all the action as the athletes come down the course. Just a stone’s throw away is the big air finish area where spectators can admire the competitors as they try to best each other with aerial acrobatics.

In addition to sporting performances, the OC is planning a festival in the town of Arosa with live music every night and other activities as of 10th January. The entire village is bound to rock for a minimum of ten days! How to get there: Arosa is easily accessible via the Zurich international airport, and from there by car or train. By car get on the A3 towards Sihlholzbrucke and then take Exit 16 towards Chur-Nord/Arosa. From there, follow the signs to Arosa up the winding road for approximately 30km. By train take the intercity train to Chur and then change to the Rhaetian railway to Arosa (approx. 60 minutes). The reigning 2005 World Champions from Whistler (CAN)

USSA
INVERMERE, B.C. (Dec. 12) - Chelsea Marshall (Pittsfield, VT) won a NorAm super G in the morning at Panorama Ski Area and Caitlin Ciccone (Bethlehem, NH) completed a rare two-race sweep by Americans as she won the completion of a super combined event in the afternoon. While World Cup super combined events are a total time for the speed leg and one run of slalom, NorAm officials have agreed that any super combined will include separate scoring for the speed race plus the aggregate time for the speed race - whether it's downhill or super G - and the lone run of slalom.
Tuesday, Marshall won the super G in 1:26.66 with Leanne Smith (Conway, NH) - who was second Monday behind Kaylin Richardson (Edina, MN) in the opening SG - was second again, this time in 1:27.44. Ciccone was fifth in the super G. Later, after the single slalom run, Ciccone had the fastest combined time (2:16.39) with Marshall holding onto second place at 2:16.65. Smith completed the podium (2:17.60) as U.S. women took the top five places and were 10 of the 11 fastest skiers even though defending NorAm SG champion Megan McJames (Park City, UT) and Keely Kelleher (Big Sky, MT) skied off course while they were leading. "Conditions were perfect and the girls really went at it," said U.S. Coach Jim Pollok. "[Monday] we had a super G course that focused on the ‘super' - pretty straight and really fast. Today, the course focused on the ‘G' and was technical, like a giant slalom, so they had two very different courses and different challenges...and they handled it well. McJames and Kelleher were 1-2 at the split when they went out, but we saw some good racing and the others did well."
The NorAm schedule at Panorama swings Wednesday to the men with another super G and super combined with a super G Thursday.

The rime ice on Storm Peak's lift towers gave me a chill that I didn't actually feel in the air, a sign of a cold night. Up top one could not even read the trail signs, you had to read other signs - like the line of hikers heading to the top of Mt. Werner in search of fresh stashes in the steeps and trees.

We took the low road, traversing to the Ridge across a thick soft carpet beyond the tracks set before us. I'd imagine the hikers were rewarded more and rightfully so, although we found our stash, enough fresh powder to make several turns sometimes sliding above a windswept slope, turning into a creamy turn. We dropped into the trees skier's right of Flying Z, finding a few untouched chutes of deeper powder that the wind had not reached. Slow even turns, soft and sweet through a quiet forest.

Back to civilization, we then headed to the Sundown side dropping into Priest Creek lift line, where only a few had ventured. Here's where I felt my rhythm, turn linking to turn with the smooth powder, more bottomless here, flexing below my boards.

US SNOWBOARD TEAM

Olympic Medalists Headline '07 U.S. Roster v PARK CITY, Utah (Dec. 12) - Olympic medalists Hannah Teter (Belmont, VT), Seth Wescott (Carrabassett Valley, ME), Gretchen Bleiler (Aspen, CO) and Lindsey Jacobellis (Stratton Mountain, VT) headline a talent-packed group of 45 riders on the 2007 U.S. Snowboarding roster that also includes talented riders Shaun Palmer (South Lake Tahoe, CA), plus X Games medalists Steve Fisher (Breckenridge, CO) and Scotty Lago (Seabrook, NH) to name a few, announced U.S. Snowboarding Program Director Jeremy Forster.
"U.S. Snowboarding is in a really strong position as we begin the journey towards Vancouver 2010," said Forster. "We are taking one year at a time and won't get ahead of ourselves, but the overall goal will remain the same - putting U.S. riders on the Olympic podium" Carrying the momentum home from Italy, where U.S. Snowboarding accounted for a record seven medals including three gold, the 2007 Team is a solid mix of veterans and up-and-coming young riders eager to place their stamp on the international scene and expand the impact of snowboarding.
Peter Foley, who has been head coach since the first team was named for the 1994-95 winter, remains as head coach for U.S. Snowboarding and will again lead the snowboardcross program with the help of former Team rider Jeff Archibald. The halfpipe riders will be coached by Mike Jankowski, who stepped up as head coach when Bud Keene retired from national coaching to focus on other U.S. Snowboarding projects in the spring. Jankowski is joined by 2006 Olympic assistant coach Rick Bower, a former World Champion and U.S. Team rider. Steve Persons takes over the Alpine Head Coach job, replacing retiring coach Jan Wengelin, and will be assisted by Hans Joerg Berger, who had been coaching at the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club for the past few seasons.
Similar to last season, this year's halfpipe riders are divided into two groups - the Pro Team and the Rookie Team. Forster said this categorization of the halfpipe program is similar to typical industry team's structure and better reflects the riders' stature in the competitive halfpipe culture.

