HEAVENLY’S MASTER PLAN APPROVED BY TAHOE REGIONAL PLANNING AGENCY
Heavenly Mountain Resort, Lake Tahoe, Calif./Nev. – April 30, 2007 – On Wednesday, April 25, 2007, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency’s Governing Board unanimously approved Heavenly Mountain Resort’s 2006 Master Plan Amendment, charting the course for Heavenly as a premiere mountain destination for the next 10 years, and putting Heavenly at the forefront of environmental stewardship within the snowsports industry. “We went through the process and came away with a great plan that improves the resort in an environmentally-sensitive way,” said Blaise Carrig, Heavenly’s chief operating officer. “This plan solidifies our position as the premiere snowsports destination at Lake Tahoe. We’re extremely excited about the next 10 years. The TRPA and Forest Service staffs are to be complimented for their dedication and outstanding work on the Master Plan.”
Phase I projects approved under the plan include: Replacement of the existing North Bowl and Olympic fixed-grip chair lifts with high-speed, detachable lift technology; a 1,000-seat on-mountain restaurant with incredible views of Lake Tahoe called Powderbowl Lodge; 152 acres of new ski trails; re-grading Skyline Trail (the infamous traverse from California to Nevada); and a skier bridge that will allow skiers and riders to ski from the Gondola top station to Tamarack Express. The plan also calls for multi-use hiking/cross-country skiing/snowshoeing trails in the area between the Gondola top station and the Observation Deck, and a zip line adventure ride for summer use.
The Master Plan Amendment also includes significant environmental enhancements. The plan calls for the replacement of the North Bowl and Olympic chair lifts in a way that will avoid a nearby stand of large trees. The new chairs will access North Bowl Woods, which will provide a unique skiing experience within a grove of beautiful, giant red fir trees. It also calls for the removal of Sky Deck from a wetland area associated with Heavenly Valley Creek and the restoration of the meadow in which the deck currently sits. The plan also contains the most comprehensive environmental mitigation and monitoring program in the Tahoe Basin. “With this Master Plan, Heavenly has become a leader among ski resorts in terms of environmental stewardship,” said Rochelle Nason, executive director of the League to Save Lake Tahoe. “The resort worked closely with conservationists to assure their plan will result in greater protection for Lake Tahoe’s water quality, and their decision to spare the North Bowl trees is tremendous. Heavenly is a terrific destination for skiers and riders who want to help ‘Keep Tahoe Blue’.”
“The Sierra Club is delighted that Heavenly Mountain Resort has joined the ranks of the most environmentally-friendly ski resorts,” said Tahoe-Area Sierra Club president Michael Donahoe, echoing the League’s comments. “Many of our local members are long-time Heavenly skiers and boarders and are excited about continuing that tradition.”
The results of Heavenly’s past environmental programs are positive: watershed condition and water quality in each of the watersheds draining Heavenly have been improved through a systematic restoration and re-vegetation program. At the Boulder and California Main Lodge base areas, state-of-the-art water quality Best Management Practices (BMPs) have been installed to further reduce pollutants. Nearly 30 acres of disturbed stream environment zones have been restored. Since 2003, Heavenly has been attaining its Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) targets for suspended sediment in Heavenly Valley Creek. This is the first use of the TMDL in the Tahoe Basin, and is seen as the future for watershed management at Lake Tahoe.
The final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS/EIR/EIR) was endorsed unanimously by the Governing Board as a sound technical and scientific document which found that no significant environmental effects would result from the implementation of the proposed projects or alternatives. The EIS/EIS/EIR is a joint document, developed in conjunction with and meeting the requirements of the USDA Forest Service, TRPA and El Dorado County, California.
“The document and the whole process were created in an atmosphere of collaboration,” said Andrew Strain, Heavenly’s vice president of planning and governmental affairs. “The final plan included input from multiple government agencies, environmental groups and the public, as well as over three years of scientific research, monitoring and modeling. The Master Plan is the result of an open, thorough and transparent process.”

Mammoth Mountain
Spring in Mammoth is such a great time of year. Not only can you still come up and enjoy hitting the slopes out of Main Lodge, but temps are warmer, the sun is out and the days are longer. This year, thanks to some April storms, the snow is in great shape. It's firmer in the morning and it's softening up into perfect spring corn as the temperatures warm up.

Today we're expecting to operate seven lifts out of Main Lodge, that includes Broadway Express, Stump Alley Express, Facelift Express, Thunderbound, Discovery Chair and the Lower and Upper Panorama Gondola. This weekend, weather & snow permitting we're expecting to add Chair 5 and Chair 23 to that list.

The weather is supposed to be beautiful this weekend - so drop what you're doing and head up to Mammoth to enjoy spring in the Sierra. Why not see if you can ski and mountain bike in the same day? Mountain biking trails are beginning to open up at lower elevations - Rock Creek is in killer shape and the snow has mostly melted at Shady Rest Park.

Snow Alert -

USSA News
PARK CITY, Utah (April 26) – Janine Alfano has been named as vice president of fundraising for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team Foundation, the fundraising arm of the U.S. Ski Team and U.S. Snowboarding. President and CEO Bill Marolt cited Alfano’s 11 years of experience with the Foundation in making the announcement. “Janine has played a key role with the Foundation since coming to our Team in 1996,” said Marolt. “Her experience will provide us with an opportunity to maintain continuity and consistency in the department, and to build from her strengths immediately.” Alfano has managed every area of Foundation. She began her USSA career managing fundraising events and is responsible for developing the very successful model used by the Foundation today. She also is responsible for creating the “Champions Club” program, which provides opportunities for supporters to attend the Olympics as VIP guests of the Team, while creating a significant revenue stream to fund athletic programming. “We’ve been successful in the Foundation because we have a very talented staff working with an extremely dedicated and generous board of trustees,” said Alfano. “One of the things I’m most looking forward to is working more closely with our Board.” “Among my immediate goals is to reach our Legacy Campaign endowment goal of $60 million so that we can begin construction on our Center of Excellence. This world class training facility is critical to our future – not only for athletics but for all of USSA”
Alfano will oversee a staff of 12. The Foundation’s activities are diverse including the Legacy Campaign endowment, major giving, special events, direct marketing and the U.S. Ski Team Gold Pass. The Foundation raises nearly $7 million a year in its annual fund with a goal of reaching $10 million in annual revenue by 2010. A New Jersey native, Alfano is a 1988 graduate of Dickinson College in Pennsylvania. She came to the Foundation in 1996 after working in sales for The Denver Post. She lives in Park City.
Alfano replaces Trisha Worthington. Worthington has left USSA to spend more time with her family and to direct a new Park City-based community foundation. The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team Foundation is a 501(c)3 charitable organization. It is managed integrally within the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association, the national governing body for Olympic skiing and snowboarding, which funds, develops and trains the U.S. Ski Team and U.S. Snowboarding. The Team receives no federal funding or subsidies and operates solely through private donations from individuals, corporations and foundations. To learn more about supporting the Team, contact Janine Alfano at 435.647.2071 or donations can be sent to her attention at Box 100/1500 Kearns Boulevard, Park City, UT 84060