Ligety Rips to 4th in Super Combined
Moves up 14 places in slalom

REITERALM, Austria (Dec. 10) - Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) turned in the second-fastest slalom run Sunday and moved up 14 places to tie for fourth in a super combined won by slalom world champion Ivica Kostelic of Croatia. Steve Nyman (Provo, UT) was 15th and Bode Miller (Bretton Woods, NH) skied out in the super G portion.
The race was moved from Val d Isere, France, because of poor snow conditions. It mixed a super G and one run of slalom. Kostelic finished in a total time of 2:08.90 with Ligety, 23rd in the super G, tied for fourth with Swede Hans Olsson at 2:10.44 as the World Cup schedule resumed after relocation from snow-starved Val d Isere, France.
"My super G was pretty good - and it was a rugged super G - but my slalom's still a work in progress," Ligety said, referring to a broken right hand, which is healing and getting stronger, "but I'm happy. The super G was bumpy, for sure.
"There was a little bit of snow and it made the frozen snow underneath; pretty rotten. It was bumpy and hard to get an edge in the super G but the slalom had better conditions than I thought they'd be. It held up pretty well." He added, "The super G was definitely gnarly. We had light snow through the race and it was overcast, so the light was a little tough, but I'm happy. I hope to get a couple of more races and have some more good results." Nyman's two-run time was 2:11.25 while Jimmy Cochran (Keene, NH), moving beyond his normal gate-running routine this season, started 70th, moved up to 50th in the super G and finished 31st, one-hundredth of a second away from World Cup points.
"Ted did a really good job again. He was so close to the podium and that's very encouraging," Head Coach Phil McNichol said. "And Nyman had a few bobbles in super G or he'd have been higher." The overnight snow, mixed with some rain created tricky conditions, he said, "and if you got off-line, if you went off course just a bit, you'd get into some of that soft snow and the conditions became very variable...and that's what happened with Bode. He was doing well - he had the fastest time at the top, but he got off a bit, he went to his inside ski and put his hand down and bounced into some of that soft snow and he just couldn't get out.
"This isn't a hard course, but that makes it even more challenging because if you have a mistake there's no place to make up time. So, if you get off-line, it can really cost you." The men's schedule resumes Friday and Saturday in Italy with the traditional downhill and super G in Val Gardena, Italy, followed by a giant slalom and slalom next Sunday and Monday in nearby Alta Badia, Italy.