Go Traci ,....FIS SPEED SKI News
Last week, the world’s best Speed Skiing racers gathered in Verbier-Nendaz (SUI) to contest the 2007 FIS Speed Skiing World Championships. The station pulled out every stop to provide the perfect environment for the championships, attended by 58 athletes from 12 nations. In the course of the championships, over 330 individual runs were completed from four different start heights, the last one 430m above and 880m from the finish line.

The ladies’ competition was particularly fiercely contested between the Swedish triumvirate of Anna-Karin Modin, Sanna Tidstrand and Emilie Wolff, pitted against Tracie Sachs (USA), the current World Cup Champion, and Elena Banfo (ITA); the finish order of these five racers changed with each run. In the final run, Tidstrand maintained her lead over Banfo, with Wolff in 3rd place. This was a tremendous result for their manager Per Kjelstrom and the whole Swedish team that has established an elite training program for Speed Skiing.
The men’s competition was equally exciting. Most surprising was the consistent challenge provided by the Production Class skiers who made up 25% of the field and, while the slowest racers were cut after each run, Markus Muenzer (AUT) remained in contention up to and including the semi-final run. The classical field included previous World Champion Jukka Viitasaari (FIN), Ross Anderson (USA), Marc Poncin (GBR) and John ‘Mad Cow’ Hemble, who came out of retirement for the event. However, it was Bastien Montes (FRA) who kept the large audience guessing, eventually clinching bronze despite having been much further down the field during the training runs. Meanwhile, it was less surprising that Simone Origone (ITA), the men’s World Cup Champion, and Philippe May (SUI ) - one of the principle organizers as well as a first-rate athlete – battled it out for gold. With three first places each in the training runs, Origone finally secured the trophy and title of World Champion by prevailing by a margin of 2/1000ths of a second over May.

Other FIS news Traci has been gracious in supplying photos of speed ski events and dramatic pictures of Verbier CH Janica Kostelic (CRO)
The most successful Alpine Skiing racer in the last decade announced her retirement at the age of 25. "I would like to keep racing but am scared to get injured again. The risk of injury would be there if I continue. I do not want to suffer again," said Janica Kostelic in a press conference in her home city of Zagreb on Thursday. "The pressure is off. I want to enjoy life now." Janica Kostelic won four Olympic gold medals (2002 giant slalom, slalom, combined, 2006 combined) and became FIS World Champion five times (2003 slalom, combined, 2005 downhill, slalom, combined). She also won the overall World Cup three times (2001, 2003, 2006) and captured 30 World Cup victories. She is one of only three athletes – the others being Petra Kronberger (AUT) and Pernilla Wiberg (SWE) – to have claimed victories in all five FIS World Cup events. She captured her first World Cup podium as a 16-year-old in a slalom in Park City (USA) in 1998 and her first World Cup victory just two months later in St. Anton (AUT) in a combined race. Kostelic's career was plagued by many injuries, beginning with a severe fall in St. Moritz (SUI) in December 1999 that caused serious knee injury and led to first of many operations. She also had to have surgery on her thyroid in 2004 and due to continuous pain in her knees and back, already decided to take a break from racing this season.

US Ski Team News
SUMMIT LAKE, Alaska (April 18) - Make that two consecutive Arctic Man victories for two-time Olympian Scott Macartney (Redmond, WA) and U.S. Snowboarding rider Ryan McDonald (Entiat, WA).
On a blue-sky Friday the 13th with a crowd of perhaps 10,000 spectators, they conquered the 22nd annual test in which a skier or rider barrels down an 80-second speed run, hooks up with a snowmobile driver - going about 40 mph or more during the hookup, gets pulled more than two miles through a lengthy - but mostly level - course, and then releases to navigate the final downhill section. Macartney, who won a year ago in his first shot at the Arctic Man competition in the Hoodoo Mountains north of Fairbanks - about 300 miles north of Anchorage, won in a record time of 4:01.49; Tyson Johnson, his snowmobile driver a year ago, was his pilot again. They hit a high of 88mph during the pull and Macartney was clocked at 82mph as he crossed the finish to beat the field of nearly 20 skiers by two seconds. Olympic teammate Marco Sullivan (Squaw Valley, CA), in his first attempt at Arctic Man, was second in 4:03.46. McDonald repeated as Arctic Man men's snowboard champion in 4:40.05, the only rider among the handful of snowboarders to break the five-minute mark.
Macartney, completing his ninth season on the U.S. Ski Team, and eight-year veteran Sullivan competed after the the Nature Valley U.S. Alpine Championships at Alaska's Alyeska Resort where Sullivan won the gold medal in downhill. "He and I had a fun time," Macartney said. "This is a very different world from the World Cup, of course, because it's all pretty straight but the speed is high and, of course, there are no safety nets on this one section where you're going 80 miles an hour off a blind turn and roll. So, if you blow it, you'll definitely crash...ad you'll crash into a wall," Macartney said. Once again, longtime U.S. Ski Team waxing technician Brian Burnett helped arrange the participation and waxed their skis and McDonald's snowboard as part of the Global Motor Sports team. "You start with no poles [for the first downhill] so the balance is completely different...and you have no say in your line [when you're being pulled by the snowmobile], so that's different. At the bottom [of the final DH], the fatigue is pretty intense. Your legs are screaming - I mean, you've been skiing about five miles," Macartney said.
Apart from the hookup with the snowmachine driver, Macartney said the final phase can be gtricky because when the skier or rider releases, he or she has to slingshot up - "we don't have uphills on the World Cup," he noted - to the summit of a final hill before heading for the finish. He and Johnson hit a top speed of 88mph through the tow zone; the record of 91mph was set by the third-place skiers, four-time winners Eric Heil and Len Story. "We didn't focus on the top speed but we made up time on the slower sections," Macartney explained.