World Cup Freestyle - Jilin Beida Lake, China

Photo: Andy Walshe/USSA

JILIN BEIDA LAKE, China (Dec. 9) - Olympian Ryan St. Onge (Steamboat Springs, CO) won the opening aerials meet of the World Cup season Saturday as the freestyle schedule finally got underway in China. Former World Cup champion Jeret "Speedy" Peterson (Boise, ID) finished sixth.
St. Onge, who has won two World Cup contests in each of the last two seasons, took the first-round lead with a full, double-full, full - quad-twisting triple jump [four twists, three flips] - and then clinched the victory with a lay, double-full, full, full, a different quad-twisting triple, for 242.34 points. Han Xiaopeng of China was second at 239.72.
"I like this yellow [leader's] bib. I've never worn it and I'm thinking of hanging onto it for a while," St. Onge said. "I'm pretty happy with this start for the season."
St. Onge, who worked with private coach Todd Ossian after consulting with Aerials Head Coach Matt Christensen, said, "I've been trying to focus on my skills and make sure every jump goes as it should, and trying especially to work on my takeoff because if it goes well, everything else will follow. It worked out well and I even got to train a little more today... "The whole summer I thought it was gonna work, and then I knew it was going to work, but my first couple of days on snow I wasn't as sure any more," St. Onge said.
"But that was just the first week on snow [during training at Apex Ski Area in Canada] and there was kind of a rush to get things up and going, so my jumping didn't go as I hoped it would. But I fixed a couple of things and transferred all of it to this week, a step by step progression...and today was awesome," he said. "And I think there were a few people who doubted ‘Speedy' could take some time off and come back, but I knew from the beginning he'd be fine. He's got so much heart, and he loves jumping, and I knew he'd keep coming...and today he was awesome. He's going to be one of the guys to beat again this year, I know it."
"We've had good conditions all week although one day was very, very cold," Aerials Head Coach Matt Christensen said. "They both jumped great. I'm really impressed with how quickly ‘Speedy' has gotten up to speed, but he's stuck to a plan we put together a month ago and he looks great...and obviously Ryan's on it." National favorite Nina Li won the women's event with 195.10 points and Chinese aerialists swept the top four places. No U.S. women competed.
The weekend - which became the opening weekend for the freestyle season after poor snow conditions forced cancellation of the traditional opening events Sept. 2-3 at Mount Buller, Australia - continues Sunday with another aerials meet.

..."On the second day of the race, I broke my personal record by one kilometer an hour. Going in to the finals, my new personal best speed was 228.85 km/ h. The night before the finals, I was a bit nervous and I was really hoping the conditions would be good so that
I could attempt to break the American women’s record of 131.66 set by Caroline Curl in 1997. I had the best run of my life so far, and I was shocked to see the speed on the chronometer marked at 238.57 km/h. That’s 148.27 mph!!! I now have the 3rd fastest speed in the history of women’s skiing, behind Karine Dubachet and new women’s record holder Sanna Tidstrand."

Snow is still scarce most everywhere in Europe while there are excellent skiing conditions in North America and the Freestyle FIS World Cup will launch on good snow in China this weekend. Let's hope it snows in Europe soon.
The world’s first indoor aerials site to be built in Minsk (BLR)
The Belarus Olympic Committee and the Government of Belarus announced last week that they have approved the construction of a new ‘Aqua Park’ in Minsk. This USD 30 million multi-purpose water training complex will also include the world’s first indoor freestyle aerials site (water ramp). Photo: Fis / Belarus
Located near the center of Minsk, the ‘Aqua Park’ – with a total area of some 8’000m2 - will be enjoyed by the 1.4 million residents in Minsk, the capital city of Belarus, along with the members of the Belarus Freestyle Team. The total height of the complex roof will be 35 meters off of the water surface and the height of the in-run of the water ramp will be some 38 meters. The facility can also be used for water jumping competitions since it will have three standard jump take-offs.
Victor Groshev, Vice President of Belarus Freestyle Skiing Federation, and Nikolay Kozeko, National Team Coach and member of FIS Freestyle Committee noted: “This project secures the future of Freestyle in Belarus. We will have the best facility in the world. We look forward to training here and also providing training opportunities for other nations. We will have several aerial jumps and these jumps can be used for training by snowboarders and ski cross athletes as well.” The plans for the new complex have been stimulated by the successes of the Belarus Freestyle team including such Olympic aerial stars as Dmitry Dashinski (Bronze in Nagano in 1998, silver in Torino in 2006) and Alexey Grishin (Bronze in Salt Lake City 2002). Their success has also played a key role in enabling further development of Freestyle Skiing in Belarus and its nearby region.