Coolzone Winterplex Still Moving Forward
Plans for the Coolzone Winterplex in Texas, first announced a year ago, are still progressing with backers, The Bearfire Group, aiming to commence construction by the end of the year with the facility likely to open in late 2008. The Bearfire Group is raising $375m for the Coolzone Winterplex within the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Possible sites being considered are reported to include a 527 acre location formerly owned by Intel. The Coolzone Winterplex’s main attraction will feature a 20-story outdoor ski and snowboard mountain which will be surfaced with Briton Engineering Developments’ Snowflex surface. The mountain will be complete with hotels, retaiuling, restaurants and chair lifts, a snowboard park with competition half pipe, toboggans and snow tubing. In addition to catering to extreme sports enthusiasts, the park will also feature activities for the entire family including two ice rinks, an outdoor ice trail, a winter wonderland for children with snow, an outdoor concert venue, rock climbing and rides. The project calls for more than 60 acres of attractions. Bearfire Group is also in discussions with a major motion picture studio to use their intellectual property to theme a portion of the park. By populating the park environment with identifiable characters, the Coolzone Winterplex will attract families as well as sports enthusiasts. The intellectual property will be highlighted by rides and entertainment. Additional family attractions include educational components and an opportunity to play in the park’s Winter Wonderland.

Michael Carney, 64, who runs the centre with his son Darren, told local media he felt it was time to move on after the death of his wife. "I lost my wife Margaret to cancer three years ago. We had been married for 40 years and it hasn't been the same without her. Running the ski centre has been a challenge. We've had to fight for everything, in terms of planning. But now it's a nice family place and we have enjoyed it here."

Sugarloaf
T-shirts and shorts seemed to be the proper attire for the day here at Sugarloaf. We've had temps near 70 all day with bright sunshine, and there's still a TON of snow to be had out there thanks to the 95 inches of snow we've received in April.

Credit: Sugarloaf Cam photo
These are prime spring conditions, which is why we extended the season until April 29.
Because the temps will be mild overnight, they will not groom any of our 134 open trails tonight. We'll run the SuperQuad and Timberline lifts now through the 29th. Please note: there is no lift-serviced green circle terrain available at this time.
Tomorrow we can expect partly sunny skies, and though the temps will drop some, it will still be near 50 degrees here at the base.
While the trail is still open, the park features have been taken out of the Yard. We've had a great first season in there, and we hope to see all you park rats back here next year. If you're looking for spring skiing, no place is going to have anything even close to what we've got here at Sugarloaf. Check out our latest video and see for yourself

US SNOWBOARD NEWS
Juliann Fritz, ussa.org U.S. Snowboarding Dominates 2007 PARK CITY, Utah (April 19) - U.S. Snowboarding continued to roll in 2007 as pros Gretchen Bleiler (Aspen, CO), Steve Fisher (Breckenridge, CO), Tommy Czeschin (Mammoth Lakes, CA), Lindsey Jacobellis (Stratton Mountain, VT) and Nate Holland (Squaw Valley, CA) nailed podium after podium across the globe. "Overall, it was a great year," said U.S. Snowboarding Head Coach Peter Foley, who has been at the helm since the program originated in 1994. "We're seeing consistent progress from all the groups. The world competition keeps getting stronger, but so de we."
Another banner year for Bleiler Bleiler picked up from her Olympic halfpipe silver medal in Torino with a win at the season opening World Cup, sharing the top of the podium with fellow Team rider Scotty Lago (Seabrook, NH) on Thanksgiving Day in Saas Fee, Switzerland. She then went on to podium at two Chevrolet U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix events and took second at both the X Games and US Open. Bleiler also won the State Farm U.S. Snowboard Cup in Lake Placid, NY for the second straight year, winning both World Cup events she entered. Fisher led a men's podium sweep in Lake Placid with Czeschin and Elijah Teter (South Lake Tahoe, CA) filling the other two slots. "The '07 season for the halfpipe Team saw great success for our veteran riders as well as some solid results from our rookie team," said halfpipe Head Coach Mike Jankowski. "We had a blast riding the 22-foot pipes at events like the Tamarack Grand Prix. The future looks bright for the Team from the young riders on up to the veterans, 2010 is in our sights and we are trying to stay ahead of the game on our way there."
Jacobellis repeat world champion In SBX, Jacobellis dominated again, clinching her second consecutive World Championship victory en route to the World Cup title with back-to-back wins at the U.S. Snowboard Cup in Lake Placid. She also won silver at the X Games for her career fourth medal at X (three SBX wins from '03-'05) as Joanie Anderson (South Lake Tahoe, CA) won gold passing Jacobellis at the finish. Also at X, Holland defended his title after taking bronze at the World Championships. He closed the season with a World Cup podium run of back-to-back second place finishes in 72 hours at Lake Placid that nearly nabbed him the World Cup title. Olympic champion Seth Wescott (Carrabassett Valley, ME) would also medal at Worlds with silver, but was sidelined for the season after suffering a broken forearm at the World Cup opener, which began a month late due to unseasonable weather in Europe.
"It was a super fun year for the SBX riders," added Foley. "We saw good results out of the top-level guys, but even more exciting was the results we saw from the new kids." Dishing out those results were Callan Chythlook-Sifsof (Girdwood, AK) and Nick Baumgartner (Iron River, MI), who took national bragging rights with victories at the VISA U.S. Snowboardcross Championships at Tamarack, ID. Both also notched their first World Cup podiums this season with Chythlook-Sifsof finishing third at the World Cup opener in Japan while Baumgartner capped his season with a second at World Cup Finals. Additionally, 15-year-old junior Brooke Shaw (Bantam, CT) won both halfpipe and SBX titles on the Revolution Tour, then closed the season with a bronze medal finish in SBX at Junior Worlds.
Alpine digs deep
Olympic riders Michelle Gorgone (Sudbury, MA) and Tyler Jewell (also Sudbury) produced top 10s this season with Jewell posting a career best World Cup finish with a parallel giant slalom sixth on the 2006 Olympic hill in Bardonecchia, Italy. Jewell was also sixth in PGS at the World Championships in Arosa, Switzerland, where Stacia Hookom (Edwards, CO) posted her best worlds finish with fifth before retiring from competitive riding after 12 years and seven World Championships with U.S. Snowboarding. In total, U.S. riders loaded the finals 23 times with Justin Reiter (Steamboat Springs, CO) making the top-16 eight times. In a sport where experience counts, U.S. Snowboarding piled in the start gates this season with multiple riders gaining World Cup starts including Lindsay Lloyd (Centerville, UT), who would take the PGS title at U.S. championships. Also winning U.S. titles were Gorgone, who took the parallel slalom crown and Chris Klug (Aspen, CO), who reclaimed both PGS and PAL titles from Reiter.
"It was a great season for U.S. Snowboarding. We have a strong mix of veterans and rookie riders in all our programs who are constantly pushing the level higher. We also have a super dedicated group of coaches who continue to drive the programs forward," said U.S. Snowboarding Program Director Jeremy Forster. U.S. Snowboarding is set to be back on snow in early May for a halfpipe and SBX training camp at Oregon's Mt. Hood Meadows.

FIS News
The FIS Speed Skiing World Cup 2007 competition promises to be one of the most exciting in recent years. Now half-way through the eight-race-series, due to reach its finale in Cervinia (ITA) on 2nd April, one of the largest fields of racers ever seen is jostling for points.
After two years in which Simone Origone (ITA) has dominated the men’s rankings, the current rankings show him languishing in 3rd place – behind little brother Ivan (ITA) and former World Champion Philippe May (SUI). Just below this trio, there is another pack of four contenders – Roger Wickman (SWE), Marc Poncin (GBR), Michel Goumens (SUI) and Ross Anderson (USA) – waiting for a chance to pounce. Finally, Jukka Viitasaari (FIN) has only competed in one of the WC races to-date, coming a strong 4th. The ladies competition is no less nail-biting. After winning the first two races of the series, the four-time World Cup winner and World Champion, Tracie Max Sachs (USA) has sustained an injury and is slipping down the rankings. Wearing the leader’s jersey is Anna-Karin Modin (SWE), just two points clear with three podium places this year. Sanna Tidstrand (SWE) excited her home-nation crowd by winning in Salen and could quickly close the gap. The Finnish team, including Kati Metsäpelto, Heini and Pia Piipponen, and Hannamiina Tanninen, have yet to make a start.
The Speed Skiing World Cup is far from decided, and following its conclusion, the FIS World Ski Championships in Verbier (SUI) from 16th-19th April

Sugarloaf
Snow last night and this morning piled up about 12-14 inches deep everywhere from about mid-mountain and higher, and we've had another two inches of snow and sleet mixed in on top of that. Forecast are calling for a change back to mostly snow by late this afternoon, with as much as 16 more inches expected at higher elevations by Wednesday.

Groomers will be out on limited terrain again tonight, and we have the same four lifts scheduled to run tomorrow - SuperQuad, Double Runner West, Spillway East, and #3 T-Bar - winds and weather permitting.

We've got 100 percent of our terrain open here at the Loaf, including some great skiing on the Backside and Frontside snowfields. Check out some video of last Friday's powder for a little taste.
http://www.sugarloaf.com

Sugarloaf/USA’s fabled Backside Snowfields to open in time for the biggest party in ski country. In addition to the Snowfields, 133 of Sugarloaf’s 134 trails are now open with some of the best April skiing in recent history. Sugarloaf’s Snowfields are the East’s only lift-serviced, above treeline terrain and offer an experience that is often compared to high alpine bowl skiing. The experts-only steep, wide open expanse of the Backside makes it some of the most unique terrain in East. This weekend is Sugarloaf’s annual Bud Light Reggae Festival and features 10 of the biggest names in reggae on four stages inside and outside all weekend long. Friday night’s concert features Barrington Levy, who is considered to be Jamaica ’s #1 singer. Saturday night, America ’s top reggae artist, John Brown’s Body, leads the all-star line up on the main stage. Sugarloaf’s boundary-to-boundary policy allows skiing throughout the Backside Snowfields including named routes such as High Rigger, Hard Tack, and Pure Heat. Front Face Snowfield trails such as White Nitro Extension, which is groomed regularly, Powder Keg, Bubblecuffer Extension, and Winter’s Way Extension are also open with excellent natural snow surfaces.

The Backside Snowfields is a wilderness experience that should only be attempted by the most skilled skiers and riders. Sugarloaf’s Ski Patrol asks those who have never experienced the Backside to stop by the summit building for tips on the most navigable way down.
All this in a foot of fresh powder on Reggae Weekend. It just doesn't get any better.

FIS News
The 11th FIS Snowboard Junior World Championships will take place in Bad Gastein (AUT) from 10th-13th April. Almost 300 of the world’s best young boarders representing 29 nations will be competing in the second FIS Junior Snowboard World Championships held in Austria. The opening ceremony will take place on Monday 9th April and the title competitions will commence with the snowboardcross finals on 11th April, followed by parallel giant slalom on 12th and both big air and parallel slalom on 13th April. Young athletes born between 1987–1991 are entitled to participate. At last year’s championships in Vivaldi Park (KOR), Switzerland won the medals ranking followed by USA and Finland. A regular host of the Nokia Snowboard FIS World Cup and a many-time venue for the FIS Alpine World Cup, Bad Gastein and the resort of Sportgastein in Gastein Valley, located just an hour from Salzburg at an altitude of 1.589 m, are no newcomers to hosting high-quality winter sports events. “The conditions in Bad Gastein are excellent - we can really look forward to having wonderful competitions next week,” commented Peter Krogoll, FIS Technical Advisor for the event. “After the recent snowfall, there is at least 160cm of snow and the competition venues are in a great shape. The snowboardcross course is already finished, and so is the big air venue while the parallel slopes are well on their way.”