Swiss jumpers Simon Ammann and Andreas Kuettel made history in the e.on ruhrgas FIS World Cup Ski Jumping competition held in Lillehammer (NOR) last Saturday as they captured the first-ever double victory for their native country. It was also only the second time that Ammann won a World Cup in his career, more than four and a half years since the first time in Oslo in 2002. On Sunday, 16-year-old Gregor Schlierenzauer (AUT) claimed his first World Cup win in only his second start on the circuit after having set a new hill record of 141 m the day before as he ranked 4th.
At Lake Louise (CAN), the star of the first speed weekend in the ladies’ Audi FIS Alpine World Cup was Lindsay Kildow (USA), who was the only athlete to stand on the podium in each race; once at the very top (in Saturday’s downhill) and twice in 2nd place. However, she was joined there twice by the ever-as-strong Austrian veteran Renate Goetschl who took her 39th World Cup victory in Sunday’s super-G. Germany’s Maria Riesch showed that she has recovered from her repeated injuries by triumphing in the season’s first downhill whilst Kelly Vanderbeek (CAN) finally claimed her long-overdue career-first podium place by placing 3rd on Sunday.
On the men’s side, we have seen seven different winners from seven nations in the seven races staged in the Audi FIS Alpine World Cup so far. After Aksel Lund Svindal (NOR) took control of the season’s first super combined at Beaver Creek (USA), one of the season’s most spectacular downhills provided the stage for the ‘return’ of Bode Miller (USA) to the top of the podium. Young blood then took control of the slalom finale at Birds of Prey on Sunday as Andre Myhrer (23, SWE) edged Michael Janyk (24, CAN) and Felix Neureuther (22, GER) to take his third career podium. Neither Janyk nor Neureuther had reached the podium before. At the same time, the Austrians had never failed to win a race during a Birds of Prey World Cup tour stop since the venue was included in 1997. That streak ended on Sunday. After seven of the total of 38 events, Svindal - runner up to Massimiliano Blardone (ITA) with Ted Ligety (USA) in third in Saturday’s giant slalom - now leads the overall Audi FIS Alpine World Cup.
The continuing warm weather across Europe has forced additional changes in the FIS World Cup calendars. Following the cancellation of the ladies’ and men’s Alpine events in St. Moritz (SUI) and Val d’Isère (FRA) scheduled for the weekend of 9th-10th December, FIS offered the opportunity to the United States Ski and Snowboard Association to reschedule the events before the teams left North America. USSA was, however, unable to do so. The men’s Audi FIS Alpine World Cup will now continue on Reiteralm (AUT), near Schladming, next Sunday with a super combined consisting of a super-G and one-run slalom. The outlook for the races scheduled for Val Gardena/Groeden (ITA) from 15th - 16th December is also positive. The amount of manmade snow is already sufficient for the race course and crash zones. Low temperatures are forecast for this weekend to aid artificial snow production, and a final decision will be made on Saturday at the latest. The snow control for the ladies’ downhill and super-G events scheduled for 16th – 17th December in Val d’Isere is coming up soon, too.
Changing weather conditions have also wrought havoc with the Viessmann FIS World Cup Cross-Country. While the initially planned events – a sprint in Aosta and a distance race in Cogne – had to be cancelled, thanks to the persistence of the Valle d’Aosta team to make snow, they will now host a classical technique distance races in Cogne on Wednesday, 13th December.

Photo: FIS / Jilin Beida Lake (CHN)
The Nokia Snowboard FIS World Cup parallel giant slalom races in San Vigilio di Marebbe (ITA) were rescheduled there just ten days later on 13th December 2006. The snowboardcross races in Bad Gastein (AUT) were postponed by just three days to 17th–18th December while the parallel slalom stays on its original date. Last but not least, the aerials season opener for Freestyle FIS World Cup is secure as there is great snow in China (see photo). The snow control for the moguls opener in Tignes (FRA) will take place tomorrow Thursday 7th December. Some weather forecasts are predicting a significant snow storm for the South side of the Alps for the weekend.

Opening Party
157 kilometres of pistes, 28 huts and restaurants, 49 lifts and 100 hectares of pistes (with snow machines) - the ski region is extended from Mayrhofen by the Penkenbahn and from Schwendau by the Horbergbahn.

Mayrhofen’s other skiing area, the Ahorn, is well suited for families. It also offers ideal practice slopes for beginners and children. The 5.5 km long valley descent (with snow machines) will appeal to very good skiers. A special feature is the Ahorn "Kinderland", a large children’s playground at an altitude of 2000 metres

The Penken cable car has been in operation since 16th December 1995. 47 gondolas will each take upto 15 persons (2000 people per hour) - a great increase compared to the 650 per hour of the hold lift. Another great advantage is that new lift has wind stability up to 90 km/h and you do not have to change at the middle station. This because this is the first lift to take a curve at full speed and will transport you to the valley stations of the chairlifts on the Penken