The first-ever Grand Prix ‘Sprint Tour’ took place in Russia from 28th - 31st March. This new competition series consists of four Cross-Country sprint races - two in the classical and two in the free technique – held over four days. The 2007 Grand Prix ‘Sprint Tour’ included a Mountain Sprint and a Super Sprint over 100m, staged in the Sverdlovsk region some 500 km north of Yekaterinburg in the Urals, and a Sprint Criterium (points race) and a normal FIS sprint hosted in the Khanty – Mansiysk/Yugra region in Western Siberia.
The winners of the 2007 Grand Prix ‘Sprint Tour’ were 20-year-old Evgenia Shapovalova and former Sprint World Champion and Sapporo Team Sprint silver medalist Vassili Rotchev, both of Russia. Shapovalova, who won her first World Cup sprint in Changchun (CHN) this season, took the victory with just a four-point margin over Alena Sidko, with Natalia Korosteleva in 3rd (both Russia). The men’s series, with participation from international sprint specialists, was won by home favorite Rotchev 25 points ahead of this season’s Swedish newcomer Emil Joensson and his teammate Peter Larsson.

The contest features professional and amateur ski jumpers soaring hundreds of feet using alpine and telemark ski equipment.

The final round of the amateur contest and the pro competition take place Sunday, April 15, beginning at 10 a.m. An awards ceremony will follow the conclusion of Sunday’s events. BRETTON WOODS, N.H. - Recent late-season snowstorms will have skiing at midwinter quality this weekend at the Mount Washington Resort for the third BodeFest, featuring two days of skiing with Bode Miller, director of skiing at Bretton Woods and the newly (re-) crowned World Cup super G champion. All proceeds again will go to Miller's nonprofit Turtle Ridge Foundation and the Bretton Woods Adaptive Program.

BodeFest 2007, presented by Head USA, begins late Friday with Miller, who tied the U.S. record for most national championships by a man when he won his ninth title March 31 in Alaska, skiing with youngsters participating in the weekend. He will be providing some ski tips in addition to autographs and photo opportunities.

Saturday, four-member teams will compete at Bretton Woods on a modified giant slalom with the better of two runs - one in the morning, one in the afternoon - determining the top teams with a barbecue at BW's main base lodge splitting the day.

In addition, there will be separate Kids' Camp and adult activities. Among the highlights will be Miller reading to younger children and then holding a question and answer sessions with teens. There also will be a silent auction with prizes including autographed memorabilia from Super Bowl hero Tom Brady and a VIP trip to a Boston Bruins game. A live auction will offer prizes including attendance at the World Cup ski races during the Birds of Prey weekend in Beaver Creek, CO, and a Boston Celtics Dream Experience for eight.

"When we started BodeFest three years ago," Miller said, "the goal was to have a great time on the slopes with all of my friends and fans at Bretton Woods. "The event has grown and, with the creation of the Turtle Ridge Foundation in early 2006, so has our ability to make an impact. This year's BodeFest presents us with a tremendous opportunity to raise awareness, support and make contributions to worthy causes that directly benefit people in need and the community at large."

Turtle Ridge Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and creating programs to deal with difficult environmental, health and economic issues. The Bretton Woods Adaptive Program, also a nonprofit, is dedicated to providing sports and recreation to the disabled.

Killington
Record Spring Snow?
This year marks the fourth time in the past 20 years that Killington has received 100 or more inches of snow since March 1. During the 2000-01 season, Killington received a record 125 inches of snow after March 1, including a record 316 inches for the season. Now I know we probably won’t eclipse 316 inches, but we’re well on our way to our annual average of 250 as forecasters are calling for another dump on Thursday, some say 6-12 inches! Fat skis anyone?

The Bear awakens
What are we going to do with all this new snow? Ski and ride on it of course as we re-open Bear Mountain for Friday and Saturday. We’ll spin the Bear Mountain Quad along with Stage II of the Skyeship Gondola to get you to 100+ trails, including the 430-foot long Superpipe and additional terrain park features. The Bear Mountain Lodge will be open for ticket sales and bathrooms only, so read below and head over to the K-1 Lodge for all the festivities, food and drinks.

I dream, you dream, we all dream of Sunshine Daydream “Peacheaters,” “Playin’ Dead,” “Mystic Rebel,” “Kind Buds,” plus some free samples of Ben & Jerry’s and you’ve got a recipe for celebration. The 11th Annual Sunshine Daydream Festival, a tribute to the Grateful Dead, rolls into Killington’s K-1 Lodge area Saturday as part of the Bud Light Concert Series.

FREE SKI/BOARD DAY AT GROUSE MOUNTAIN FRIDAY, APRIL 13, 2007

Grouse Mountain will kick off the final weekend of the epic 2007/08 winter season with a day of free skiing and riding for all guests who bring a donation for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. Donations may be made in cash (suggested minimum $5) or a minimum of 5 non-perishable food items.
This has been a season for the books. The snowfall was positively relentless, which made for some of the best conditions imaginable. This is our way of celebrating and giving back to the community at large. The Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society does important work throughout the year and we happy to support their efforts.
While food donations are certainly welcome, due to the high volume of supplies purchased by the Food Bank Society, cash donations will literally go three times further, giving your $5.00 donation a food purchasing power of $15.00. So come on out and join us!