Ahorn-, Penken- and Horberg cable cars daily operate from 8.30am to 4.30pm

Kildow Grabs Third Straight Podium Second in Lake Louise super G LAKE LOUISE, Alberta (Dec. 3) - Lindsey Kildow (Vail, CO) conquered wind, snow and tricky visibility at Lake Louise once again Sunday, collecting her third World Cup top-2 finish in 48 hours as she was second to Austrian great Renate Goetschl in the first women's super G of the young season.
Goetschl was timed in an unofficial 1:20.86 for the 39th win of her career with Kildow - who won the downhill Saturday after finishing second Friday in the opening DH - was timed in 1:21.73. Completing the podium was Canadian Kelly Vanderbeek (1:21.77). In overcast, 10-degree weather, Kirsten Clark (Raymond, ME) was 19th and two other U.S. skiers were in the 20s - Libby Ludlow (Bellevue, WA) tied for 27th with U.S. super G champion Stacey Cook (Mammoth Mountain, CA) 29th on the Olympic Downhill run.
"Yeah, there's a comfort zone for me," said Kildow, who has won a downhill at Lake Louise each of the last three seasons; Sunday's podium was her second World Cup SG top-3 in the Canadian Rockies. "I did the same thing as [Saturday when she won] and just let my skis run. I'm confident here and I just didn't hold back. "It was really flat light, and there was some pretty funky stuff with the wind and I lost some time on the top, but I think I skied well the rest of the way," Kildow said. "It was cloudy and snowing and lots of winds - pretty similar to Friday...and any time you're on the podium in conditions like this, it's good and you should be happy...and I am."
The women have a couple of days down time as International Ski Federation works on scheduling upcoming races in snow-starved Europe. Races at St. Moritz, Switzerland, scheduled for next week have been canceled but organizers are hopeful of hosting the downhill and super G set for Dec. 16-17 in Val d Isere, France, where the men's races - planned for next weekend - have been scrubbed because of poor snow.

Former World Cup champion Jeret "Speedy" Peterson (Boise, ID) and Ryan St. Onge (Steamboat Springs, CO) will compete in the opening World Cup aerials meets of the season Dec. 9-10 in China.
After a final preseason training camp at this ski resort outside Penticton, Head Coach Matt Christiansen and the two athletes leave this weekend for Jilin Beida Lake, China. Emily Cook (Belmont, MA), who was on the 2006 Olympic Team with Peterson and St. Onge, trained at Apex but will begin competing next month when the World Cup makes its traditional January swing through the United States and Canada, Christansen said. "We had an outstanding camp. We had six days of jumping and it was good, Weather was cold but conditions were awesome, and the site is superb," the coach said. National teams from Europe and North America were at Apex sharing in the facilities; the World Cup season originally was to have begun in Australia over Labor Day Weekend, but a lack of snow forced cancellation. "They got up to triples [three flips] and they're looking good. We're looking for some good results in China," Christiansen said. "We feel Emily can use some additional training, but she'll be rolling next month."

New Heli-Based Avalanche Rescue System Debuts Dec. 7
Wasatch Backcountry Rescue to Demo New Transceiver Technology
Snowbird, Utah – A new helicopter-mounted avalanche transceiver technology will be unveiled for the first time in the United States Thursday, Dec. 7, in Utah’s Little Cottonwood Canyon. Members of Wasatch Backcountry Rescue, Air Med, Life Flight and the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office will perform a helicopter transceiver search using long-range receivers near Snowbird.
The event features Wasatch Backcountry Rescue demonstrating avalanche rescue incorporating the efficiency of a helicopter with the state-of-the-art receivers. Long-range receivers provide a wider search range that permits searching vast areas more quickly than a touring party without putting rescuers into danger.
“Avalanche rescue has traditionally been up to those in the touring party,” said Dean Cardinale, Snowbird Assistant Director of Snow Safety and Wasatch Backcountry Rescue President. “This technology will dramatically change rescue time, effort and success with the help and speed of a helicopter-mounted transceiver.” The demonstration begins at 10 a.m. at the Wasatch Powderbird Guides heli-port with a meeting and ground presentation, followed by an 11 a.m. helicopter air search. Rescue Training Center targets will be buried across the street on Mt. Superior and helicopters will locate them using the long-range receiver.
Members of the media are invited to attend the demonstration and air search. Representatives of Wasatch Backcountry Rescue, Air Med, Life Flight and the rescue equipment manufacturer will be on hand for the demonstration and interviews. Take Little Cottonwood Canyon to Snowbird Entry 4 and follow the Bypass Road to Wasatch Powderbird Guides.

Celebrating 30 years of service, Wasatch Backcountry Rescue is a volunteer organization made up of snow safety professionals and their avalanche rescue dogs from nine Utah resorts, UDOT, the Utah Olympic Park and Wasatch Powderbird Guides working with Salt Lake, Utah and Summit county sheriff’s offices. Wasatch Backcountry Rescue member resorts are Snowbird, Alta, Brighton, Solitude, Park City , The Canyons, Deer Valley , Snowbasin and Sundance.