Whistler BC, The addictive quality of skiing and snowboarding is a fact of life in Whistler, where a set of boards is regarded as the key to self-actualisation. In late spring, little infidelities creep into the community, with mountain bikes, golf clubs, climbing gear and surfboards being hauled out of storage.
This April 13-22, at the 12th TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival, an epicenter of sport-inspired art, the surfboard is set to enjoy its first starring role.
In conjunction with Brave Art, surfboards will become the latest canvass for artists to express themselves with.
Brave Art, the Festival’s revolutionary art show of the best in urban and street art showcases the work of over 30 artists in a 150 plus piece installation, ranging from canvas, sculpture, skate decks, film and graffiti. Nothing if off limits for these street artist superheroes. Everything is canvass.
The Masterpiece in Motion snowboard art competition is going into its third year at the TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival, with the original snowboard and skateboard graphic design work of 30 finalists to hang on display at the TELUS Whistler Conference Centre from April 13-22 2007.
It was only a matter of time before the surfboards were pulled into the mix.
The surfboard exhibit will launch at the TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival, before traveling across Canada , to raise awareness about the Surfrider Foundation.
High-octane meets high-brow, at the TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival, with flagship afterdark events like the Fashion Exposed sensory assault, Pro Photographer Showdown, Brave Art exhibit, Words and Stories jam session and 72 Hour Filmmaker Showdown translating the on-hill energy of the world’s best ski and snowboard athletes into every conceivable artistic medium.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Mountain) is the southernmost glacier in the Northern Hemisphere. Consisting of 13 peaks, among which Shanzidou is the highest one with an altitude of 5,600 meters (18,360 feet), Jade Dragon Snow Mountain stretches a length of 35 kilometers (22 miles) and a width of 20 kilometers (13 miles). Looking from Lijiang Old Town in the south which is 15 kilometers (nine miles) away, the snow-covered and fog-enlaced mountain resembles a jade dragon lying in the clouds, hence, the name Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
The 13 peaks, which have the altitudes of at least 4,000 meters, are covered by snow all year round; the mountain is called the "Natural Glacier Museum" for it has all types of glacier

Sugarloaf
Sugarloaf/USA, The King of Spring, is crowned with more than 2 feet of snow CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine ¾ More than two feet of snow has fallen at Sugarloaf/USA since Wednesday, Apr. 4 making this week’s snow the largest April storm in more than 6 years. Since Apr. 1, the resort has received more than 31 inches of snow creating some of the best conditions of the season. Sugarloaf’s scheduled closing date is Apr. 22.
As a result of this week’s snow, more than 95 percent of Sugarloaf’s terrain is expected to be open for Easter weekend. “Sugarloaf is famous for late season snowstorms and phenomenal spring skiing but this is over the top,” said Ethan Austin, Sugarloaf’s snow reporter. Sugarloaf’s summit, including the Front Face Snowfields and possibly the Backside, are expected to open in time for the weekend. April is often the second snowiest month of the season behind March and this year is no exception. “With nearly three feet of snow already this month, conditions for Easter and the 2007 Bud Light Reggae Festival, Apr. 12-15, will be the hands down best skiing and riding in the East and among the best spring conditions in recent memory,” said Sugarloaf’s Communications Manager Bill Swain . “Unbelievable snow plus a line up of the biggest names in reggae are going to make this year’s event one for the record books.”
The legendary Barrington Levy, who is bestowed with the moniker of Jamaica ’s #1 singer of all time, leads Friday’s line up while John Brown’s Body, one of America ’s top reggae artists, will take the main stage on Saturday night. The biggest party in ski country also features the region’s top artists on four stages inside and outside all weekend long. Daytime outside music events are open to all ages. Mayrhofen- Austria
Mayrhofen in winter, an idyllic place with a population of 3,600, nestling in a valley, before the unique and fascinating backdrop of the mining world of the Zillertal’s main peak. Numerous mountains with large ski areas and white shimmering mountaintops characterise this pristine and beautiful winter landscape.
New: "White Lounge"
In the middle of the ski resort at the Ahorn, the mountain to enjoy, nearby the panoramic platform Zillertal a special mountain adventure will open this winter: "White Lounge" - an igloo bar comletely of snow with comfortable seats inside, loungers and snow bar outside.
"Zillertal National Park": An Alpine Treasure of 80 Glaciers!
With its valley population and lively villages, the Zillertal has a lot to offer. Most outstanding however is the spectacle of nature with its majestic mountains and the Hintertux Glacier as eternal white backdrop at the end of the valley. A special gem is the Zillertal Alps High Mountain National Park.
This "area of peace" on the Zillertal Main Ridge (1,000-3,509m) extends impressively over 372 km2: the landscape is dominated by almost 80 glaciers, three large reservoirs as well as several mountain and corrie lakes, which extend over all altitudes of the inner Alps.
As well as marmots, eagles and chamois, other endangered species like steinbock and bearded vultures have also found their place in the high mountain landscape. The lateral moraines in Zemmgrund are a highly interesting geographical area in the Alps: rock crystal, cairngorm, tourmaline, granite, amethyst and hematite are among the treasures. There's a lot to see and discover in the National Park with the guided themed treks "On the Berliner Hütte Glacier Trail”, "On the Trail of Poachers” or with a torchlight trek over Pfitscher Joch.

Total 4 day snowfall of 12-18" above 2,500 feet and at least 6-10" at base by Friday or later in weekend. There is a 50% chance of 2 feet by the weekend mid and upper mountain and a foot at base.
Temps today will be in the low to mid 30’s during the day, then dropping overnight. Winds will be moderate but Buddy mentioned something about possible wind hold for the Tram/Flyer so it’s probably not a bad idea to touch base this morning for an update on lift operations. The Red and Blue Chairs should not be affected We’ve still got 80% of our terrain open with 60 trails and glades. Conditions will change up a bit with the cooler temps and incoming snow. We’ll get you an update on surfaces too when we have a clearer picture later this morning

Hlíðarfjall - Iceland
The ski slopes of Hlíðarfjall are a paradise for skiers; and if you are staying in Akureyri they are right on your doorstep. The environment is of the best and the ski lifts can carry 2930 persons per hour to the slopes above. The difference in altitude from lowest point to highest is about 500 meters. The Ski Centre was built up during the years 1955-1964 but formal operations began in 1962. The ski lodge stands at a height of 506 meters above sea level and can provide sleeping accommodation in twin rooms for 22 persons, besides having a communal sleeping area which can take 70 persons. The ski hut Strýta lies at an altitude of 700 meters above sea level and has a shop and toilet facilities for the use of visitors to Hlíðarfjall
The new ski lift, which has been given the name Fjarkinn, is the pride of the Hlíðarfjall Ski Centre. It is 1000 meters long and carries 4 persons per seat. Fjarkinn replaced the oldest ski lift in the country and its capacity is many times that of its predecessor; 2000 persons an hour instead of a mere 450. It is now but a 61/2 minute ride to Strýta!! www.hlidarfjall.is

SPEED SKI _ Trace Max Sachs
The World Cup Finals were just completed in Cervinia Italy on Monday April 2nd. This season we had a series of 8 World Cup races. The World Cup Tour took us to Austria, Canada, Sweden, Finland and Italy.

I had a great beginning of the season winning the first two World Cups in Austria and Canada. After a bad crash while free skiing in Verbier, things took a different turn. I overextended the exterior ligament in my left knee, as well as damaging the meniscus. In addition I had a hairline fracture in my upper rib cage. I immediately went to a physical therapist after the accident, with only a week to recover before the next race in Sweden. I really wasn't sure I would be able to race at all.

After flying to Sweden, I gave it my best shot at the race in Hundfjallet. I was skiing quite well, but I think the fatigue got the better of me by the end of the race. I ended up in 5th place. I was just happy to be speed skiing again, and I was satisfied with my finish. I continued in Sweden at the next event in Idre. I started to feel better and was more comfortable on the steep track with no compression. I placed second there.

After a 5 hour drive and another flight to Northern Finland on the Russian border, I arrived to race in Salla for two World Cup events. In the first race, I was winning in all of the training runs and semi finals. I think the fatigue got the better of me again, I lost focus in the final and ended up in 2nd place. In the second race, I was feeling better and I won the semi final as well as the final. This put me in the lead of the overall World Cup title by only 3 points.

After 4 more international flights to get back to the Alps, I had 1 day to prepare for the World Cup Finals in Cervinia Italy. I was quite confident going into the race. I have won there several times before and I am usually very comfortable on that track. I knew in order to win the globe I only had to beat one woman, Anna-Karine Modin of Sweden, who was only 3 points behind me. I proved to be the woman to beat in the finals. I was 3 kph faster than the 2nd place woman Emilie Wolff. I also finished 4th in the men's speeds. It was my sweetest World Cup victory yet. I went from a lead of only 3 points ahead to 18 points ahead of the hot young Swedish racer Anna-Korine Modin. My final points were 165, Anna-Korine had 147 in 2nd, and Sanna Tinstrand had 100 for 3rd place. I'm am extremely happy with my 5th consecutive World Cup Champion Title.

The season isn't over yet! We still have 4 more races, which will hopefully be at very high speeds. We start in Les Arcs France with the Red Rock Cup, one of the longest running races in the history of speed skiing. We continue in Les Arcs with the first of the Speed Masters series. This race has the potential of being a World Record breaking race. After a week in Les Arcs, we head over to Verbier Switzerland which will host the 2007 FIS World Championships. This should be a great race and the first time since the 92 Olympics that FIS will allow us to go over the current 200 kph speed limit for FIS races. As the reigning World Champion from 2005, I hope to ski well and retain my title. The final race will also be in Verbier and it will be the Swiss counterpart to the Speed Masters event. There will be an overall title for the combined Speed Masters Race - (Pro World Champion).

I'm still looking for media coverage and sponsorship to help finish out my season. I don't have a ticket back to the US yet and my funds are quickly diminishing with all of the travel expenses that I have incurred this season. If you are interested in lending a hand, please send me an email. I really appreciate your support. Sincerely,
Tracie Max Sachs The official site of professional speed skier Tracie Max Sachs

USSA News
Ligety Adds GS Title As Championships End
GIRDWOOD, Alaska (April 3) - Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) overcame flight light, which created tricky conditions, to earn the sixth U.S. title of his career Tuesday, capturing the giant slalom which concluded the Nature Valley U.S. Alpine Championships at Alyeska Resort by more than two seconds.
Versus (formerly OLN) will televise coverage from the championships Saturday at 6 p.m. ET.
Junior Will Brandenburg (Spokane, WA), named earlier in the week as the Ski Racing Alpine Junior of the Year, was silver medalist in 2:24.66. Cody Marshall (Pittsfield, VT) had the fastest second run to move up five places as he completed the podium (2:24.78). Brandenburg leads juniors (again)
Brandenburg, who led juniors in both the downhill and super G, again was the top junior with Austin Johnson (Traverse City, MI) sixth overall and second junior with Max Hammer (Jackson Hole, WY) ninth overall and third junior. "It was a fun race," Ligety said. "It was cool to see Will, one of the top juniors in the U.S. right now, come in second and show he really deserves that [Ski Racing] Junior of the Year award." The first run claimed 25 skiers, who didn't finish, and as he inspected, Ligety said, "I knew it was going to be tough," Ligety said. "On inspection, I saw that it was super, super turny. So I knew I was going to stay ahead of it and put a clean run together, which is super hard in those conditions." Eleven skiers didn't finish the final run.
Ligety pleased with first GS crown
Reflecting on his week at the championships, Ligety was philosophical; in addition to his two gold medals, he was silver medalist Sunday in the slalom behind Jimmy Cochran (Keene, NH), who won his third championship at Alyeska. He said the week was "okay. It would have been nice to be able to hold onto my slalom title, but it's no big deal. Jimmy's had a good record on this hill, so it's tough to beat him there.

"It was nice to come up with the GS title - my first GS title. GS is always one of the hardest titles to win normally because we've always had a pretty deep team on the GS side, so I'm pretty psyched to win. It's too bad Bode didn't show up for the second run and give me a run for it."

Brandenburg said he was hoping for a podium to complete his championships. "I came through . to be honest, no I didn't. I was so far out, and 'Fish' and Bode both went out. Luckily for me that happened, but I slid in there behind them, but a lot of it was those other guys going out. I didn't think it was going to hold up.

Head Coach Phil McNichol said the flat light, which smoothes a course and makes it harder to pickup snow changes or breaks in terrain, wreaked havoc on the field. "Ted didn't do anything spectacular, but he skied two strong, clean runs and didn't make a lot of mistakes. Willy Brandenburg had a good race, and obviously so did Cody; both of them went out in slalom yesterday, so maybe there was a little more motivation to do well today, but - whatever it was - they got it done nicely.
Coach heaps praise on Alyeska community
"There was a lot of attrition in the light, though and the course got a little funky. The warmer snow didn't set-up well and that was a problem as bumps developed."
He heaped praise on the Alyeska Resort and community for its support of the championships and the continual course preparation for each of the races. "Up to the last day, it was epic winter weather, great conditions. People enjoyed winter for just about the first real time this season...free skiing and racing. "Alyeska just did such a kickass job. The community here is so passionate and they turned out in force to help keep things in the best shape. Athletes from the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association West Region, won the Tom Garner Regions Cup tally with 3,626 points to 2,077 for the East and 1,130 for the Rocky/Central Region.

Innsbruck & the Stubai Glacier

Innsbruck - The Winter Sports Capital, twice host to the Winter Olympics offers Old World history combined with some of the best ski mountains in the world capital. The city works hard to maintain and improve its twin character as a top-class ski area and sophisticated urban center. Innsbruck, with its striking location at the foot of the Alps, offers winter guests a tempting choice of great skiing and snowboarding in six different areas.

As the ultimate winter Olympic venue, Innsbruck has hosted the world famous event twice based on an excellent variety of terrain and an impeccable infrastructure for skiers and non-skiers. The nearby village of Igls boasts the legendary men's Olympic downhill run, and stunning views of a picturesque Innsbruck below.
Free shuttle bus service links the various ski areas, and the "Super Ski Pass" is the skier's key to 310 miles (500 kilometers) of ski-able terrain and 200 lifts. The pass also covers the Stubai glacier, and even gives holders the option of excursions to St. Anton and Arlberg and Kitzbuhel.
Innsbruck is a living treasure house of history. Once an imperial capital, it embraces 800-year-old traditions adding to the authentic charm and elegance of the place. The city also has world class shopping, fine restaurants, and many sights from the historic "Golden Roof" to the fascinating Alpine Zoo.
For all people longing for the genuine winter sports fun, the Stubai Glacier is the optimum oppurtunity! On more than 50 kilometres of ski runs they may take their chance not only on intensive downhill skiing, carving and boarding, but cross-country skiing can be practised wonderfully on the alpine trail of a length of 4,5 km. 21 installations, among 4 cabin lifts, 6 chair lifts, 9 ski tows and training lifts and 2 magic carpets offer ski fans a trendous winter sports resort, and active athletes from all over the world a maximum skiing pleasure at 1.750 to 3.200 m above the sea level.

The new six person chairlift Fernau links the Fernau to the Gaißkarferner mountain. Snowboard freaks can find ideal conditions at the newly created "Boarder´s paradise" including Quarterpipes, Spins, Table Tops, Pro Jumps and a - 100 metres long - halfpipe . For carving fans there is a special run at Daunferner, regulated by a stoplight, where the feeling for bends can be experienced intensively. Two giant slalom runs and a high-speed run at Eisjochferner complete the offer for winter sports fans.

The adventurous and daring can be close to the "eternal ice" on the climber´s steps of the ice tower at Gamsgarten station, since this is an ideal training area for fans of climbing on ice. Every wednesday an introductory course climbing course takes place.
The Stubai Glacier funiculars pay a big deal of attention to the variety offered to the vacationer: starting at a professional gastronomic service, for example in the restaurant "zur Goldenen Gams" (the golden chamois), including dressing rooms and showers to sport shops with rental and storage options.

Seven Applicant Cities have entered the race to win the right to host the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games: Sochi, Russia; Salzburg, Austria; Jaca, Spain; Almaty, Kazahstan; PyeongChang, South Korea; Sofia, Bulgaria and Borjomi, Georgia.
After Fedor Radmann stepped down from his position as CEO of Salzburg 2014 due to health reasons. Franz Klammer, the 1976 Olympic Downhill Champion and skiing legend, who was already serving as the leading Athlete Ambassador of Salzburg 2014, accepted the new role of Chairman International. After today’s executive meeting which was held in agreement with Heinz Schaden, the mayor of the City of Salzburg and Chairman of the Advisory Board of Salzburg 2014 and the Austrian Olympic Committee (ÖOC), the new role for Klammer will see him representing Salzburg 2014 at the international level.

Sugarloaf
We got an inch of fresh snow at the base of the mountain today and a good 3 inches on the upper elevations, and it's really sticking to the trails nicely. We could see another inch or two tonight, and right now we're looking at 6 inches of snow tomorrow night into Wednesday!

The skiing and riding is fabulous and just keeps getting better with every flake of snow that falls. AND according to weather reports, the snow keeps coming this week with some light snow showers Thursday and Friday, so things should be in excellent shape if you want to spend Easter at the Loaf.

We have lots of activities planned for Sunday, starting with a downhill sunrise service - SuperQuad loads at 5:30 a.m. Traditional Easter Service is at 9 a.m. at Richard Bell Chapel, and another downhill worship will start at 11 a.m. at the bottom of the Double Runner chair. Children will be able to meet the Easter Bunny from 8:30-9:30 a.m. in the King Pine Room that day. There will also be a scavenger hunt for 8-12 year olds, and the Easter Costume Parade starts at 11 a.m.

Also, our annual Season Pass Holder Barbecue is 12-2 p.m. Sunday at the Shipyard Brew Haus. Don't forget to bring your pass!

Reggae Fest is getting closer every day, and time is running out to get your Platinum One-Love, all-venue pass. These babies get you into all things reggae, all weekend long, and they're nearly gone. Jamaican superstar Barrington Levy headlines this year's bash, with support from seven other bands, including the top US based reggae act, John Brown's Body. Get your tickets now at 1-800.THE.LOAF, and see why the original spring reggae bash is the biggest and the best.

Sun Peaks Resort
The final weekend of 2006-2007 winter operations is going to be fun as we get excited to celebrate Tod Mountain Days.

A new addition this year to Tod Mountain Days is the Comedy Festival taking place April 6th to 8th. With two complimentary outdoor shows for families during the day, and two shows scheduled for those of drinking age later in the evening we’ll be sure to have you rolling in the aisles with laughter.

We will also be hosting our two annual events, the Dummy Downhill on Saturday, April 7th and
the Slush Cup
Sunday, April 8th. Everyone is welcome to participate in both of these events. At the Dummy Downhill participants come up with their most creative design, attach it to a set of skis and launch it off our jump. Points are awarded for design, coolness, and destruction upon impact. This year will feature two classes, a Family Class and an Open Class.

On Sunday get ready for the Slush Cup. Participants get dressed up in their funniest costumes, and hurl themselves across the sixty foot pond of ice cold slushy water. Points are awarded for costume, style, silliness, and form as riders try to skim across the pond. It’s a great spectator sport if you’re not quite brave enough to join in!
